San Jacinto College: College Launches Cost

San Jacinto College has launched a general studies associate degree pilot program that provides significant cost savings to students who now do not have to buy traditional course materials such as high-cost textbooks.

In lieu of traditional print textbooks that can cost as much as $300 per copy, students who participate in the new program use digital open educational resources course materials which are free and accessible online. San Jacinto College full-time students previously paid approximately $700 per semester for printed textbooks, which amounts to nearly one-third of the total spent on tuition, fees, and textbooks per term.

San Jacinto College is piloting OER courses during the spring 2017 semester and the full OER general studies associate degree program is tentatively scheduled for students with the start of the fall 2017 term.

Some San Jacinto College faculty were already using free OER materials on a limited basis, but the new general studies associate degree program makes exclusive use of OER material as curriculum, which is a first for the college.

The OER concept, informally called open source, is becoming more widespread among colleges and universities around the nation. Free, open source materials have been used by many faculty around the country for some time now, commented Mark Johnson, San Jacinto College North Campus Dean of Business and Technology.

Review For Academic Associate Degree Completion For Students Completing The State

Each academic year, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requires San Jacinto College to report the students who have completed the state-mandated core curriculum, which is approximately two-thirds of the hours required for an associate degree. When the College reports these students as completing the core curriculum, the College will then review the students records to determine if they have also completed all the requirements for an associate degree. If all degree requirements are met, the College will award the students an Associate of Arts degree in General Studies and post the degree to the official transcript. The College will notify the students via the last known email address that the degree has been awarded. The students are eligible to attend the next planned commencement ceremony, and they will receive a graduation diploma.

Earning An Lvn From Accredited Texas Program

For those interested in the healthcare industry, earning an LVN degree is one of the quickest ways to enter a fast-growing field. As the U.S. population ages, the need for licensed vocational nurses increases for hospitals and nursing home facilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects jobs for practical and vocational nurses to grow 9% from 2019 to 2029.

LVN programs focus on the core values of the nursing field: dignity, integrity, altruism, autonomy, and social justice. Over the course of a one-year program, students learn to apply these values to provide safe and quality healthcare as determined by the state board.

According to the BLS, LVNs earn a median annual salary of $47,480. These LVN careers include working in healthcare facilities under the instruction of registered nurses and physicians. Many LVN programs in Texas provide students with access to professional organizations and continued education programs to advance their careers.

    Accreditation For An Lvn Degree

San Jacinto College wins national award for outstanding ...

When choosing an LVN program, check the school’s accreditation. Accredited schools pass quality reviews conducted by third-party organizations. Regionally accredited schools pass review by regional institutions, such as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Schools with regional accreditation are often nonprofit, academically oriented colleges. Credits from these schools typically transfer smoothly to both regionally and nationally accredited schools.

National accreditation often goes to vocational schools or specific programs. Students should research the accreditation status of their desired school and give preference to regionally accredited schools. Learners can check a school’s accreditation using the Department of Education’s searchable database.

LVN programs also seek approval from their state board. Approval from the state board means the program meets the educational requirements to pass the state license exam.
