Just Get Started And Be Flexible

Keeping your options open is recommended and is very helpful. As many successful graduates will tell you, the best-laid plans often give way to more exciting opportunities, and sometimes starting down a path will give you a much clearer idea of what you want to do in the future, even if you end up diverting from that path.

Some individuals who search for reasons to go to college simply suffer from commitment phobia. Dont look at college as a long-term contract that youre not going to be able to get out of once you start. And dont feel like you need to decide on a major area of study before starting college.

College is a time for you to test yourself, explore your interests, see what the possibilities are, and to see what you can achieve. And dont worry, youre not alone. Most other students attending college are going to be in the exact same boat youre in.

There are also a variety of resources, provided by most universities, to help you through college, including academic advisors, professors accessible on campus, tutoring academic support, full-time counseling staff, and more.

While the prospect of attending college may seem daunting, even suffocating, dont forget that you still can live your life and make it an exciting one.

Why Are Large Companies Hiring Without Degrees

According to The Huffington Post, in 2015, Ernst & Young, one of the UKs biggest graduate recruiters, has announced it will be removing the degree classification from its entry criteria, saying there is no evidence success at university correlates with achievement in later life.

Academic qualifications will still be taken into account and indeed remain an important consideration when assessing candidates as a whole, but will no longer act as a barrier to getting a foot in the door,

Maggie Stilwell, Ernst and Youngs managing partner for talent.

Very recently, Job-search site Glassdoor compiled a list of top employers who are expanding their talent options by no longer requiring applicants to have a college degree. Companies like Google, Apple, and IBM are all in this group.

In 2017, IBMs vice president of talent Joanna Daley told CNBC Make It that about 15 percent of her companys U.S. hires dont have a four-year degree.

She said that instead of looking exclusively at candidates who went to college, IBM now looks at candidates who have hands-on experience via a coding boot camp or an industry-related vocational class.

This brings us to the conclusion that as industries transform, jobs are being created that demand new skills which in turn requires new approaches to education, training, and recruiting.

In comparison to a degree, hands-on experience, by far, is the biggest thing now.

Enroll In A Community College

Community colleges are institutes which offer two years of education in basic subjects like history, science, mathematics etc. These colleges offer associate degrees and you can transfer your credit hours earned at community college to university if you wish to pursue further higher education.

Community colleges are way cheaper than universities. According to the 2018 Trends in College Pricing report released by the College Board, the 2018-2019 school year was $35,676 at four-year private colleges, $9,716 for state residents at public colleges and $21,629 for out-of-state students at state schools. On the other hand, community colleges charge about $3,660 on average per year for in-state students. This saves significant money on tuition.

Community colleges have associate degree programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. With some degrees, you can expect to earn more than $50,000,

How to Answer the Essay Question

This can be especially important if you’ll be studying abroad, but all universities require some type of documentation to support your application, such as high school transcripts or documents from any other post-secondary institution you may have attended in the past.

You may also be asked to provide information about any extracurricular or leadership-building activities you’ve participated in. If you know you’re going to be applying to go to college or university, start getting these documents together in advance so you’re not scrambling at the last minute to track down the information you need.

The Financial Benefits Of College Might Be Overstated

The claim that college graduates earn $1 million more in their lifetimes might actually be skewed by graduates from top universities.

A 2019 study by PayScale.com found that there are only six schools at which earning a college degree can get you a $1 million return on investment. Basically, the reported number that college graduates make $1 million more over the course of their professional lives is not that accurate.

Moreover, it’s important to note that while attending college, most people arent working or are only working part-time. So in addition to the financial costs and debts you’re incurring while in college, you probably won’t be able to get the salary you could be making from working a full-time job during the four to six years you’re in school.

How Students Are Faring

There are two parts to the answer of how students are faring. The first is financial and whether or not they can afford to attend school anymore. The second question is how students are handling the frustration of the unknown, including whether classes will be in-person or online, whats happening with tuition, and even whether or not their chosen college can withstand this current financial crisis.

Frustrating Finances

Only a few months after the pandemic first hit, the effects on college students were already being demonstrably felt.

Those are huge numbers. Even 7%, which may sound small, is in actuality very big. In the fall of 2019, there were 19.9 million college students. By the end of the 2019-2020 school year, that 7% drop-out rate translates into 1,393,000 students having dropped out as a result of not being able to afford school due to the pandemic.

The question of students ability to afford an education had been slowly increasing in recent years. Now it has been thrust into the open as a real threat to the accessibility of college for current and future generations.

Are You Going Just Because Others Expect You To

For me, this was one of the biggest reasons why I even thought I had to go to college. Everyone else was. It wasnt even a question.

According to research conducted by Degree Query, 30% of students worldwide go to a four-year university because they think its what theyre supposed to do after high school.

Were told from a young age that college is the path to success. Get a degree. Get a job. Be wildly successful. Right? For some people, its almost a rite of passage to adulthood. Their parents want them to go, or their grandparents do, or they want to go because their friends are or their significant other is.

When I was in school, it was mandatory that we had a line-up of college choices, knew what major we were going into, and were applying for scholarships. Our counselors checked in on us every single week.

The thing is, college is a four-year and multi-thousand dollar commitment. You shouldnt go just because someone else is pressuring you to.

Just because you should isnt a good reason anymore. A college degree does not always result in a job. Consumer Reports asked a number of alumni whether or not they thought they had made the right decision in going to school, and 45% said college wasnt worth the debt. The same study found that almost half of college grads are underemployed.

Can You Make A Good Income Without A College Degree

We touched on the question of success at the beginning of this article, stating that depending on how you define the word, it is entirely possible to live a very successful life without a college degree.

But now lets take that one big step further and ask another question thats more to the point: Can you make a good income without having a college degree?

The answer is a resounding yes. Yes, yes, yes. Start your search for that job by learning the things you should do to get the job and things to do that wont help you at all. Lets start with the latter.

Options For Undecided Students

Dont forget there are plenty of resources available to you as an incoming student. While some are stronger than most, all schools have a student advising department to help you navigate all your options. Set up an appointment with an advisor early in the process. This way, they will have time to get to know you and can offer you the most appropriate guidance.

Taking advantage of online quizzes or assessments that can help match you with majors or schools that pair well with your unique abilities. While these types of tools should be taken with a grain of salt, they can be helpful to get ideas flowing when you are exploring your options.

Another less talked-about option is to take a gap year. If you feel pressured to make a decision about your major to the point that it is causing you distress, a gap year might be a godsend. It doesnt have to mean that you have given up on college altogether, just that you need some extra time between high school graduation and the start of something new. Many students are simply not ready for college right away, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Enter A Trade School Or Certificate Program

Essay On Why I want To Go To College

Many fields dont require a degree at all or at least are available to those who pursue the right educational channelsusually at a lower cost and with a shorter time commitment. For example, if you want to work in the health care sector but are put off by the idea of a lengthy nursing program or medical school, some career options include medical billing specialists, dental assistants and paramedics. Careers in fields like cosmetology or massage therapy are also usually rooted in trade school. Many certificate programs can get you qualifiable skills in under a year.

You’ll Have More Options With A College Degree

You might be planning to enter a trade that doesn’t require a college degree and will provide you with a good salary and benefits. However, if you end up deciding that you don’t like that field after a few years and you don’t have a college degree, your employment options will be limited.

Also, if you take up a trade that requires physical labor and you suffer an injury, you might struggle to find work without a college degree.

Do I Know 100% What Career I Want

There are certain career paths that require you to go to college. They in fact need you to go. For example, if you want to become an engineer, or a doctor or a dentist or a lawyer.

If you are 100% sure what you should pursue as a career and you are willing to spend a minimum of four years in university, this should be a sure path for you.

Switching majors after entering the university is not a good option as it wastes both time and money. But if you have the money to experiment and take a variety of classes until you figure out your major, then sure, do that.

Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Go To College And 4 Things To Do Instead

I got off to a bad start.

It was the fall of 2005. There I was in my college business class. I was so excited. It was day 1. I had a few business endeavors I had been working on outside of the classroom already, and I was super excited to learn about business in the college setting.

My professor introduced herself, she gave us a 10 minute speech about business and entrepreneurship and then she asked us to open our text books where she began going over a few business terms.

Since I was studying business outside of the classroom by building a business, I was puzzled to find that my professor was referencing business terminology that was flat-out incorrect and in some cases totally outdated. I proceeded to raise my hand and correct her. After the first correction she smirked and said, “thanks for clearing that up.” After the second correction, she was noticeably ticked off, and after the third correction, she asked me to leave the classroom.

I was befuddled. I mean afterall, I was paying to be taught about business and I wasn’t going to allow someone to teach me and my peers information that was incorrect.

I just gave you the cold-hard facts about a college education and I supported it with irrefutable data. You now have a choice. You can continue down a path that’s riddled with tremendous uncertainty cloaked in the disguise of opportunity, or you can wake up to the real world that surrounds you and take the path less traveled.

Three Ways To Make Sure Your Why This College Essay Is Doing Its Job

You Dont Need to Go to College

1. Scan your essay for capital letters. Why? Because, chances are, capital letters means youve included something specific that the school offers. In fact…

2. Highlight in bold your reasons for wanting to attend. Ive done this in the Why Johns Hopkins essay above. Notice after doing this if you have just 1-3 items highlighted in bold. If so, you can probably trim in some places to make room for more reasons. This isnt a hard and fast rule, but if youre going for the first or second approach Ive described, then 1-3 reasons per paragraph is a good rule of thumb, whereas if youre going for the third approach you can kind of do whatever: you might choose to go in-depth on one really great reason. But either way

3. Make sure that each time you mention something about the school you connect it back to yourself. How do you know? Simply check each mention of the school and see if youve explained why this is importantnot just in general, but to you.

Finally, just so you can see how a personal statement and Why this College essay can work together, here is:

Do You Have To Go To College To Be Successful

The answer to that question lies in how you define success.

To be successful in general terms, including in a wide variety of careers, the answer is no. You do not need a college degree to be successful.

However, in certain specific fields, you may need a college degree to be eligible for the job you want. Some of these include medicine, law, accountancy, some kinds of engineering, and scientific research.

For the vast majority of professions, however, a degree is not needed. Instead, what people who hire in other professions are looking for is candidates who are good communicators and are capable of building the skills needed to perform the job for which the employer is hiring.

In the latter half of the 20th century, a college degree was viewed as a necessity to getting a job. Employers were looking for job candidates who had completed college. They were looking for people whose higher education had given them the knowledge and experience to do a job well.

Now its almost been reduced to a box that employers just check off as part of the hiring process. Whether or not you went to college is still a question they may ask, but it doesnt mean anywhere near as much as it once did.

A college degree used to open doors for employment a virtual guarantee of a job with a good salary as soon as you graduated. Now landing that job is much more about who you know and what skills you have acquired. Its also how well you interview.
