The SWAP programme is a full time one year course designed for mature applicants who are returning to higher education after a gap . If you decide you want to become a doctor and have the drive and determination to get through medical school, the SWAP programme can bolster your application for medical school but can also serve as a springboard to get into a pharmacy or biomedical sciences degree course which you could then use to apply as a graduate to a medical degree.Before applying it is worth getting in touch with your prospective medical schools to double check they accept the SWAP course as part of their entry requirements.The course is offered by two colleges in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh and covers science subjects that are applicable to medical sciences as well as helping you to develop study skills that will be vital for studying at university.To apply you are expected to hold some previous qualifications in chemistry and biology and will then usually need to sit an entrance test covering biology, chemistry, and maths, provide a reference, and also attend an interview. What Major Should I Have In College
You can choose any major! There is no specific major for which medical schools are looking. You should pick something that you are really interested in studying for four years, whether it is science-related or not. Keep in mind, however, that whatever major you choose, you will be responsible for completing the required prerequisite courses for medical school. It is not recommended that you major in a specific health profession training program such as Physical Therapy or Nursing these are professional programs that prepare you for a specific profession other than being a doctor.
Get Great Letters Of Recommendation
Post bacc programs can also be helpful for nontraditional students who have lost contact with some of their professors and need med school recommendation letters. Post-bacc recs shouldnt completely replace faculty letters from your undergraduate institution, though. If its been a while, make sure you set up an appointment with your potential recommender so that you can catch them up on your career and medical school goals . I was the first student to study Medicine from my school which was focussed more on vocational subjects such as woodwork and technical drawing. A supportive chemistry teacher suggested that I apply for Cambridge. He gave me some books to study in my spare time for the Cambridge University entrance exam and I was awarded a place. I had no work experience of any sort to back up my application as, unlike now, this was just not available to students like me from working class areas. I simply knew that I wanted to study Medicine and just did my best at the interview! Looking back, I do believe that interview panels then were simply keen to find the best students.
