Best Laptop For Computer Science Students

Our choice for the best laptop for computer science students is the Microsoft Surface 3.

This is an excellent all-around computer that will have all of the bells and whistles that you might be looking for in your laptop.

Design

Starting with the design, the Surface 3 has a 13.5 inch touchscreen display. This means that it is a little bit smaller than some of the other laptops that we have looked at, but still in the size range for what you should be looking for in a laptop. The laptop has a few colour options to choose from as well, whether you prefer Cobalt Blue, Matte Black, New Sandstone, or even Platinum.

Looking at its ports, the Surface 3 has a USB Type-C port and USB Type-A ports as well. These will allow you to connect it to other displays, docking stations, or any kind of accessory that might need that connectivity. The device is very lightweight, only weight 2.79 pounds, making it incredibly easy to carry around.

The battery life of the Surface 3 is amazing, lasting up to 11.5 hours on one charge. Then, if you have killed the battery, you can go to a full charge in just over an hour. The trackpad on this laptop is also about 20 percent larger than the trackpad on the Surface 2, giving you more room to work with.

Reasons to avoid

The Acer Swift 3 ticks pretty much every box for what makes the best student laptops. It’s affordable, without making too many compromises, and yet it’s powerful enough to easily handle day to day tasks, including web browsing and document creation, making it perfect for students.

It’s also thin and light enough to easily carry around school or campus, but with a decent build quality which means it won’t easily break. The latest model brings some choice hardware upgrades, so it’s now a better performer than ever before, and battery life has been given a boost as well.

It’s not the most powerful laptop in the world, and it won’t handle games, but for an affordable and dependable student laptop, this one is hard to beat.

Reasons to avoid

Many of the best student laptops are Chromebooks due to their fantastic value for money. They run Chrome OS, which is less resource-hungry than Windows 10, which means Chromebooks can use lower-powered hardware and still offer excellent performance.

This means Chromebooks are often a lot cheaper than Windows 10 devices, and the Acer Chromebook 314 is in our view the best budget Chromebook for students. With a low price, it means you’re not blowing your student loan on a laptop, and it still offers great features including a bright and vibrant 14-inch display and 12 hour battery life. So, you can work on this thing throughout an entire school day, and you’ll still have battery life left over.

Which Form Factor Should I Emphasize While Purchasing A Laptop For College

Best Laptop for College Students Under 600 in 2021 ...

As a student, your choice of form factor depends on your preferences, mobility, and task-based requirements. For instance, if you are a frequent traveler and need to use the laptop even when on the move, purchasing a convertible to 2-in-1 is a better option. However, if you are a desk-based person, consider getting a clamshell with stylus support and a powerful processor. In either case, you are better off with a touch-supported notebook.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5700U | Graphics: Onboard Vega | RAM: 8GB | Storage: 512GB SSD| Display: 14-inch1080p | Battery: up to 17 hours | Weight: 2.62 pounds

When it comes to budget laptops, you need plenty of memory, plenty of storage, and a capable processor decent onboard graphics is a nice touch too. The Acer Swift 3 has all of that in spades, combining half a terabyte of fast NVMe SSD storage with the ultra-capable, eight core AMD Ryzen 5700U processor. The 8GB of RAM isn’t a lot, but it’s more than enough for basic web browsing, some light gaming and photo editing, and general office work.

The 8 Vega GPU cores on the CPU are more than enough for playing older games, and indie and esport titlesjust don’t expect it to handle modern AAA games very well at all.

The overall design is light and portable with a relatively sturdy frame, and the screen’s anti-glare coating makes it usable outside even on bright days, despite the display itself not being that bright. At 1080p acros 14 inches, though, it still looks crisp and clear, whether you’re browsing the web or watching your favorite movies and shows. For well under $700 at its discounted rate, the Acer Swift 3 is by far the best affordable laptop for 2022.

What To Look For In A Laptop For College

The first thing to consider is budget. How much are you willing to spend on a laptop? If youre working with an inflexible budget, Chromebooks are a good option. Theyre affordable and designed to handle everyday tasks like writing papers, working on spreadsheets, and so on. Chromebook prices can range anywhere from $200 up to $1,000. If you want to spend a bit more, laptops with convertible touchscreens offer a great deal of functionality. You can flip the screen around and use it like a tablet or prop it up like an easel for watching movies.

If youve got a jammed-packed schedule, youll probably be running from class to class with very little downtime in between. Thats why wed recommend a laptop with a long lasting battery. Wed recommend something thatll last 7 to 10 hours-plus on a single charge, unless you want a notebook that can play games on the sidegaming laptops are notorious for their shorter endurance, even during everyday tasks. That 7 to 10 hours is a good figure if you plan on taking your laptop everywhere with you.

The final thing is a decent keyboard. In college, youre going to be spending a lot of time typing. Depending on your personal preference, you may want either a full or short travel keyboard. Mechanical keyboards, for example, normally have longer travel. This helps prevent accidental keystrokes. The keys also give a lot of tactile feedback, as they bounce back after theyre pressed down.

  • Processor: 11th-gen Intel Core i5 ~ Intel Core i7
  • Operating system: Windows 10 Home
  • Memory and storage: 8GB ~ 16GB of RAM, 256GB ~2TB storage

Pros: Excellent design, attractive screen, long battery life, good performance

Cons: Webcam could be better

Dell’s flagship laptop has always stood out for its eye-catching design, nearly borderless screen, and solid performance. That’s still true in 2021 with the newest version of the Dell XPS 13, which runs on Intel’s 11th-generation processors and now offers the option for an OLED display. The cheapest model is currently on sale for $783.99 through Dell, which is a great price for a laptop of this caliber.

The XPS 13’s design is a big part of what makes it a great choice for college students in particular. It starts at just 2.6 pounds, making it even lighter than the MacBook Air. Since there are barely any borders framing its screen, Dell was able to cram a 13-inch screen in what’s essentially the size of an 11-inch laptop. That could be useful for college students in need of a portable laptop that will fit in almost any bag.

The XPS 13 also has one of the most comfortable keyboards I’ve ever typed on, a perk students will appreciate when writing long papers or taking notes in class.

The latest version of HP’s long running Envy 13 laptop is the best example yet, fixing many of the issues of its predecessors and updating the hardware to offer excellent performance at a competitive price. It also offers decent build quality, 11-hour-plus battery life, and has a surprisingly bright and attractive display. It’s an all-in-one package that has few shortcomings.

Along with being fast enough and portable enough to handle all sorts of college workloads, the HP Envy 13 has a robust selection of USB-A and Thunderbolt ports, giving it plenty of potential for attaching external devices for all sorts of tasks.

Hp 15 Touchscreen Laptop

If you are looking for a more middle-of-the-road laptop to take to your computer science classes, check out the 2021 HP 15. HP laptops are neither the most nor least expensive laptops on the market. So, you can expect decent performance, just maybe not the highest amount of quality.

Design

Lets start with its design. The HP 15 has a 15.6 inch touchscreen. They do market it as being HD, but its resolution is really 1366 x 768, which is simply not as good as other screens that are on the market. It is a touchscreen though, so you will still be able to touch the screen directly rather than needed to scroll with a trackpad.

The laptop comes with a USB Type-C port, which is what you will really be looking for as far as ports go. It comes with three USB 3.0 ports, so you will have plenty of places to plug in external hard drives or any other devices that might need that connection.

There is an internal fan, as there is with all computers, but you are more likely to hear this computers fan. Knowing ahead of time that the fan might make noise is important, so you dont think that your CPU is becoming overwhelmed.

The laptop weighs 4.49 pounds, so it is in the weight range that you should be looking for.

Performance

The operating system for this computer is the Windows 10 Home, not the Windows 10 S, which might be a little surprising since it is a touchscreen.

Best Windows: Dell Xps 13 9310

  • Pricey

If you love Apples stellar build quality, but prefer Windows as your platform of choice, then the Dell XPS 13 9310 offers a great alternative to the Macbook Air. It features a gorgeous 13.4-inch 1920 x 1200 display, a durable aluminum and carbon fiber body, and a trackpad that is every bit the equal of Apples. Similarly, you can expect an excellent keyboard, and a light and razor thin profile. This thing is eminently portable.

Of course, the caveat is that for the price, the base model of the XPS 13 is rather disappointing in terms of its internal hardware. You only get 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and an integrated GPU. However, on the plus side you do benefit from Intels latest 11th generation Core i3 processor, though even this is less powerful than Id like to see. However, if you dont mind spending more, RAM, storage, and processor can all be upgraded.

Its important to remember though, that compared to its Apple counterpart the Dell XPS 13 9310 is comparable in terms of cost and components. What youre paying for is looks and build quality.

Size: 13 inches | Resolution: 1920 x 1200 | CPU: Intel Core i3-1115G4 | GPU: Integrated | RAM: 8GB DDR4 | Storage: 256GB SSD | Touchscreen: No
