Q What Scholarships Are Available

Scholarships come in many forms. Most scholarships are merit-based or need-based. Merit-based scholarships evaluate applicants on their academic record and potential. Need-based scholarships require proof of financial need. Both scholarship types often set a minimum GPA for consideration.

Some scholarships offer one-year awards. Others provide multiple years of funding. Some scholarships let recipients reapply.

Scholarships also cover different expenses. While some only cover tuition, others pay for any education-related expense, including housing.

Scholarships Grants And Bursaries For Canadian Students

Will Winning A Scholarship Impact My Financial Aid Package

It may. The government takes student awards into consideration when offering aid. However, students should not be deterred by this. The effects are not likely to be great. Many schools use student money to offset loan eligibility, not grant awards. Students who receive little aid can benefit greatly from scholarships.

How Will I Receive My Scholarship Or Grant Money

Lets say you win a scholarship . Can you expect someone to come knocking at your door with a giant check or sack of cash? Well, unfortunately not. Its much less theatrical than that, but it should be a seamless transaction.

Usually, the money from government or private scholarships and grants will go straight to your college account, where it will be applied to any tuition, fees, or other outstanding balances. It may also be sent by check or direct deposit into your bank account. If you dont know how you will receive your grant or scholarship money, ask the organization that is providing it.

Depending on the type of aid you receive, the money may be sent as a complete amount or multiple disbursements that add up to the total scholarship amount.

Search Scholarships By Grade Level

Most college scholarships target incoming freshmen and undergraduates, so the sooner you start searching for awards and applying for them, the better. If you are a high school student, adding scholarship applications to your list of things to do alongside college applications and standardized tests is extremely important. Undergraduates that have received generous scholarships to pay for their freshman year should continue their hard work and good academic standing throughout college, because many scholarships must be renewed and are open to upper classmen as well. While scholarships for graduate students are less common, they are often very generous, as many target particular fields of study, or are awarded by potential employers who want better-educated employees. Conduct a college scholarships search or browse through our site to see the scholarships by grade level that you may qualify for, because no matter your year, you could be missing out on dozens of opportunities to fund your education.

Check The Status Of Your Scholarships And Be Patient

Most scholarships will let you know when you can expect to hear back by. You can also check the status of your scholarship once youve submitted it to ensure youve included all information.

After submitting your application, take a deep breath and relax. Keep a positive attitude as you wait to hear back from the scholarship providers.

We also recommend keeping an organized list of the scholarships youve applied for, so you can estimate how much money youve applied for, and update it whenever you receive your scholarship application results!

Search Widely For Scholarships

Local scholarships are a great place to start when it comes to searching for scholarship opportunities, as these awards tend to be less competitive. However, you shouldnt limit your scope to just your local area when searching for college scholarships. A broader scope means more scholarship opportunities you can apply for, which increases your chances of winning. How do you go about it? There are many ways.

For a start, you can sign up with some national scholarship database websites. Various categories of national scholarships are available through online search tools. Foundations, college boards, religious organizations, media channels, libraries, and your intended institutions financial aid office can provide information regarding scholarships. Additionally, you can inquire from federal and state government agencies that you know offer college scholarships.

One way to fast-track your scholarship search is by identifying the scholarship category that fits you best. For instance, some scholarships may target minority students in low-income households and those with disabilities seeking financial aid to pursue an undergraduate degree program. Merit-based scholarships may target students with excellent academic records . Athletic scholarships are another merit-based scholarship for high school students who participate and excel in high school sports activities.

How Do I Apply For A Grant

Not sure if youre eligible for a grant? Two words: apply anyway. In the 2018-19 school year, $2.6 billion was unclaimed in federal grants. Students who didnt apply missed out on an average of $4,000!

If you would rather have that money in your college fund, all you need to do is fill out your FAFSA. This is the official form used to apply for federal and state aid.

Additionally, some schools use what is known as a College Scholarship Service Profile Profile. Similar to the FAFSA, its an online application that collects information to award non-federal aid. If your target school uses this system, you need to create a College Board account and fill out your CSS Profile.

But dont get these two applications confused the FAFSA is the only form used for all types of federal aid, such as Pell Grants and federal loans, while the CSS Profile is only used at select schools for institutional aid.

Both the FAFSA and CSS Profile need to be completed and submitted on time, so keep an eye out for deadlines!

Make Your Application Stand Out

Whether merit-based or need-based, college scholarships can be very competitive, and only the best candidates are awarded after a rigorous selection process. To be selected, your application needs to stand out. But how do you make your application stand out? Many factors can go into submitting a great application. However, for most scholarship categories, your essay can be a significant component.

How do you get your essay right? Well, before you start writing, try to define your long-term career and academic goals, identify how the scholarship will help you realize them, and connect them with your personal story. That way, it becomes easier to answer the question: What makes you the best candidate for this scholarship? That said, your essay should reflect your personality and ambition while strictly adhering to the word count.

Letters of recommendation can also be important. Ensure they come from adults who know you directly and can speak favorably of you, preferably a teacher or coach. Avoid sending more letters of recommendation than required, though.

An outstanding application with a compelling essay, a great recommendation letter, and excellent academic qualifications can differentiate you from other candidates, increasing your chances of standing out to the scholarship organizers.
