Use It As A Step Forward

How to be Successful WITHOUT College

Once youve had a chance to process and reflect on your setback, its time to use it as a stepping stone for future success. Think of your life as a progression. Each setback, lesson, and failure are like stairs with each step taking you towards your future. When you face a setback, you can choose: will this setback take me down, or can this setback bring me closer to where I want to be? If you view your setback as a failure and get stuck in what went wrong, it will be. If you view it as a step up, you can move forward.

I also like using the metaphor of a backpack. We spend our lives filling our backpacks with tools, tricks, and strategies for any situation. When you have a setback, you learn and grow and add another tool to your backpack. You are now more skilled and equipped to handle whatever life throws your way. Each setback makes you better at life!

Life doesnt get any easier you get stronger, wiser, and more capable.

Most entrepreneurs live this way. They know that failure takes them one step closer to their success. Salespeople are the same. They understand that each no gets them closer to the next yes. Thomas Edison was famously quoted as saying, I learned 10,000 ways not to invent a lightbulb. He saw every failure as an opportunity to learn.

How You Define Success

Ultimately, it is up to you to determine how you define success for yourself. If you are able to start your own business, continue a family business, or start small in a company and move your way up without a degree, do you consider that success? Or will you always feel the need to have graduated from college no matter your career path? Do some self-reflection on how much a degree matters in your own definition of success for yourself.

There are countless reasons why you really should go to college. One of the most common reasons why students attend college these days is for the opportunity for an increased income and a boost to the resume.

College grads, on average, make much more than those working with only a high-school diploma.

Employers really do look at your education as an important aspect of your resume and many companies wont consider an applicant without a minimum of a bachelors degree. In addition, many companies offer higher entry-level salaries for a college degree. And if you study while you are working, you may be eligible for a salary increase once you graduate.

The easiest reason to go to college: Your career choice. There are just some career paths that necessitate a college degree and there is no getting out of it. Do your homework on the job and career you dream of and check entry requirements, as well as what it takes to move ahead in the field so you know full well if a degree is required.

Earn A Ged Or Other High School Equivalency Credential

For dropouts who don’t have a high school diploma, getting GED certification is often a smart move. GED stands for General Educational Development. It’s a trademark that’s licensed to the GED Testing Service. By passing a series of tests that measure your basic knowledge of math, science, reading, writing, and social studies, you can earn a credential that is often accepted at the same level as a traditional high school diploma.

That’s why a GED is not a bad thing at all. It’s a very popular option.

And when it comes to the educational and employment opportunities you can pursue, a GED is the same as a high school diploma. In the U.S., almost all colleges accept a GED. So you can get your GED and go to college, university, or trade school. The difference between a high school diploma and a GED is that you earn each one by different means. For a diploma, you have to complete a minimum number of required classes. For a GED, you simply have to pass a few tests.

However, keep in mind that some states may not offer GED tests. Instead, they might offer alternative exams that still lead to widely recognized high school equivalency credentials. Examples include the HiSET and TASC exams.

Whichever exam you decide to take, you’ll definitely need to prepare for it. That’s because it will test your knowledge and ability in subjects like math, science, reading, writing, and social studies. But many programs and resources exist that can help you study and practice for it.

Its A Great Idea To Work During College

One of the best things you can do is work during college. A few years ago I wrote an article for Forbes where I surveyed some employers about what matters most. The two key traits that employers most cared about were communication skills and problem solving skills. And they consistently said that graduates who worked during college had the best skillsets.

I completely agree with this assessment. When I would hire recent graduates, there was a huge difference in the communication ability of candidates who worked during college versus those that didnt. Those that worked could communicate much better in a business environment.

Individuals who worked during college also have the potential to earn more after graduation . Being able to show the work history and experience can usually lead to more pay. I know that I would routinely see recent graduates with work experience start about $3,000 higher than those without work experience.

Yes. In fact, some of the most successful people in the world never graduated from high school. And for every famous dropout, many other dropouts exist who quietly lead prosperous and fulfilling lives. Some of the most well-known high school dropouts include:

How To Be Successful In Life Without Good Grades

Imagine the plight of the typical college-bound 18-year-old today.

On one hand, we bombard her with stories and data that show college to be an increasingly poor return on investment. Go to college, spend five years there, and when you graduate — if you graduate — you’ll be rewarded with terrible job opportunities and an ungodly amount of student loan debt. Good luck.

On the other hand, we continue to talk about college as an irreplaceable, golden opportunity. College graduates earn more and get employed more! They have incredible life experiences! So take on that debt, ignore the dire job forecasts, and push on, young explorer — even if you don’t think college is right for you.

Instead of only giving 18-year-olds this Sophie’s choice, let’s give them a third option: self-directed learning.

First, here’s what “self-directed learning” doesn’t mean.

It doesn’t mean becoming the next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. While these dropouts show that it’s fully possible to achieve wild success without traditional schooling, they’re also the outliers.

It isn’t about taking a bunch of free online courses. While EdX, Coursera, and Khan Academy are important innovations, courses are only a fraction of what goes into a higher education.

Instead of following someone else’s curriculum, self-directed learners begin by asking themselves what fascinates and drives them. Their journey begins — and ends — with self-knowledge.
