How To Choose A Good In

State college rankings can assist with narrowing down the selection process. Once a short list of top picks is put together, the incoming student can arrange campus visits and talk to admissions counselors to decide which public college is the best fit. A student should consider whats most important to him or her in a college. For instance, some students thrive in smaller class settings with lower teacher to student ratios. Others may prefer larger campuses with a variety of class offerings and majors to choose from. The availability of certain sports and clubs could also factor into a decision. As an example, both private and state colleges can be part of NCAA Division I athletics. To qualify as a NCAA Division I team, the college must meet certain budget and facility requirements. The NCAA will also evaluate the number of scholarships offered to student athletes. Besides availability of sports and clubs, the student wants to get the overall feel for campus life. Questions may include: Does the campus have a positive student culture and an active community? Does the college have a reputation as a party school?

Ranking The Best States For College Students

Top Universities in the United States 2017

To help illustrate some factors would-be college students and their parents should consider, ranked each of the 50 states based on five factors relevant to the affordability and effectiveness of college programs:

  • Average cost.

Since the idea is for students to be open-minded about where they look for the right college, the study looked at total costs for both in-state and out-of-state students living on campus.

  • Retention rate.

Its a bad sign if a lot of students are dropping out or transferring. Average retention rates show how good a job schools in different states do at holding onto their students.

  • Student-to-faculty ratio.

Do you hope to have individual interactions with your college teachers, or are you content to be one of dozens of students sitting in a large lecture hall? The student-to-faculty ratio can give you a sense of which type of college experience youd have in store.

  • 6-year graduation rate.

Many students need more than the traditional four years to get a bachelors degree, but if the process drags on too long the costs start mounting up and the chances of completing the degree fade. The higher the 6-year graduation rate, the more students in that state are having a successful college experience.

  • ranked the four-year colleges of all 50 states in each of these five categories based on data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Those individual category rankings were then averaged to determine the overall rankings.

Alabama Has The Best Party Schools

All work and no play, as the old adage goes, makes Jack a dull boy. And if you want to have fun while completing your program, consider sending your application to a party school.

Just because party schools tend to have a bad reputation doesnt mean you should turn your back on them even if you dream of going to one.

Besides letting you have a blast, attending a party school can also help you develop better social skills and create a network of friends, both of which can help you find the best jobs after graduation.

The number one party school in the US differs from one college ranking site to the other.

However, the Princeton Review, Niche and prep Scholar all agree that the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa is the leader of the bunch.

A public research university located in Tuscaloosa, the school is known for its law school, too. Its also referred to as The Capstone as its said to be the capstone of the public school system of the state of Alabama.

Besides the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa, there are other party schools in the Heart of Dixie, such as:

States With The Best Public School Systems

There are many factors that contribute to a great public school system: performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials, to name a few. Although the quality of public schools can vary greatly within a state, personal finance site WalletHub recently set out to determine which states generally have the top ranked school systems from K-12.

Massachusetts ranked as the No. 1 state for public schools, taking the lead in both quality and safety. New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Virginia followed behind. Some of the worst ranked states for public schools included New Mexico, Louisiana, Alaska and Arizona, along with District of Columbia.

The study broke results down by additional categories, such as states with the lowest dropout rate, or the highest SAT and ACT scores. States such as Iowa, New Jersey, West Virginia, Nebraska and Texas have the lowest dropout rates, whereas the highest dropout rates can be found in Alaska, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico and District of Columbia.

In Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin, students have the highest median SAT scores. The lowest scores can be found in District of Columbia, Delaware and Idaho.

Budget cuts surely have an impact on the quality of public school education, with funds declining over the past decades. Educators are asked to do morefederal and state mandateswith less funding, says Barbara Jeanne Erwin, clinical associate professor at Indiana University Bloomington.
