Write A Killer Admissions Essay

Activities That DO Impress Colleges!!! OWN the College Admissions Process

The admissions essay can be one of the most difficult parts of the application process. Some colleges require fairly lengthy essays with little to no guidance on content. Each school has its own admissions essay guidelines, but regardless of the parameters, submitting a stellar piece of writing is a must. Striking the right balance between professionalism and personalization takes practice and as the chart below illustrates, writing the admission essay is the most difficult aspect of the college admissions process so you want to make sure you put in the time and effort necessary to write a good one:

  • Carefully consider how to answer essay questions. Before you even put paper to pen, make sure you understand that is being asked of you. Take the time to carefully deliberate what you want to say and how you want to say it. This will save you time and possibly a few rewrites.
  • Consider ways to distinguish yourself from the thousands of other applicants. Heres the tricky part striking the right balance between professionalism and personalization. You dont want submit an essay that doesnt stand out, but at the same time, you dont want to submit that is completely irrelevant. Bottom line you want to answer the question and be honest!
  • Brainstorm ideas. Again, take some time to really consider what is being asked of you before you start writing. This is a very important step, as it helps to streamline the writing process and organize your thoughts.
  • Mini Felt Letter Board

Message boards are definitely in vogue right now.

They pop in pictures of dorm rooms everywhere. Its one of those things every girl needs for Christmas, that is if she doesnt have one already.

I like these mini letter boards because there are lots of colors to pick from. Bonus points if you spell out a cute message on the board before wrapping it!

Heres What Actually Happens When You Get Caught Cheating

Ever wondered what actually happens if you get caught cheating on a test?

Do you skip over the academic integrity section in the syllabus? Zone out when the professor goes over it on the first day of a new course?

Of course you do. Youre a normal person.

Itll never concern me much, I figure. So long as I dont copy and paste my essay from Wikipedia. Or sneak a cheat sheet into an exam on the bottom of my shoe.

    Join Clubs With Girls

The university at which I studied offered a lot of clubs and activity groups that the students could join. I am pretty sure that your university offers those things too.

Joining the right clubs can be a blessing for your sex life.

What do you think, how many hot girls will you meet by joining the rugby team?

Well, in case you are into girls with killer instinct and enough muscles to rip you apart, you can go there. If you, however, want to have sex with elegant, sexy and feminine women, the rugby team shouldnt be your first choice.

Dont get me wrong. In case you absolutely love to play rugby you should of course join the rugby team. Nevertheless, you cant deny that there are other activities where the chances to meet beautiful women are higher.

I know that you just go there to work on your flexibility. Its okay.

    Managing Your Workload Wisely

This graphic shows the hardest college to get into in ...
  • 1Choose classes you’re interested in. It’s hard to do well in a class you’re not excited about. As much as you can, stick to classes that are relevant to your interests and your career goals.XResearch source
  • Most college degree programs require you to take some general education courses, so you’re bound to get stuck with a few classes you aren’t interested in. Even if you aren’t thrilled by those classes, try to focus on the big picture and think about how they will help you meet your overall goals.
  • Tip: You may be able to get out of taking some general education classes or prerequisites if you can demonstrate that you already have equivalent skills or knowledge. Talk to your advisor about whether your program allows course overrides or other workarounds for avoiding required classes that you don’t really need.

  • 2Avoid taking too many classes at once. If you’re overloaded with work, you’ll find it hard to put in the time and effort you need to do well in any of your classes. Avoid exceeding a full load during a given term, and try to balance 1 or 2 difficult classes with a couple of easier ones.XResearch source
  • If you ever feel like your course load is too much to handle, talk to your advisor about the possibility of dropping a class. Just make sure to do it early enough in the term that dropping will not affect your GPA.

How Do I Prepare For College Academically

Many high schools offer Advanced Placement classes, and some offer International Baccalaureate courses or Dual Enrollment opportunities, which have the added benefit of allowing you to earn college credit. Dual credit for IB and AP courses is based on taking the corresponding IB Higher Level test or AP exam at the end of the course. The required score to earn dual credit will vary from college to college. Depending on your score and your intended major, the awarded college credit may allow you to waive a class, start in the next course level, or fulfill elective credits.

Some high schools will add weight to your Grade Point Average for advanced classes such as AP or Honors, so taking these classes can boost your GPA. Another advantage to taking AP, IB, Dual Enrollment, or Honors level courses is that the class is listed as such on your high school transcript and colleges will know that you chose to challenge yourself academically. This motivation shows a college board that you are better prepared for the college classroom.

One word of caution: These kinds of classes are difficult. Know yourself! Dont take a class if you are not prepared to do reasonably well with hard work and effort. It is especially important to take Dual Enrollment classes seriously, as these college credits and good grades will be a part of your college transcript.

Part of your academic profile is comprised of test scores and grade-point averages . Many schools have specific GPA or test score requirements therefore, its important to maintain a strong GPA and passing exam scores in order to be accepted into a good school.

First things first. What is a GPA? A GPA is the sum of the unit value for each course multiplied by the numerical value of the grades. Sounds complicated, right? Lets break it down. As if going to school and volunteering werent enough, colleges also look for students with real-world experience and a passion to expand learning outside the classroom. A part-time job, summer employment, volunteering, extracurricular activities, and other outside-of-the-classroom activities demonstrate your ability to take initiative and adjust priorities. If you can handle all of the above while going to school and maintaining a high GPA, colleges will take notice.

    So if time permits:

  • Get a part-time job. Working on the weekends or a few hour a week after school will not only help you save money for college but will give you real-world experience that will look great on your college application. Those who work just a few hours per week also tend to have higher GPAs! Take a look at the chart below:
  • Learn a trade such as wood carving, landscaping, carpentry, sewing, culinary arts, pottery, etc. Sounds a little unusual, right? • Take or yoga classes. Both activities are great stress relievers and are known to increase confidence and vigilance. Honing these skills will help you stay focused during your college readiness exams, ultimately improving your scores and impressing the admissions board.

What Is The Path To College Hockey

The toughest part about this question is that when parents ask, they are typically looking for specific step by step answer.

Often, parents are hoping for insight into the right team, or league, or showcase tournament that will help propel them or their child to college hockey stardom.

Unfortunately, like many things in life there is no simple or easy path to college hockey. Every players road is different and, with few exceptions, all are long, winding, and wrought with potholes and detours.

Ok, so we dispelled the myth that there is some magic path to college hockey

    Now what?

Lets take a look at how players actually get there.

Like any difficult task in life, achieving this goal takes hard work, skill, time, determination and a good bit of luck.

There are, of course, things that a player can do to help increase their odds, but a lot of that starts with becoming educated about the realities of college hockey and the different paths that you can take to get there.

    Volunteering Experience With Measurable Impact

Colleges love it when an applicant has not simply volunteered but has also made a measurable impact with their volunteering efforts. What does this mean exactly? If you have volunteered somewhere or for an organization, your assistance should have resulted in a noticeable, positive change to the group, community, or area you were aiming to help.

For instance, say you volunteered at a local library. Maybe the library was struggling to get funds to continue operating, and you came up with the idea to hold a 24-hour reading marathon in order to raise money. The fundraiser ended up making more than $5,000, a figure that would be a concrete indicator of the positive impact your service had on the library. With your college application, then, you could specifically mention how your initiative allowed the library to remain open.

Note that you don’t need to have assumed a leadership role in order to have made a positive impact through your service. That said, college admissions committees are often very big fans of students who show evidence of their budding leadership skills.
