Pick Your Classes Early

Sign up for a Pop

Before registering, open up your schools general education/core curriculum and course catalog and read it thoroughly. This is a great opportunity to explore majors or classes that interest you. If you have already declared a major, be sure to look closely at its course and credit requirements to make sure the classes you want to take will help you stay on track to graduate. Consider these things a week or two before registering – it can save you some panic on the day you actually register.

Here are some other important considerations when picking classes:

  • Do I really need to take this class? Will taking this class advance you in getting your degree? Is it required in order to graduate in your major? Will it give you enough credits?
  • Does this class make sense with my schedule? While academics are the most important thing about attending college, you may likely have other obligations outside of school, like work, hobbies, clubs, and friends. Will taking this class interrupt your ability to do other things? Think about this particularly when considering taking a class that you dont need to graduate.
  • What electives can I take? You can learn AND have fun in college! If your schedule allows it, try taking a fun, low-credit course. Some colleges offer electives like ballet, improv acting, or painting to help students explore their interests outside of their majors.

Peralta Colleges Foundation Scholarships

Registering For Classes at Montgomery College

Community colleges have long provided a gateway to higher education, but that gateway has become more difficult to access. Costs to attend community college has doubled since 2006. A student who enrolled full-time in a community college will pay an estimated $1,500 per semester for fees, books, and supplies that go beyond tuition. The students who attend the Peralta Colleges tend to be low-income, with approximately 70 percent qualifying for financial assistance, but this assistance falls short of making a college education affordable for many. Gifts from alumni, employees, committed citizens, corporations and foundations help many students lacking financial resources achieve their educational and career goals.

We have 100+ scholarship funds created by friends, family, and faculty of Peralta Colleges, as well as community partners who are passionate about building the next generation of workforce leaders.

How To Find Grants For Online College

While searching online, it helps to enter keywords like Adult Skills,Non-Traditional, or Continuing Education when youre searching. Other scholarships will require a bit more reading of the description, to identify them as non-traditional. For instance, many memorial grants are named after a person, but do not include other specifics in their title. You can also tailor your search based on personal characteristics. Here are some examples to filter your search by:

  • Ethnicity-based grants: If you have the slightest bit of this ancestry in your family tree, its worth checking for grants and scholarships .
  • Grants for online college for single mothers: Raising children as a single parent presents a tremendous challenge for many, and as such, many grants are available to help alleviate the burden .
  • Grants for gender: In an effort to help recruit women into male-dominated fields such as STEM, many scholarships and grants are available for women. The Association for Women in Mathematics provides a list of scholarship and grant sources, as well as annual travel grants for members and student members.

Be Sure You Can Handle It

College courses are very different from high school courses. In most cases, the work is more abstract, there is more of it, and the pace is faster. You will need to show initiative and self-discipline. And, unless you take your class in the summer, you will need to work around your high school scheduleand keep up your grades.

    Set An Alarm To Register

Registering for classes and/or getting the class time you want for the perfect class schedule can be pretty competitive at some schools. Look for a registration period alert in your student account/email to know when your registration time is and set an alarm for 10-15 minutes before this time. You will want to be at your computer with a good internet connection with enough time to restart your computer, troubleshoot, or address any student account issues.
