How To Be Successful In College By Going To Class

To become a successful college student, you need always to go to the class. It can be tempting to skip lessons, especially at large classes that your absence wouldnt always be noticed and attendance wouldnt always be taken. Do not do it if you want to be successful. You lose valuable information. You also go to college to study: what good is it if you dont learn after all? If you are in a smaller class, your instructor will notice your absence, even if he doesnt count them against you. If it turns out that you are not involved in the course, your instructor may not want to help you. If you need motivation, you should calculate how much lesson costs. Suppose you are in Harvard, where tuition is $ 45,278 a year. If you take 5 classes per semester , that equates to $ 4,527.80 per class. For a standard 16-week semester, this equates to $ 282.98 per week, $ 94.32 per lesson for a weekly course three times. Is that thing keeping away from class really worth nearly a hundred dollars? I do not believe it. Going to class will help you become academically successful in college.

Building self-awareness is one of the best ways to stay motivated in college. You need to be able to evaluate how well you’re doing each day. So set daily goals. Then, before going to bed each night, take a moment to write something simple like “All Done” if you’ve completed all of your tasks for the day. If you didn’t, then quickly jot down why you weren’t able to. This way, you build a system for being mindful of your actions and holding yourself accountable.

One of the best tips for college students is to remember that youre not alone on your journey to earning a college degree. Asking for help from your instructors, advisors and peers is a key to success, said advisor Heather Brydon.

This is a place where a lot of students are missing out and is key to unlocking more learning than just the class, she said. youre going to get a lot more value added by interacting with your instructor someone who has real-world experience in the subject. They are your gateway to learning more.

Tips For Online Learning

Although online students can succeed in college by following the same tips as students studying on campus for instance, starting well, staying focused on the end goal, remaining engaged they may feel their college experience is challenging in different ways. For starters, online students typically have more to balance as they learn to manage their time and resources.

A lot of online students are juggling a fuller array of life realities, says Dr. Cellon. Frequently, theyre working full time while attending classes. They may be parents as well. Having more going on that theyre managing in their lives certainly affects how they learn.

Learning to manage time well, developing good study habits, and staying focused are especially important for these students. Setting aside a specific time of day for studying, for example, and having a designated space in their home for learning can help.

Another important college success tip for online students is to make the most of their life experiences, applying them to their classroom learning. TROY looks for ways to leverage online students current professional and personal experiences with their educational and professional goals if theyre making a career transition, TROY helps them connect to opportunities within the industry theyre aiming to enter.

College Isn’t The Time To Find Yourself

There used to be a saying that went “go to college to find yourself.” That’s bullshit. College is way too expensive to waste time finding yourself.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Steve Jobs, when he gave his famous commencement speech at Stanford:

I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldnt see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didnt interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

If you don’t know what you want to do with your life, don’t go to college yet. You can always start college at any time you choose! .

Why not work for a year, or travel, or be an intern. Just get some life experiences, try some things out, know what you like, what you hate, what you’re passionate about.

On the flip side, to be successful in college, you have to have self direction. You have to know what you want, why you’re doing it, and what you’re going to get out of it.

Take A Break When You Need It

Sometimes youll need to take a step back from your work and decompress. When you return, youll likely feel re-energized and ready to tackle your assignment with a clear mind.

  • Try to plan a day each week that you have free from work and school, so you have time to unwind and enjoy the journey,” Christa Romo, an online human services student, said.
