Navy Student Loan Forgiveness

How the Military Can Pay for College | ROTC Program #shortsclip #usnavy

The Navy Student Loan Repayment Program pays up to $65,000 toward your student loan debt. For sailors to qualify, they must enlist in the delayed entry program as active duty and have an eligible rating.

The Navy will pay 33.3% of your outstanding student loan balance or $1,500 whichever is greater for up to three years of service. However, 25% to 33% of your annual LRP award will be withheld for taxes.

More Sources Of College Aid For Active

In addition to the special programs described above, both active-duty members of the military and veterans are eligible for the same financial aid that any other student is. Those includePell Grants, subsidized and unsubsidized federal student loans, and federal work-study programs.

They also are eligible for numerous state, institutional, and private scholarships, some specifically for current and former members of the military.

To apply for financial aid, prospective students should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid . The FAFSA is used by both the federal government and other student aid providers to determine a student’s eligibility based on their financial resources. For FAFSA purposes, members of the military are considered “independent students,” which means they dont have to supply information about their parents’ finances.

Active-duty military members and veterans are also eligible for special student loan benefits and repayment options that are not available to other borrowers.

Final Thoughts On How The Military Pays For College

The military wants to incentivize people to enlist and one way to do that is by helping to pay for education. The variety of options available show that the U.S. government wants to assist its servicemen and women in paying off their student loans or having them forgiven or discharged whenever possible. Its a small, but significant, way to show gratitude for your service.

Reserve Officers’ Training Corps

 Navy Reserve Pay For College

Founded in 1916, ROTC is a college program offered at more than 1,700 colleges and universities across the United States that prepares young adults to become officers in the Military. In exchange for a partially or fully paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career, ROTC students commit to serve in the Military after graduation .

It’s also possible to do a year or two of ROTC simply for the great leadership experience but without service commitment . The Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force each offer their own ROTC program. The Coast Guard doesn’t offer ROTC, but they do have a College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative scholarship program for college sophomores and juniors.

Officer Track And Enlisted Track

Each branch of the militaryArmy, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guardare organized into Officer and Enlisted service members.

Strictly speaking, Officers outrank Enlisted but the two paths are designed to work side-by-side and each brings different skills and focus.

Enlisted military members do the hands-on work of the military. They often receive specialized training and become technical experts as they progress through their careers.

Senior Enlisted members are responsible for personnel management and mentorship of both Enlisted and Junior Officers.

A 4-year college degree is not required to enlist in the military, although there are numerous opportunities to get a degree once you are serving or after you complete your time obligation.

Military officers lead groups of enlisted and fellow officers, with size and level of responsibility increasing as they become more experienced.

Their training and job performance evaluation focus on leadership and increasingly complex decision-making to impact overall policy and mission direction.

To join as an officer, you must have a 4-year degree. Those in pursuit of a degree may be able to become part of an officer training program while they attend college, such as ROTC.

There are limited opportunities for senior Enlisted members to become Officers or to serve as Warrant Officers, Limited Duty Officers, or in another capacity.

Air Force Student Loan Repayment

Members of the Air Force also have an opportunity to get up to $65,000 in education benefits. The Air Force Judge Advocate Generals Corps Student Loan Repayment program is designed for highly qualified JAG officers who serve in the Air Force and hold a JD degree.

To qualify, you must be an active-duty Air Force officer, be serving a duty commitment of at least four years, and have qualifying federal student loans. You must be current on all your loans and be qualified to serve as a judge advocate. Payments are spread out over three years and begin after your first year of service as a JAG officer.

Army College Loan Repayment

The Army offers student loan repayment for active-duty service members and reservists. You must agree to a minimum three-year enlistment to qualify for active-duty loan repayment. In exchange, the Army will repay up to $65,000 in education debt for you.

If youre enrolling as a reservist, you must enlist for at least six years and have taken out your loans before going on active duty. The Army pays up to $20,000 in loan debt. Loan repayment for active-duty and reservist members is only good for federal student loans, not private.

Does A Persons Ncf Amount Increase

Military Pays For College??

Benefits remain locked in at the amount a service members contract was written for. A service member that enlisted 10 years ago may not receive the same dollar value NCF benefit as someone who enlists tomorrow. This is different than the value of the MGIB program, which does increase annually and is based on the current value of the benefit.

There is a modest level of calculation required to figure out the amount that a serviceperson might qualify for from the Navy College Fund program. Title 38 of the United States Code contains the law that governs the Montgomery GI Bill program and allows each branch of the military to increase the amount of money offered when the individual enters active duty. The amount a service member may receive through the Navy College Fund depends on when he or she entered the Navy.

For example, a service member who joined the Navy between January 1st, 1990, and September 30th, 1990, would receive a kicker of $10,800.00. For a service member who joined after September 30th, 2011, the amount of the kicker is $53,028.00. The kicker has changed every year or every few years to keep up with inflation and general costs for college. There are also some professions in the Navy that have a special rate that is unique from the standard amount offered to select Navy personnel.

Does Failure Require Paying Back Navy College Fund Money

Failing a class in college can feel traumatic, and someone who receives money from the Navy College Fund and their Montgomery GI Bill might wonder whether their failure in a class will cause a problem with their kicker. Fortunately, failing a class doesnt necessarily mean that the student must pay back his or her NCF money or money from the GI Bill.

As long as the student doesnt drop the class and keeps attending classes throughout the semester, the money doesnt need to be repaid. However, if the student decides to drop the class and falls below full-time status at the school, he or she might need to pay back some of the money received for tuition. Sometimes, the best option for the student is to remain in the class and take the failing grade rather than risk dropping to half-time status and having to pay back the money.

One of the benefits of the GI Bill and the Navy College Fund program is that there are opportunities to receive free tutoring where the student will receive money to pay for the tutor as long as the professor agrees that a tutor can help the student pass the class. If there is any chance that the student may pass the class with additional help, it may be beneficial to seek out a tutor rather than drop the class and risk the financial penalty.

Navy Tuition Assistance Coverage

MILITARY PAY | Let’s Talk About My Check

Navy tuition assistance pays for 100% of up-front costs associated with tuition and fees for course enrollments- which is slightly more liberal than the other branches who only pay for direct tuition. Important limits to know are $250 per semester hour or $166.67 per quarter hour with a yearly limit of $3,000, which equals 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours. Total lifetime use for each Sailor enrolled in the program is limited to 120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours. This amount will pay for most community and state programs, including schools located near military bases who adjust their fees to help active duty military members pursue higher education. You will be required to repay your tuition assistance for any undergraduate classes in which you receive a D or below, graduate classes with a grade of C or lower, and any classes that are graded as non-passing or incomplete.

Educational Benefits For Students Who Dont Qualify For The Navy College Fund Program

Not all sailors will qualify for the Navy College Fund, but that doesnt mean that the service member wont qualify for other programs. Some of the programs that people who serve in the Navy may qualify for include the Navy Olmstead Scholar Program, the Graduate Education Voucher Program, the Navy Loan Repayment Program, and the Seaman to Admiral-21 Commissioning Program. These programs are always open to enlisted personnel but may also be available to reservists in the Navy.

Some of these programs will give assistance to future sailors before they officially enlist, and other programs will help students pay back the money theyve already spent on education or programs before they enlisted in the Navy. Some programs will help train sailors during their active military service, like the Advanced Education Voucher Program, which offers post-secondary educational opportunities to senior enlisted sailors.

Who Qualifies For The Ncf

 Navy Reserve Pay For College

Contrary to popular belief, not every service member of the U.S Navy can qualify for the Navy College Fund. Because the NCF is funded only by the U.S. Navy the Navy classifier decides who receives the award rather than the recruiter. In order to be considered for a guarantee of benefits and to receive benefits, the service member must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 17-35 years of age
  • Graduate High School with a diploma
  • Earn an AFQT score of 50+
  • Qualify for training without prior service
  • Have entered active duty after November 21, 1989
  • Sign on to active duty for 3+ years
  • Enroll in MGIB and agree to pay the required pay reductions
  • Receive an Honorable Character of Service.

Sailors who do not qualify for the Navy College Fund may be eligible for the Navy College Program , which is an option that may help the sailor reduce the eventual money they have to pay for college. The Navy College Program allows service members to receive academic credits for training on Active Duty in the Navy. Sailors may be able to substantially reduce their cost of a civilian degree by using their Navy education for transfer credits.
