The 5 Rules Of College Dating I Had To Learn The Hard Way

When people think of college, parties, schoolwork and romance come to mind.

When I graduated from high school, I felt like I was finally in a place where I was ready to dedicate the time and commitment necessary to being in a relationship. I met a few guys who I liked when I went away. After a few months into my first year of college, I started dating someone who I thought could really make me happy.

At first, everything was going great. I finally felt like I had met someone who actually understood me and cared for me. He always walked me home after a date to make sure I got home safe. We could talk about anything, and it felt like we understood each other completely. It was magic.

Unfortunately, all that changed a few weeks later. We broke up. It turns out he was just like every guy I’ve met thus far in college: selfish and self-absorbed.

I had had crushes on a few other guys before I finally settled into that relationship, but every one of them seemed to have this similar way of thinking that I could not understand. They all believed dating was trivial, and that having feelings for someone was weak. They wanted to hook up with as many girls as possible, and didn’t care about who they were hurting along the way.

Here are the five things no one ever told me about dating in college:

Academic Information That Appears On Diploma

All diplomas include the official University Seal, as well as the signatures of the current President of the Board of Trustees, University President, and Executive Vice President and Provost.

The student name is printed on a diploma as it appears in the diploma name field in the “Graduation Status” section of LionPATH.

Copy Of A High School Diploma

Often, a copy of a high school diploma is sufficient for work or other proof. However, when dealing with state, federal or international entities, the original high school diploma may be asked for. This often means a paper that’s certified or has the watermark of the school or institution that the person has alleged they actually graduated from. There are many ways to determine if someone has completed their high school education with the culmination of a degree. If you’re asked to present a copy of your high school degree, ensure that the requester isnt asking for a sealed copy. Many institutions or employers, particularly those that are overseas, require watermarks and other pieces of authenticity to be in place before they’ll accept a copy of a high school diploma.

So Do Employers Check Degrees

Only about 34 percent of employers check the educational qualifications listed on resumes, according to a 2004 study by the Society for Human Resource Managementeven though the association found that 25 percent of people inflated their educational achievements on resumes.

Among the minority of employers who do check college credentials, most only check a students attendance or graduation dates. Almost none check whether the university itself is properly accredited.

One reason online degree mills continue to thrive, explains GetEducated.com founder Vicky Phillips, is that employers are confused about college accreditation. All degree mills are accredited. The trick is that they are accredited by fake agenciesagencies that they themselves have created.

Rochville claims accreditation by the Board of Online Universities Accreditation and the Universal Council for Online Education Accreditation.

Rochville may indeed be accredited by these agencies, but neither agency is recognized as a college accreditor by the U.S. Department of Educationor by any other valid international accrediting body, says Phillips.

Is The Demand For Education Background Checks Rising

You bet. Impressive credentials pay off according to data of the U.S. Census Bureau, people with bachelors degrees make twice as much a year as those with only a high school degree. This is why employers are turning to education verifications as an additional component of a standard background check more and more often. This is the case even though a standard check can yield a wealth of information about someone, which should suffice by all accounts.

Higher education shows someone is consistent and follows through on their goals. This is a very valuable trait for any employee to have. The ability to complete tasks is crucial in terms of meeting company goals, reaching targets and successful teamwork.

Addiction To Productivity Is Real

Dr. Sandra Chapman, director of the University of Texas at Dallas Center for BrainHealth points out that the brain can get addicted to productivity just as it can to more common sources of addiction, such as drugs, gambling, eating, and shopping.

A person might crave the recognition their work gives them or the salary increases they get, Chapman told the BBC.The problem is that just like all addictions, over time, a person needs more and more to be satisfied, and then it starts to work against you. Withdrawal symptoms include increased anxiety, depression, and fear.

Despite the harmful consequences, addiction is considered by some experts as a brain disease that affects the brains reward system and ends in compulsive behavior. Regardless, society tends to reward productivity or at least to treat it positively. As a result, this makes the problem even worse.

Its seen like a good thing: the more you work, the better, adds Chapman. Many people dont realize the harm it causes until a divorce occurs and a family is broken apart, or the toll it takes on mental health.

Because of the occasional negative issues with productivity, its no surprise that it is considered a mixed-blessing addiction.

Verify The School And Accreditation

HOW TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE EARLY

Schools that typically issue diplomas include high schools, technical schools, vocational schools and hospitals. It’s wise to ensure that the educational institution requires a formal course of study in order to receive the diploma and isn’t a diploma mill. Some schools also have accreditations and you can check on those online or by contacting the school and accrediting body.

Dont Forget Anything You Learned

When you start your new job, someone will tell you to, forget everything you hear. What theyre trying to tell you is that your book learning isnt going to help you in the real job. This is true to a point, but somewhat of a misnomer.

Its true that youll learn a lot of proprietary information in your job that you couldnt possibly have learned in school. There are also classes you took once, twice, or even every year that youll never use. Just because you took an accounting class doesnt mean any company in their right mind would allow you to touch their accounting data if youre not an actual accountant. The thing is, what you learned in school is important, and you should be mindful of discrepancies.

If you were working at Enron, Worldcom, Countrywide, etc. during the collapse of these companies, theres a good chance you were unaware you were even doing anything illegal. Even if you were aware, you likely didnt do anything to stop it. This is because you forgot what you learned in school. Ethics matter, and youre not always going to learn them in the real world. All the basic foundational skills and facts you learned in school are extremely important never forget that no matter what anyone tells you.

Its great to be productive. It really is. But sometimes, we chase productivity so much that it makes us, well, unproductive. Its easy to read a lot about how to be more productive, but dont forget that you have to make that time up.

This is my mantra:

The Warning Signs Of Productivity Addiction

  • Can you tell when youre wasting time? If so, have you ever felt guilty about it?
  • Does technology play a big part in optimizing your time management?
  • Do you talk about how busy you are most of the time? In your opinion, is hustling better than doing less?
  • What is your relationship with your email inbox? Are you constantly checking it or experience phantom notifications?
  • When you only check one item off your list, do you feel guilty?
  • Does stress from work interfere with your sleep?
  • Have you been putting things off, like a vacation or side project, because youre too swamped?

The first step toward turning around your productivity obsession is to recognize it. If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then its time to make a plan to overcome your addiction to productivity.

Why Parents May Conflict With Ferpa

Bernie Sanders: The Student Debt Whisperer (Ok, Maybe Not ...

The relationship between you and your parents, of course, might be a little different than the one the federal government has set up for you through FERPA. Many parents feel that because they pay for your tuition , they have the rightlegal or otherwiseto make sure that you are doing well and at least making solid academic progress . Other parents have certain expectations about, say, what your GPA should be or which classes you should be taking, and seeing a copy of your grades every semester or quarter helps verify that you are following their preferred course of study.

How you negotiate letting your parents see your grades is, of course, a very individual decision. Technically, through FERPA, you can keep that information to yourself. What doing so does to your relationship with your parents, however, can be a totally different story. Most students share their grades with their parents but each student, of course, must negotiate that choice for himself or herself. Keep in mind that, whatever your decision, your school will likely set up a system that supports your choice. After all, you are approaching independent adulthood, and with that increased responsibility comes increased power and decision-making.

There Are Three Distinct Extreme Productivity Types

Cyril Peupion, a Sydney-based productivity expert, has observed extreme productivity among clients at both large and medium-sized companies. Most people who come to me are high performers and very successful. But often, the word they use to describe their work style is unsustainable, and they need help getting it back on track.

Efficiency obsessive. Their desks are super tidy and their pens are probably color-coded. They are the master of inbox zero. But they have lost sight of the big picture, and dont know the difference between efficiency and effectiveness.

Selfishly productive. They are so focused on their own world that if they are asked to do something outside of it, they arent interested. They do have the big picture in mind, but the picture is too much about them.

Quantity-obsessed. They think The more emails I respond to, the more meetings I attend, the more tasks I do, the higher my performance. As a result, they face a real risk of burnout.

Peupion believes that quantity obsessed individuals are the most common type because there is a pervasive belief that more means better at work.

Can My Parents See My Grades For College

  • M.Ed., Higher Education Administration, Harvard University
  • B.A., English and Comparative Literary Studies, Occidental College

For various reasons, many parents of college students think they should be able to see their student’s grades. But wanting to and being legally allowed to are two different situations.

You may not want to show your grades to your parents but they may feel entitled to them anyway. And, surprisingly, your parents may have been told by the university that the college is unable to give out your grades to anyone but you. So what’s the deal?

I know many of you are cringing, but remember that 80 plus years ago a lot of people cringed when others dropped the was and just said what we consider normal: graduated from high school. How To Find Out If Someone Really Has A Phd

People may embellish or include outright lies on a resume to get a job. What Does Date Conferred Mean

2009 Commencement Address

The date your degree was conferred is the date you officially graduated from your degree program this is the date that applications often ask for.

Contrary to popular belief, this isnt the date of your graduation ceremony. Usually, the school needs to do an audit to make sure you meet all your study program requirements before it can legally award you your degree.

These requirements include passing all of your classes on your degree plan sheet, finishing all of your clinical or other fieldwork hours, and paying all of your tuition and fees.

The date your degree is conferred also isnt the day you receive your diploma in the mail, as institutions mail these out and cant guarantee when youll get them.

The actual date usually comes without much recognition, as it is the date the school completes your audit and marks on your transcript that your degree has been awarded.

You can find this date by looking up your official transcript. Many schools provide online access to this, but you can also call the registrars office to check your status.

If you can look at your transcript, it will state if your degree is still in progress, completed, or conferred . If it says conferred or awarded, then congratulations, you have a degree.

How Do You Verify An Applicants College Degree

Whether your company independently performs the degree verification or you decide to utilize a third-party partner to run the education background check, there is some necessary information youll need to collect from the applicant in order to properly verify an applicants educational credentials:

  • The name of your candidate when they attended and graduated from the institution
  • The institutions name and full address
  • The dates they attended
  • The name of their degree they acquired
  • A copy of the physical diploma, certificate, or degree
  • A copy of their transcripts
  • A copy of the signed authorization release

This information would be shared with your background screening provider to use and obtain the education history of your candidate. Universities and other higher institutions provide verification through third-party services. If the institution is registered with a third party service, the degree can be verified quickly and on the same day. This third party assistance is certainly not free as they operate their own business like yours, they charge a fixed rate for access verification. Many providers have partnerships with these organizations to reduce the cost.

If the candidate is female, be sure the information you submit reflects the actual name with which your candidate graduated with, as frequently, female candidates apply for the position under their married names and fail to provide their maiden names.
