All Harvard students are automatically enrolled in the Harvard University Student Health Program and charges are applied to the student account. The Student Health Insurance Plan provides a critical safety net to ensure that all students, regardless of location, have access to quality and affordable healthcare. The student will need to decide by the deadline whether to keep or waive the Student Health Insurance Plan with comparable coverage.

In order to waive the insurance, students must provide proof that they are participating in a Health Benefit Plan with comparable coverage pursuant to 956 CMR 8.05. A comparable health insurance plan is one that provides reasonable and comprehensive coverage of health services that include: preventive and primary care, emergency services, hospitalization benefits, ambulatory patient services and mental health services. Any health plan must provide reasonably accessible health services to the student in the area where the student attends school. The Big College Expense You Probably Didn’t Know About And Save For: Mandatory Health Insurance

Tweet This

Watch out: If your health insurance does not meet the requirements set by the college your child… attends, you may be forced to buy an entirely new policy sold or sponsored by the college. This potential cost is often omitted from listed expenses of attendance. Here’s how you can get a waiver.

Even if you have solid family health insurance, it may not meet the requirements of the college your child attends. You may be forced to buy a separate health insurance policy that the college sells or sponsors. At some colleges, the cost of the policy is over $5,000 for the 20192020 academic year .

The way to avoid this charge is to get a waiver from your college by proving you have a health-insurance plan thats comparable to the one it sells. The process to do this for the academic year often occurs in July and August or the month before the tuition bills come out.

There is a good reason for colleges’ mandatory health insurance and its stringent requirements. Colleges are understandably concerned that students could face debt from medical expenses that dwarfs even their student-loan debt. And while the cost of mandatory student health insurance is often a big surprise for many families, in some situations the college’s insurance policy can actually present both savings and a better plan. However, colleges need to improve their grade in making students and parents aware of this large mandatory additional expense.

Making An Informed Decision

Please consider your coverage options carefully. While your current plan may provide adequate benefits close to home, HMO and PPO restrictions may limit coverage for students out of state or your local area. Additionally, your plan may have a high deductible which may present a financial barrier to receiving care or result in high unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

Uc Ship May Be Your Best Bet

In most cases, UC SHIP is a better deal than public options, such as Covered California and Medi-Cal. It may even be a better deal than coverage under your parents health care plan. UC SHIP coverage meets the requirements of the Affordable Care Act including the individual mandate. UC SHIP coverage is equivalent to a Covered California Platinum plan, but is offered at the price of a Bronze plan.

Additionally, the preferred provider organization plans offered through the ACA insurance marketplace like Medi-Cal and Covered California typically provide a lower level of benefits than youll receive through UC SHIP. Youll pay higher deductibles and coinsurance, and have fewer doctors to choose from.

Q: If I am already covered by my family’s health insurance, is there a reason that I should also consider taking the College’s insurance as well?

A: This is a matter of convenience and privacy. When you are sick, the last thing you want to do is think about saving receipts, processing claims, sending information home to your parents, etc. If you purchase the College’s Health Insurance Plan, fees for the College doctor’s visits, dispensed medications, in-house lab tests, and psychiatric consults done through Student Health Services will be processed for you. If you do not purchase the College’s Health Insurance Plan, these charges will appear as a “Health Service Fee” on your College bill. You will need to submit receipts for claims to your parent’s insurance company to seek reimbursement.

Q: Why can’t you process my private insurance?

A: With over 1900 students from many states and countries, the task of processing all those different claims would be formidable.

Q: What is not covered by the Student Health Insurance?

A: The plan does not cover some immunizations, routine physical exams, or most screening tests. There is a $10 co-pay for MD visits at Student Health Services and a $5-40 co-pay for most prescription medications as well as a $250 co-pay for use of the emergency room .

Q: If I decline the student health insurance, can I still use the College’s Student Health Services?

Q: Will I have the opportunity to decline the insurance now and accept it later?

A. Yes.
