Opinions run deep on both sides, and those positions seem to be deeply held and mostly inflexible. Lately, it seems that more and more people are lending support to the idea of free community college.
The Money Has To Come From Somewhere
If America were to move to a tuition-free college policy, where would the money come from? The short and simple answer is taxes. Who gets taxed seems to vary based on who is talking, but it seems certain that the upper echelons of American society will see increased taxes if this passes. There is a likelihood that it will increase the upper-middle-class as well. Or maybe it will all come from Wall Street speculation taxes. The point is, all we know is that someone will pay these dues through taxes. The uncertainty of who will carry the burden is not making many Americans comfortable.

Free colleges might seem like a good idea, but there are many problems in this system. First, schools have the possibility of being overfilled because so many people would apply to free colleges. Desirable degrees will likely be taken because of so many people getting a free education to get them. Skill jobs, which are jobs that dont necessarily require a degree, would have less people working in that field, and because they dont require a degree, many people would probably have a degree and would not want to waste it. Taxes would be a lot higher, because America already pays for public schooling, so adding free colleges, which takes a lot more money to run, would be an extremely large amount of money to pay.
Students might take their ability of getting a free education less seriously. Overfilling colleges would mean that the job you might get would most likely be taken upon by other people who want the same job, which would lower your percentage to actually get the job. If a lot of students get degrees, it could possibly lead to a number of workers being inactive during their work, which would be based on their limitations.

Free community college for everyone is the centerpiece of President Bidens $302 billion, 10-year investment in expanding access to higher education. Though it has been hailed as a revolutionary proposal, this walking-through-the-door access doesnt solve higher educations biggest challenge boosting the number of community college students who graduate or transfer to a four-year school.
As one undergraduate said: Anyone can get into college. The challenge is staying in college.
The data tells an abysmal tale. Only four in 10 community college students earn a degree or transfer to a university within six years. Eighty percent of community college freshmen aspire to a bachelors degree or higher, but fewer than a sixth of them reach their goal.
Those who would benefit the most from an associate degree fare especially badly. Just 36 percent of Latino students and 28 percent of Black students graduate. Students from low-income families do worse. Among those with family incomes below $30,000, fewer than one in six earn a degree.
Nationwide, if the community college graduation rate is going to rise, data-driven strategies like these need to be replicated.

So lets see how this will work. We will encourage students to attend a college where only a small amount of entering students earn a degree. And of course, we wont be able to stop students from taking out a student loan. Nope! You see, the cost of attendance as calculated by the school and regulated by the U.S. Department of Education far outweighs tuition and includes room and board, transportation and more. And schools cant prohibit students from borrowing more than the cost of tuition. The result? Students will enroll at a free college and borrow money for the cost of attendance. Then, they will drop out and have a student loan but no skills. Brilliant.
