Why Is It Important For My School To Be Accredited

If you attend an institution that is not nationally or regionally accredited, it can be a waste of time and money. Making sure your school is accredited is important for a number of reasons that can affect you both now and later, including:

  • Financial AidStudents cannot receive federal financial aid if they attend an institution that is not regionally or nationally accredited. In order to receive federal financial aid, an institution must be a Title IV-eligible institution. Title IV refers to the section of the Higher Education Act that oversees federal student aid. Institutions deemed Title IV-eligible are qualified by the U.S. Department of Education. Students that attend them are eligible to receive federal student financial aid. Title IV-eligible institutions can be either regionally or nationally accredited.
  • In the event you decide to transfer, your new institution may not accept credits from a non-accredited institution.
  • Impact on EmploymentOver 50% of all employers conduct background checks and confirm the educational credentials of potential employees. Graduating from an accredited institution lets employers know youve received your degree from a legitimate institution that has given you the skills needed to succeed in your chosen field.

What Is A Regionally Accredited Online College

30 Best Nationally Accredited Online Colleges 2021

Regional accreditation is the accreditation of schools, colleges and universities in the United States by one of the seven regional accreditation agencies. Each regional accreditation body oversees the vast majority of public and private educational institutions, both nonprofit and for-profit, in their region.

Regional accreditation, on the other hand, is the standard recognized by most traditional colleges and universities and, therefore, is more widely accepted. National and regional accreditation is recognized by the United States Department of Education, but regional accreditation facilitates the transfer of university credits to other regionally accredited institutions.

National accreditation is generally in use by universities that want their students to begin their careers as quickly as possible. These include technical, vocational, correspondence and religious schools. National accreditation transfer credits are not widely in recognition by regionally accredited colleges and universities.

Institutional Accreditation: What Is It

Both regional and national accreditation are ways of confirming that a whole institutionlike a university, college, community college, or trade schoolis offering quality education to its students. This is a quality assurance system that schools voluntarily engage in to have an outside organization investigate their programs and policies to ensure that students will receive valuable and useful education.

Accreditation helps members of the public avoid scams like diploma mills or subpar instructional programs. If a school you are considering is not institutionally accredited, that is a serious red flag.

The older, more established, and more respected type of institutional accreditation is regional accreditation. Public and nonprofit private schools are almost all regionally accredited, while trade, career, and for-profit schools are usually nationally accredited. It might sound like national accreditation would be more prestigious, but actually, the opposite is true. The standards for national accreditation are less rigorous than regional accreditation, and national accreditation is considerably less useful when transferring schools.

What Is Programmatic Accreditation

Rasmussen University: Innovating Since 1900

There is a third type of accreditation that prospective students should look for when evaluating institutions: programmatic accreditationsometimes called specialized accreditation or professional accreditation.

While national and regional accrediting agencies review higher educational institutions as a whole, programmatic accrediting agencies examine individual academic units, programs or disciplinary offerings to ensure they are providing students with a quality education in a particular area of study. Programmatic accreditation is often at the national level since these agencies cover a particular specialty and evaluate all programs nationally within that specialty, such as schools of business, or nursing programs. This type of national programmatic accreditation differs from the national institutional accreditation covered above.

Drexel University is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education . Many programs available at Drexel also hold national programmatic accreditation, including:

Why Your School Should Be Accredited

In the United States, educational institutions are allowed to operate with a great deal of freedom. Accreditation is awarded to schools that meet basic standards of academic quality. These standards are determined and developed by private organizations.

There are several large, regional accrediting associations, such as the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which accredit institutions within a particular area of the United States. These groups generally award accreditation to an entire university. There are also, however, smaller, specialized accreditation agencies. These agencies typically accredit smaller components of an institution, such as a nursing program or a psychology department.

Affordability: One Major Factor

A Closer Look at the Rasmussen College Eagan Campus ...

Cost can be an important deciding factor. If better means more affordable, then nationally accredited online universities are often the winners.

According to , the average cost of a regionally accredited online MBA is $25,869. On the other hand, the average cost for a nationally accredited online MBA is only $12,700.

Thats a savings of about $8,000.

In addition, Get Educateds surveys of online universities indicate that regionally accredited colleges often employ stricter admissions requirements, including higher entrance GPAs. They also are more likely to require standardized admission exams, such as the SAT, GRE or GMAT.

Although nationally accredited schools are cheaper on average, if you later change your plans and want to transfer to a different school or program, you will have far fewer choices that will allow you to transfer credits you have already earned. If you end up repeating classes, you will actually pay more in the long run. If you are fairly sure you will not want to get another degree later, then a nationally accredited school can offer you a great cost savings.

Dont entirely discount regionally accredited schools if your budget is tight. There are many very affordable programs, especially from community colleges, public universities, and through distance education that can give you an education that is more accepted by schools you may want to transfer into or by employers looking for qualified job applicants.

Accreditation And Transferring Credits

For students wishing to transfer from one school to another, most accredited institutions only accept credit from other accredited institutions. Courses taken at a school without accreditation will need to be repeated, costing more time and money.

Dont be fooled by the low costs of schools without accreditation. The long-term price of attending such an institution is much greater than the tuition of any accredited school. Schools go through the accreditation process to provide their students with a worthwhile education that will be recognized by employers and other schools. Its worth taking advantage of this.

Paying attention to the type of accreditation your school has is especially important if there is any chance you may want to transfer to a different school during your degree or study elsewhere for further qualification. If your first school is not accredited, then your new school is unlikely to accept the credits you have accumulated from your studies there. Even if it is accredited, it will need to be accredited by the same board as your new school if you want to be sure your credits will transfer. The best way to ensure you will be free to transfer credits is to attend only schools listed on the U.S. Department of Educations website.

How Colleges Are Accredited

30 Best Nationally Accredited Online Colleges 2021

In order to become accredited, an educational institution must take several steps, starting out with the agency and institution establishing which criteria must be met.

The school is then supposed to give themselves a self-evaluation based on that set criteria. If a school believes that they have met all the standards, then a team is sent by the accrediting agency to perform a check.

If the team from the external agency concludes that the school has met the expectations, they can then grant accreditation.

It does not end there, however. Revaluations take place every few years to ensure that they are still eligible. The whole process generally takes between 18 months and 2 years to complete.
