A College Degree Is Beneficial But Not Always Required

You dont necessarily need to go to college to earn big. There are plenty of high-income earners who did not go to college, and many high-paying industries that welcome non-college graduates.

Start-ups in technology, for example, may be more interested in your skillset and potential than a degree. You can also start your own business in something you excel at, such as consulting, marketing, design, or freelance programming all of which can pay well without a degree.

You also dont need to go to college to become an expert in an area. Personal and professional experience, coupled with online resources can give you expertise in your field that a college degree cannot. In college, you dont learn tenacity like you do from the fails and successes of real-life experiences.

In addition, your degree could be useless by the time you graduate. Take computer science, for example. The introductory programming course taken in freshman year of college will likely be irrelevant for a job four to five years later. Industries such as technology and science are always changing a better way to learn and become successful in your field is to keep yourself updated on industry news.

What Factors Determine Whether Or Not College Credits Will Transfer

If you want to try to guess whether your credits will transfer before you apply to a program, there are some general insights that may help. There is no definitive â5-year ruleâ or â10-year ruleâ regarding transfer credits, though there are three common areas of consideration: relevance, recency, and accreditation.

Financial Aid To Make Your Degree Cheaper

Of course, on top of transferring credits, you want to look into financial aid to keep the cost of your degree down. This is an area where you need to be careful. Youve probably heard lots about the student debt crisis on the news and it is absolutely real. If youre careful about not borrowing too much to pay for a degree however, you can come out of college with a good result.

Its worth doing everything you can to control the cost of your degree program. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, average total costs of attending a state university for a year was over $17,000. Private colleges averaged a whopping $44,551 per year, while for-profit schools cost an average of $25,431. each year .

The first thing you want to do to get financial aid for your bachelor degree are to ask your school if they offer any scholarships. Many, many online colleges provide some kind of scholarship that can cut anywhere from a few hundred to many thousands of dollars of the price of a degree. Some of these scholarship programs are based on you demonstrating financial need, but others are based on different factors. Some, quite honestly, are based on factors that are a bit vague. Its always worth asking about school scholarships because many schools use them to attract students, and you never know what youll turn up.

Do You Need To Pay To Get Your Transcript

Estimated Cost of Attendance: Cost of IU: Paying for College: Student ...

It depends. Sometimes schools will charge you a small fee to cover the cost of creating and distributing your transcript. The amount charged and how it is charged varies by school. Some schools don’t charge fees at all for transcript requests.

Some schools charge a one-time fee, usually paid when you start your freshman year at the high school. This fee is included with other school fees , and paying it once allows you to request unlimited transcripts and send unlimited transcripts to schools or other places forever, without paying.

Some schools provide unofficial copies of your transcript for free, but charge a fee for sending an official version of your transcript. At my high school, you could get an unofficial copy of your transcript for free as well as three official copies, but if you needed more than three official copies sent, then you had to pay $2 each time to cover the cost of shipping.

If you use a third party site to get your transcript, be aware that they charge shipping and handling fees for both official and unofficial copies of your transcript. These fees vary by company but are typically more than your school charges, so it’s best to try and get your transcript through your school first.

Its important to note that failing a class will result in not receiving any college credit. A failed class will usually require re-taking the course, if required, in order to receive the credits associated with the course. If you do not drop the course, the failing letter grade will significantly influence your weighted GPA. The more credit hours a course is, the more it will negatively impact your GPA.

To ensure you wont have to wait too long for this document to be completed 100%, once you pass an exam, you can ask your professor to write in your Transcript of Records rough copy your exam result in the Local Grade part, while the other parts should be filled by you with all the information needed.

When your Transcript of Records is completed, all you have to do is deliver the document to your home International Office together with the rest of the required application paperwork.

If You Are Currently Enrolled At The School:

If you currently attend the high school you’d like a transcript from, then you’re in luck because that makes it pretty simple to get your transcript. First, stop by your guidance counselor’s office and ask him or her how you can request a copy of your high school transcript. Your counselor will advise you on next steps which could include:

Picking up a copy in person from your school’s office

If this is the case, stop by the office and tell them you’d like a copy of your transcript. You may need to bring an ID or know your student identification number in order to get your transcript. In general, unofficial versions of your transcript can be printed off very quickly, sometimes right then, but receiving or sending official versions may take a few days longer.

Requesting a copy online

If your school has this, there will often be a page on their website where you can request a transcript. It may allow you to print off an unofficial copy for yourself and/or request for an official copy to be sent on your behalf.

Using a third party site

Most high schools will give you a copy of your transcript directly if you are a current student, but there are some that outsource to a third party. Two common examples are Parchment and Need My Transcript. Both these sites are simple to use and can send copies of your transcript to colleges and employers for a fee.

For example, a person who is aiming for a job with a focus on information technology might describe a programming project which involved the creation of a complex Excel database. If you received any recognition for the project, or an outstanding grade, you could also mention those.

How Can You Verify That Someone Claiming To Have Graduated From A Certain College Actually Did

All colleges and universities keep records of its graduates. Theinformation is archived and easily accessible. Therefore it is notwise to claim you have graduated from Harvard, Princeton, or evenBobs University if you didnt because if an employer, for example, wants to verify it, all he/she needs to do is contact a staffmember in charge of records at that institution.

At one point the above has been true, but due to enacted privacylaws, it would be against the law for a college to confirm or denyany persons graduation status to an employer. It is now theresponsibility of the employer to request official or unofficialtranscripts from the prospective employee in order to confirm theirdegree claims.

How To Calculate Credits Earned For High School

Unlike high school, college can be completed at your own pace. Under the high school system, it is easy to tell what year you are in. While colleges do still note freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior designations. A student labelled as a freshman may have attended the school for several years. College students can complete a bachelors degree in four years if they follow the example set by their high school, but that isn’t required or always possible. Many degree programs can run into a five-year or more bachelor’s degree due to the programming required or personal issues that make it difficult to complete the program in four years. Many high school students also come into college with one or more semesters of college credits. Students can also take courses over the summer to finish their degree sooner. These factors can make it difficult to determine what year or semester you have completed.

What Is A Transcript Of Records

The Transcript of Records is a document you will need to present, as part of the application process at your future host university from abroad. If you will be part of an exchange programme, you will also need another official transcript of records at the end of your study period, completed by the university where you attended courses.

The Transcript of Records consists basically of a list of the course units taken, the exams you have passed and the credits gained.

In the Transcript of Records, you can usually see:

  • the course unit code
  • the title of the courses you have attended at your host university
  • the duration of the course
  • the local grade
  • the ECTS credits you have gained by passing the exam

In case your home university does not use the ECTS system, the transcript of records should include an explanation of the credit and grading systems used. If youre submitting the ToR online, you can describe the grading scale used at the institution at the time of study. The description should clarify which are the highest and lowest grades.

Depending on the rules set by each university, your academic records can be filled by yourself or the home and/or host university, usually the International Office. Normally, the ToR is being filled once you have passed all your exams included in the Learning Agreement, and, usually, the failed courses wont be listed, just the ones you passed.
