FAFSA Tip #4: How to List More Than 10 Colleges on the FAFSA Form

There are different college admission application forms, and each college determines what form it requires. Most applications are electronic and submitted online, but some may allow or require;paper submissions.

Know what application forms you will use:

  • Common Application:; More than 300 colleges across the country participate in the Common Application, an online application system in which the student’s information is entered once and can be sent to multiple colleges. A college using this system may also require completion of a supplemental form specific to that college.
  • SUNY:;Applications for the State University of New York allow for applying to more than one college within;the system.
  • CUNY:; Applications for the City University of New York allow for applying to more than one college within;the system.
  • College’s own application:; Some colleges have their own application forms.; These may be available on their websites or through links emailed to prospective students.

How Many Is Too Many

Most admissions officers generally advise students to apply to about five to seven colleges, but no more than 10. That includes a couple of safety schools , a couple of match schools , and a couple of reach schools .

In a Huffington Post article, Maura Kastberg, Executive Director of Student Services of RSC Your College Prep Expert, concurs with that advice. There may be 20 colleges you want to attend, or you could have your heart set on just one. When you are applying to college, be practical. Most students should apply to somewhere between five to seven colleges. There are no guarantees that you will be accepted to the school you desire, but you should have a good idea about your chances of admission to each school.

Dont Submit The Same Application

When its time to reapply to college, make sure to approach it differently. Do more research into what the school is looking for and plan accordingly. If theyre looking for a higher SAT score, for example, retake the test. Your essay should also be rewritten. Try to show the growth and education youve undertaken in the past year. Another option is asking different teachers for recommendation letters.

Your previous application was denied for a reason, so its important to take a different course for the next one.

13 Things You Can Use More Than Once/ IKEA hack

As you approach the end of your junior year of high school, you should finalize a list of schools you want to apply to. How many schools you’ll want to apply to depends on your circumstances.

It’s always good to have a backup school, but if you’re confident that you have the right grades and test scores for your preferred choice, you may only need to apply to one college. Conversely, if you’re only applying to very academically competitive schools, you may want to submit 8-10 applications. For most students, four or five schools is about the right number. Your list will grow and change over time, but it’s good to have a strong starter list by February of your junior year.

When preparing to apply to these colleges in the fall of your senior year, make sure you have all of the necessary application materials. Every school requires a copy of your high school transcripts, which you can request through your high school records office. Below are a few other items to take care of as you apply.

Many colleges require a college entrance examination, although some schools have recently dropped this requirement. The two most common college tests are the ACT and the SAT, which seek to measure what you’ve learned in high school. While similar, they do have some important distinctions. Nearly every college that wants test scores will let you submit results from the ACT or the SAT, so it’s up to you to decide â you may also take both.

    What Makes A Good College

When evaluating schools, there are a number of factors to consider. The size, location, and culture of the campus are all important. Knowing what you want to study also helps, particularly if you are very passionate about a particular subject. Most larger schools offer a wide variety of majors, but some smaller colleges will have slimmer pickings, so keep that in mind.

Affordability will be important for many students. You shouldn’t entirely dismiss pricier schools right away, particularly if you have a strong academic background and could earn a large scholarship. Still, if cost is of primary concern, you’ll probably want to limit your search to public schools within your state and states with reciprocity agreements.

How To Set Up A Common App Account

Setting up your Common App account is a fast and easy process. First, go to the Common Application’s website. In the upper right corner is a button labelled “Create an Account.” Click it! You’ll select if you’re a student, parent, or education professional.

Then you’ll set up your account. You’ll enter basic information such as your email and password, as well as your name, phone number, date of birth, and address. Finally, you’ll decide whether you want the Common App to share your contact information with colleges so they can send you school brochures and if you want the Common App to send you emails and texts not directly related to your application. Both of these are completely optional and won’t impact your application.

What does the Common App look like? After your account is created, and every new time you log in, you’ll be brought to your dashboard, which looks like this:

Ask The Experts: Early Decision And Early Application

    If I apply to a school Early Action, not Early Decision, this isnt binding, right? So, if this is true, why are the acceptance rates higher for EA? Theres no higher probability that you will attend that school, so why would they be more likely to accept you? Also, would it look bad to apply to one school EA and another ED at the same time? That way you would have a higher chance of getting into your ED school and if you didnt, you would also have a higher chance of getting into you EA school.;

Also, how many schools can you apply to for EA? However many you want, or just a few schools?; Sorry about all the questions, but I was a bit confused about the matter, so if you could tell me anything that I should know about Early Action, I would really appreciate it. Stephanie

Yes, Early Action is non-binding, meaning that you typically can apply to other colleges even if you are admitted EA. However, there are single-choice or restrictive EA programs that prohibit you from applying to any EA or ED college if you apply EA to them.

Your question is a good one: Why would EA schools give you any advantage if you still have the ability not to choose them? Colleges do find that EA applicants are more serious about their school and more likely to enroll if admitted EA. In other words, there is a higher yield for EA admits, which helps schools as they create their incoming class.

Can you shed some light on the help that early decision provides? Thank you! Stephen

What If You Miss The Application Deadline

What happens to applications when SAT scores arrive late varies depending on each college’s policy.

Some schools have a hard and fast rule: late application materials disqualify that applicant. For example, the University of Texas’s policy even overrides the guaranteed admission the school offers to any in-state students in the top 10% of their class.

In short, late test scores are a big gamble you’re essentially betting that your application won’t be considered until further into the process and that therefore your SAT scores still have a chance to get there without issue.

For example, here’s what Stanford University’s admissions site warns in regard to test scores:

“We cannot delay the review of an application in anticipation of scores that will arrive after the deadline nor can we guarantee that late scores will be reviewed.”

Meanwhile, UVA points out the following if your SAT scores are late:

“There is a chance that we will have already started the review your file before those scores arrive. You should still send those scores. … There’s a chance that the scores will be seen at some point in the process.”

Finally, some schools judge applications on a case-by-case basis. This means that an otherwise excellent application might be put aside until SAT scores arrive, while an application that is clearly not a good fit for the school will be rejected even before scores are received.

    Guide To Transferring Colleges

Plenty of students transfer between colleges every year. In fact, about one-third of all students will swap institutions at least once before earning their degree.

Transferring colleges can be a great idea if you’re sure that the new school offers opportunities your current school lacks. That said, transferring involves an application process, and competition for open spots can be fierce. Your odds of acceptance as a transfer student are very different from your odds of admission as a first year. Heres our advice on how to decide if transferring schools is right for you and tips for navigating the process once youve decided to make a change.

    Plan Your College Transfer

Transferring to another college is not like applying to college the first time. Your high school transcript and test scores will take a back seat to your college transcript. So earn strong grades in college if you hope to transfer .

Colleges have different policies for transfer students but typically expect you to have acquired a minimum number of credits. You’ll have a harder time transferring if you’ve completed more than two years of study, even if you abandon some of the credit you’ve accrued.

Of course, transferring can impact your intended graduation date or study abroad plans. Be aware of the policies at your prospective transfer school. Not all classes/credits are transferable and some schools won’t accept credit from a class if you earned below a C.
