I have a friend who was a stay at home mom for 17 years who was able to use her experience in management, organization, scheduling, and teaching to earn credit for a college degree. You have skills too that are JUST as valid as any classroom education.
Heres how to get college credit for your life experience:
Im going to use Columbia College in Missouri as an example of how the process works, but most schools will use similar methods to award credit. Also, each school will put a limit on how much credit for prior learning credit you can get. For some schools, its 15 hours, for others it can be as high as 30.

College Level Examination Program Exams
College Level Examination Program exams are a great way for motivated students with strong study skills to obtain college credits in high school. These tests are similar to AP exams, but they do not offer structured classes ahead of assessment. Instead, students prepare on their own, building their own college-level knowledge of key subjects.
CollegeBoard administers CLEP exams throughout the year at approved test centers and recently began implementing remote proctoring. Exams cost $89 and cover composition and literature, world languages, history and science, business, and science and mathematics.
Test-takers receive a scaled score for each exam, ranging from 20-80 points. According to CollegeBoard, the American Council on Education recommends that universities grant credit for scores of 50 or higher. Individual schools may set their own score thresholds.

Uexcel Exams From Excelsior College
Targeted towards non-traditional students, Excelsior College offers a wide range of accredited online courses, degrees, and exams for credit. Anyone can earn college level credit by passing proficiency exams from the UExcel Excelsior College Examination Program. These computer-based tests are offered at thousands of test centers globally. Fees range from $95 to $445.
How Do Semester Credit Hours Influence Gpa
In the U.S., credits are also used to determine a students Grade Point Average for a semester or academic year. In some cases, GPA scores are required for admission to advanced study programmes in the U.S. .
GPA scores range from 0.0 to 4.0. A score of 4.0 is the equivalent of an A average, while 0.0 represents an F score. Each American Bachelors and Masters programme specifies their own minimum GPA requirement for graduation.

How long are college credits good for? How long do college credits stay valid? These are common questions among people considering a return to school after having spent some time away from the classroom.
While the easy answer is that most college credits for core courses will stay valid for years or even decades some credits may have a more finite shelf-life. Typically, course credits within the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields expire within 10 years after the time they were earned. Due to ever-evolving technological and scientific advances, information learned in the STEM field more than a decade ago may be rendered obsolete and require students to rebuild a foundation grounded in newer practices before moving forward. So, if you took STEM-related courses over 10 years ago, be forewarned that they may not necessarily be able to be applied to your new college or university degree program. Its always a good practice to check with your admissions office to find out whether or not any of these courses may be able to be transferred.
While some courses do have an expiration date, the upside is that, if youve worked in a field related to your desired degree program, you may be able to earn college credits in exchange for your work or life experience in that field. How To Earn Academic Credit On Your Gap Year
Most colleges agree, gap years are a good thing. Harvard actually encourages its students to take a gap year and goes as far as to attribute its 97% graduation rate to the number of students who take a break after high school. One study, Gap year takers: uptake, trends and long term outcomes, found that students who take gap years are more likely to graduate with higher GPAs than students who go straight into college. This was true even for gap year students with lower academic achievement in high school.
But who has the time and money to take a year off from college? My parents would have considered taking a gap year a luxury that I didnt have. Who was going to support me for a year while I was doing all that self-discovery? Would I really want to be a year behind all of my peers? Could I afford to go one more year without a full-time job?
For students who can afford to take a full year off, and are able to get parental buy-in, thats a great option. For students who would love to take time out of the classroom, but cant afford to take a year off, getting academic credit for your gap year is the best way to save time and money. Why Earn College Credits While Still In High School
Of course, it is worth it to earn college credits while still in high school, say students able to use such credits to graduate early. Why not save tuition, get out of college a semester or two early, and get a jump on the job market?
If a student can skip an intro course because of an earned college credit, that will save textbook money, too.
But graduating early because of college credits earned in high school isnt the only motivating reason.
Some students may want to challenge themselves by taking higher level courses as soon as they can. If they earn college credits while in high school, they can skip some or all of freshman year in certain cases, or bypass intro level college courses and get right to the advanced classes they want to take.
Having an AP or IB credit in the bank might also allow a student the flexibility to study abroad for a semester or explore other courses outside of his or her major.
And a personal note: After my daughter had a serious car accident in October of her senior year in college causing her to miss weeks of classes, her AP credits helped her graduate on time with her class.
Earning college credits while in high school can cut costs, let you skip intro courses, or enter college as a sophomore. It also shows the colleges to which you are applying that you a serious student, ready and able to take on the challenge of college.
