How To Send Fafsa To Colleges

Don't Miss

Not Filling Out The Form Early Enough

How to add a college to your FAFSA

Filling out the FAFSA as close to Oct. 1 as possible for the following school year is very important for getting as much financial aid as possible. Some types of financial aid are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. In these cases, the longer you wait, the less money is available.

Put together a list of federal deadlines, state deadlines and individual college deadlines to make sure you dont miss the final application date. Deadlines can vary by individual type of financial aid, as well.

You Should File A Fafsa Even If You Think You Wont Qualify For Financial Aid

Many families don’t complete the FAFSA because they think their income is too high. Others think the form is just too complicated. But anyone who fills out the FAFSA will at least qualify for a federally insured, direct student loan and perhaps other grants, scholarships, work-study or loans. Some scholarships that are not based on financial need still require a FAFSA.

What Happens After Submitting The Fafsa

If you completed the FAFSA online, your application is typically processed within 3-5 days. If you mailed in a paper application, it could take 7-10 days.

Once its processed, youll receive a Student Aid Report , which summarizes the information you provided on the FAFSA. Review the SAR to make sure everything is accurate if theres a mistake, go back and edit your FAFSA.

The SAR will also list the expected family contribution , which is how much your family is expected to pay toward your education. Your FAFSA application, SAR, and EFC are sent to the colleges on your list, and the schools use that information to calculate your financial aid package.

You May Make Some Changes To Your Fafsa After You Submit It

Most of the information you provide on the FAFSA cannot be updated once you submit it because it must be accurate as of the day you file the form. For example, if you spent some of your savings after filing the FAFSA, you may not update this information. You can, however, correct a mistake on your Student Aid Report after you submit your FAFSA through the FAFSA website or by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 433-3243.

If your familys circumstances change after you submit your FAFSA, such as one or both of your parents or guardians lose their job or unemployment benefits, you cannot adjust the FAFSA form directly. But you can contact the financial aid office of each of the colleges you selected to receive your FAFSA information and explain the change in circumstance. The college may ask you to submit a letter detailing the changes along with a copy of supporting documentation.

Follow these 7 steps to help make sure youre submitting your online FAFSA application correctly:

  • Create a Federal Student Aid ID . Youll need this in order to complete your FAFSA and to be able to log in to any other FSA borrower websites. If youre financially dependent on your parents, a parent will need to create his or her own, separate FSA ID.
  • To create your FSA ID, go to studentaid.gov and choose “Create Account.” Both the student and the parent will need their own IDs.

  • Gather your information. Being prepared will make the FAFSA application process easierand faster. Heres what youll need to have on hand for yourself, your spouse and/or your parents :
  • Social Security number
  • Alien registration number
  • federal tax returns, including W2s
  • Records of untaxed income
  • Bank records
  • Investment information
  • Your colleges: You must list at least 1 college to receive your information. You may update your choices later to receive aid at a different school.
  • Start a new FAFSA application. With your FSA ID in hand, start your application at fafsa.ed.gov. Follow the instructions to fill out your application. Youll see Help and Hints on the site throughout the application process. Refer to these whenever you have a question.

    Forgetting Login Or Application Information

The FSA ID is an ID you set up with a username and password when applying for federal student aid. Each person that has to supply informationparents and the studentneeds a separate ID in order to submit income information. Without everyones information, the FAFSA cant be processed.

Before the FAFSA application opens on Oct. 1 every year, make sure everyone has an FSA ID. If a student or parent has applied for financial aid before, they may already have one. But each applicant should take time now to check that they can log in and havent forgotten their password, for instance.

The FAFSA requires financial information such as bank and investment information for each member of the family required to submit information. Have statements from these accounts nearby as well as government ID numbers and Social Security card information.

Thinking You Missed The Fafsa Filing Deadline

While some aid is first-come, first-served, you wont get anything if you dont apply. The final date to submit the FAFSA for the 2022-2023 academic year is June 30, 2023. Colleges and states often have separate deadlines, so be sure to learn those, as well. You can look up your states deadline on the Federal Student Aid website.

What Is A High School Transcript

A high school transcript is a record of all your academicaccomplishments. It lists all the classes youve taken, when you took them, andthe grade you received in each class.

    Transcripts may also include:

    • Class rank how well you did academically, compared to the rest of your class
    • AP and honors classes
    • ACT/SAT scores
    • Disciplinary records

Transcripts come in two forms: official and unofficial. Theofficial version is sent directly by the high school to colleges or can be sentby students themselves on CFNC.org. They are usually sent electronically or ina sealed envelope to prevent tampering. Students can request an unofficialversion of their transcript from their counselor. You can also view yourunofficial transcript online at PowerSchool. Its a good idea to do this before you send transcripts to colleges so you can reviewthe information for mistakes.

    Determining Your Financial Aid

FAFSA Tip #4: How to List More Than 10 Colleges on the FAFSA Form

The first important step in determining your financial aid is figuring out how much you and your household can reasonably pay per year toward your college education . To determine this sum, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid . The FAFSA examines various factors, including how much your parents earn, how many people live in your home, and your parents savings. Based on this information, the Department of Education determines an index number that determines your eligibility for state and federal funding.

Many private colleges also require the CSS Profile, which is a financial aid application that is offered by the College Board. The Profile asks for detailed financial and household information and costs $25 to file for one school, plus $16 to send to each individual school you select. Fee waivers are available for students from low-income households. Schools that require the Profile will also determine your familys financial aid eligibility according to the information. Please note that colleges evaluate all of your financial information to calculate their own determination of your family’s expected contribution, which could differ from what the FAFSA calculates.

Based on these calculations, your college will determine your eligibility for financial aid. The amount of financial aid for which you are eligible is the difference between how much your family can pay and how much the school costs to attend. This amount is your financial need.

    Answer The Dependency Status Questions

In the dependency status section, youll be asked a series of specific questions to determine whether you are required to provide parent information on the FAFSA form.

The dependency guidelines are set by Congress and are different from those used by the Internal Revenue Service . Even if you live on your own, support yourself, and file taxes on your own, you may still be considered a dependent student for federal student aid purposes. If you are determined to be a dependent student, youll be required to report information about your parent. If youre determined to be an independent student, you wont have to provide parent information and you can skip the next step.

Once Your Transcripts Have Been Sent

Colleges and universities have online systems for applicantsto track their applications. In North Carolina, students can apply for college, track applications, and more at CFNC.org. Transcripts do not need to be sentwith your application, but most colleges will not begin the review processuntil all application materials have been submitted.

Most colleges have online checklists that will include anymissing supporting materials like standardized test scores, AP scores, andtranscripts. Its your responsibility to check the status of your application, just in case something gets lost in the mail or cyberspace.

Once you have accepted an offer of admission, your futurecollege will need a final transcript which shows when you graduated from high school. If you sent your transcript through CFNC.org, a final transcript willautomatically be sent to colleges you have selected after your school counselorhas posted final grades. This is a free service and you can track everythingalong the way. If you are not able to use CFNC.org, your high school willlikely ask where they want a final high school transcript to be sent. Collegeswill not release financial aid and scholarship awards until they receive afinal transcript, so check to make sure it arrives at your future school.

Now that you know all about your high school transcript andhow you can send it, its time to start applying to colleges! Good luck withyour applications, and dont forget that CFNC can help you apply for college.

    Review Your Expected Family Contribution

The information you report on your FAFSA form is used to calculate your EFC. Its very important to note that the EFC is not the amount of money your family will have to pay for college. Instead, the EFC is an index number used by financial aid offices to calculate your financial need. The formula they use is:

Cost of attendance Expected family contribution Your financial need

Each school will do its best to meet your financial need. Some schools may meet 100 percent of your financial need, and other schools may only meet 10 percentit just depends on the school and the financial aid they have available that year. You should complete the FAFSA form annually because there are many factors that can change from year to year.
