Can I Transfer With A Low Gpa

Applying to MIT with a 1.8 GPA

Anyone can transfer college with low GPA scores if they know as much as possible about the admissions system. Trying to transfer to another college with a low GPA is nowhere near as difficult as you might think. Its even shown in the statistics that its a much simpler process than most people realize.

What Is Considered A Low Gpa

To know what a low GPA is, you need to understand what the GPA is. Then put it into context of the colleges you want to apply to. Most colleges use a point scale of 4.0. So, a grade of A = 4 points, B = 3 points, C = 2 points, D= 1 point and F = zero points. The average of all the points for all the courses you took in high school is your GPA. According to the latest study by the NCES, GPAs have gone up over time. In their last study, they found the national average GPA was 3.0.

If your GPA is less than the national average, you might guess it is a low GPA. And when compared in this way, anything below 3.0 is low. But many colleges do not use the GPA to predict your readiness for college. These schools may not set a GPA you need to get in. Or, they may set their standards at 2.0 or 2.5. In this case, if you have a 2.75 GPA, while lower than others in the US, it may be high for that college.

Write A Great Personal Statement Or Essay

Many colleges want to know who is behind the GPA. As the GPA is a static number, your essay or personal statement can bring it to life. Colleges tend to include specific details to format these things. Desired word count, for instance, or AP style. It is a good idea to stick to their structure as it shows you can read and follow directions. But, you can be creative, positive and even emotional. Describe what you learned and what direction you hope your career will take.

If the reason you got a low GPA taught you something, it might be appropriate to fit it in too. It may point to your strengths and how youve matured as a person. Show this side of yourself to the admissions team. Be clear, focused, use spell check and highlight your writing skills.

Improving your grades will improve your GPA and you have the luxury of time to work your way up to a GPA with more options, even a 3.0 if you work hard.

For seniors, it wont be possible to significantly raise your GPA in time for most college submissions. Some deadlines extend into February and March, so theres a chance to move your GPA up a few tenths in the first semester and add a few more college options, but theres also the option of attending a 2-year college. Often referred to as a community college, opting to go to school locally for the first two years of college can be a great option for any student, since tuition costs are low and many students live at home while attending, saving the cost of room and board. Once youve completed those two years, raised your GPA, and are sufficiently ready, you can apply to transfer to the college of your choice based on your new and improved GPA.

That breaks down as 31% were B students , 10% were C students and 2% had grades below 70. So, either a D, E, or F. There are also colleges with open admissions policies. Community and vocational schools, for example. These schools might accept anyone with a high school diploma or GED.

Unfortunately, not too good. As far as classification goes or used to go, consider a grade of 4,0 a solid A, 3.0 a B and 2.0 a C. Then, a 1.8 falls into a D class but almost a C. I dont know what level of school you have but, if it is high school, this is a determining factor. What you need to do is to sit down with a guidance counselor for an evaluation. They will determine why you are achieving these low grades and what can be done to raise them. I found that these school counselors are really nice people and do want to help you. I had the same problem in my high school years. I found out that home environment was the problem. I hope this helps. Repeating these courses which have the low grades can help and you might just have to have one or two courses to do it. Also, you may be able to substitute some of these courses. Remember, your transcripts are private and the only people who is supposed to see this is authorized by the school and you. Dont stress over it but get the help as needed. Good luck in improving your grades.
