How Will A Scholarship Or Grant Affect My Financial Aid

When applying for scholarships and grants, you may also want to look into whether an outside scholarship can impact your schools financial aid package. Heres why:

In determining how much need-based aid you qualify for, your college will first calculate your Expected Family Contribution an index number based on your FAFSA information regarding your familys financial status. The college will then subtract the EFC from the estimated costs of tuition and other expenses to ultimately determine your financial aid package.

You must inform your school if you win an outside grant or scholarship. This is because the additional funding can be viewed as an asset and can increase your EFC.

For example, if the school calculated your EFC as $10,000 and you received another $5,000 in outside grants or scholarships, your school will now consider you having $5,000 extra, that is, having a net EFC of $15,000. Your school might choose to award less financial aid in that case, which makes sense since schools have limited funds.

The good news is, when financial aid offices adjust your financial aid award to account for an outside scholarship, they will usually first decrease the less desirable forms of aid. This means they will cut back on student loans or expected work-study, leaving the financial aid package from your college intact. If youre not sure about your colleges award policy, contact the financial aid office.

College grants and scholarships are standard terms that refer to a one-time award of money for your higher education. Unlike student loans, both do not need to be repaid unless the recipient has a change in enrollment status or early withdrawal from the program.

Often used interchangeably, grants tend to focus on a familys financial status. Meanwhile, scholarships are usually merit-based. They are given to students with academic achievement, athletic ability, or extra-curricular involvement. Another basis can also be traits like ethnicity and minority groups.

Grants In High Need Fields Offset Shortages

Nursing and teaching professions are experiencing shortages in some parts of the United States. When fundamental employment roles are not being filled fast enough to keep pace with societal demands, grants are used to lure qualified candidates into high-need vocations.

Government grants, as well as funds from private sources aim to boost enrollment in these professional fields. As a result, education and health care majors currently enjoy privileged access to targeted subject-specific grants.

What Are The Different Types Of Government College Grants

Scholarship and Financial Aid Process | Hope College Admissions

There are three main forms of government college grants, the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant , and work-study programs. While there are many different types of financial aid available to pay for college, government college grants are considered an excellent choice because they do not have to be repaid. Qualifications differ for each type of federal grant, but are based, at least somewhat, on one’s ability to pay.

The Federal Pell Grant is probably the most widely known government college grant. To qualify for this grant, the applicant must prove financial need. Need is not based strictly on income, it includes the number of people currently living in the household, the number of people in the home currently attending college, and family assets other than income.

Students with the greatest need will qualify for the FSEOG. Students receive this grant when they have a very low expected family contribution for their education. This form of college grant is a supplement to other forms of financial aid.

Will You Be Qualified For An Online College Grant

A common misconception about online college grants is that most applicants have little to no chance of being awarded any. This situation yields interested students in weak spirits who decide to forgo their applications. In reality, a large number of federal grants are left unclaimed, amounting to $3 billion in total.

As every grant differs in eligibility requirements, it is safe to say that not all grants are need-based. With other schools and private organizations focusing on advanced education and specific criteria such as ethnicity or unique skill, theres a grant that fits your needs if you know how and where to look. Some students go beyond the 15-credit semester and want only a part-time grant.

You can search for grants that are explicitly for part-time basis students, such as The Government Finance Professional Development Scholarship. While the amount may not be much less or equivalent to grants of full-time students, this scheduling flexibility can help such students in their other non-educational commitments.

How To Find The Right Sources

Few college-bound students have the financial resources to pay for their post-secondary education entirely out of pocket. Even students with substantial college savings plans typically find that they are left with sizable amounts of unmet need. The average total cost of attending a public four-year college is more than $20,000 per academic year. Students planning to attend a private college or university can expect to spend more than $30,000 per academic year. A college education is a costly proposition, and all indications are that those costs are only going to increase.

With the cost of a college education continuing to rise, most students will need to consider various types of financial assistance. It is not unusual for a students college fund to be comprised of some combination of personal savings, family contributions, scholarships, grants and student loans.

When preparing a college fund, no financial resource should be ignored. Education grants are one of the most popular, and most valuable, sources of financial assistance for college students. With the right grants, students can make their dreams of a higher education a reality.

Applying For College Grants

To ensure you get all the financial aid youre entitled to, follow these three steps:

  • Submit the FAFSA. The FAFSA is what the federal government, states and schools use to determine your eligibility for various forms of financial aid, including grants. Its a good idea to submit the FAFSA as early as possible, as some grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and funds may be limited.
  • Complete the CSS Profile. The CSS Profile is used by hundreds of schools to decide if youre eligible for financial aid from sources other than the federal government. While there is a fee to submit the CSS Profile, there are fee waivers available for low-income students.
  • Apply ahead of deadline. Some grants have detailed application processes and strict deadlines. Make sure you submit your information ahead of the organizations deadline so that youre properly considered.
  • If you need additional financial aid to cover your education costs and have exhausted grant and scholarship awards, federal student loans can be a useful tool. They tend to have lower interest rates than private student loans, and have benefits that can make repaying your loans more manageable after graduation.
