How Do I Stop Recruiters From Contacting Me

There is a particular recruiting company that continues to contact me. I have been unhappy with their performance in the past and have been clear that I am no longer interested in their services. I have had to inform them of this multiple times.

Whenever they contact me, I inform them that I do not want them to contact me further. They oblige for a few months, and then I get an e-mail or phone call from a different recruiter with the same company. Most recently, I expressed my frustration and insisted that I be completely removed from their database. Today, I received another e-mail from them after months of silence.

Is there any sort of legal grounds I can quote or anything else I can say or do to force them to actually remove me from their list of contacts and stop contacting me?

Unfortunately you’ve already violated the cardinal rule about dealing with recruiting companies:

  • Never, under any circumstances, give a recruiter that you do not personally know and trust your phone number.
  • When Can You Sue For Harassment

The laws about civil suits vary by state. You will need to check out those laws or get the guidance of a lawyer to see if you have a suit.

Civil rights laws bar most activities focused on a person because of specific characteristics they have. This can be gender, race, religion, age, and more. If you experience workplace harassment, especially sexual harassment, anti-discrimination laws may cover it.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 covers employees in the workplace. It only protects victims from companies, not individuals. You would have to claim that the company permitted harassment at work.

Remember, the harasser may face charges in criminal court. But that will happen separately than a civil suit can.

What To Say When Emailing A College Coach

Youve laid down the groundwork, now its time to write the email! When emailing college coaches, the goal is to respectfully introduce yourself, your skills and interest in being recruited. So, as you think about how to write an email to a college coach, visualize an inverted pyramid.

The top section of the email is where you need to grab the coachs attention. This is a great time to show coaches that youve done research on their program in about 2-3 sentences. Use a recent stat about the team that interested you, or explain why youd like to play for them.

I recently read an article on Twitter that your team won the highest GPA for all sports. Congrats! Im happy to see your players share the same dedication as I do to both athletics and academics.

The middle section of the email is perhaps the most important when it comes to emailing college coaches. This is where you give a little more information about yourself, including athletic and academic standouts, to tell coaches why you would be a good fit for their program. Include the following information in the middle section of your coach email:

    • Your general information: Name, graduation year, location, high school and club name
    • Academics: GPA, test scores, if they would be important information for the coach youre emailing.
    • Athletics: Sport specific stats and relevant measurables.
    • Contact information: your phone number and email, as well as the contact information for your high school, or club coaches

The Best Time To Email College Coaches

Athletes and parents often ask, what is the best time to email college coaches? Unfortunately, there isnt one answer that will fit every coachs preference. So, when it comes to emailing coaches, athletes need to think like a coach. Keep these three things in mind before hitting send.

    • Is it season? Coaches are extremely busy in season with practices and games, but that doesnt mean you cant email college coaches during this time. Be mindful of their game schedule
    • What time is practice? Ask coaches what time they practice during the week so you have a better idea of when they will be available to read your email.
    • How late is too late? When it comes to communicating with college coaches, a good rule of thumb is to avoid sending any communications between 11p.m. and 6a.m in their time zone.

Insider tip: Try sending your email between 4-8 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday. Our data show that this is the best time to send an email to college coaches.

B.J. Dunne, head basketball coach at Gettysburg College, and his coaching staff aim to answer athlete emails in the morning or before their 4 p.m. practice. Hear more on the best time to email coaches below.

    Tell Them To Stop Calling

These days, a phone call is usually limited to family, friends and business. So when you get a random number calling you from a place youve never even been to, it can be pretty annoying. Not only that, but theres no voicemail and they just keep calling. When that happens, its like receiving all that junk mailonly in the form of a phone call. So, how do you stop these junk mail phone calls?

You can add your name and number to the National Do Not Call Registry. While it may not be foolproof, it can limit the amount of telemarketing calls you do get. All you have to do is sign up at or call 1-888-382-1222 with the line you want to remove from the call list.

Every year following the PSAT exam, emails opening as such flood students inboxes shortly after the College Board disseminates their contact information to admission offices . Many consider these emails flattering, after all, one would be guaranteed acceptance to a college that contacts them on a weekly basis, right?

A look at the true interests of college admission officers would indicate the opposite being true. In reality, colleges send out mass emails to high school sophomores and juniors due to a couple of reasons: they are making an effort to lower their acceptance rate, and/or profit off the money they receive from applications. These intents prove college recruitment efforts to be problematic and misleading, making it crucial that students understand the true basis of their outreach.

Colleges contact students in an effort to heighten their prestige. In order to make that happen, they look to low acceptance rates. To achieve this, colleges send out thousands of emails flattering students, which in turn obligates them to apply. This ends in a majority of them going on to be rejected, which is reflected in the colleges acceptance rate.

  • Upload the athletes highlight video to their NCSA Recruiting Profile and YouTube to increase exposure.
  • If this is the first time the athlete is reaching out to a coach, draft an introductory email with the recruits basic information, a description of why they are interested in the program and a link to their Recruiting Profile and highlight video.
  • If the recruit has already been in contact with the coaching staff, include a link to new highlight videos in an email about the athletes latest athletic achievements and a schedule of upcoming tournaments, showcases, etc.
  • The right person to send your video to will vary depending on the program and division level. Research the program to see if they have position-specific coaches or a recruiting coordinator and include them in the email, as well as the head coach. But What About The Real Spammers

RELATED:Who is Making All This Malware — and Why?

Bear in mind that this only applies to emails from legitimate organizations. For example, this includes newsletters from website you subscribe to , promotional emails from Groupon, or any other organization thats received your email and your permission to market to you.

The CAN-SPAM Act helped clean up commercial emails sent by legitimate companies. But the real spammers are outside the reach of these laws. Sure, you could report a serious scammer to the FCC for not including the required unsubscribe mechanism, but theyre probably sending emails from outside the US and countries with similar laws. It would also be hard to find these people, because the spam emails are probably coming from a botnet of compromised computers instead of a legitimate email server.

Luckily, modern email services like Gmail and have made great strides against this type of nasty spam, and it shouldnt reach your inbox very often. If it does, just click the Spam button. But that Spam button should just be used for real spam unsubscribe from the legitimate commercial emails you receive with their included Unsubscribe links. Just marking an email as spam wont actually unsubscribe you from the mailing list.
