College is an important part of many peoples lifetime. It is an experience unlike any other one could have, but the important question is, is it important enough to spend all of that time and money?

There are many degrees that have a very high ROI. If the expected income you will make with your career choice is high, and the tuition for your program is affordable, then college will be well worth your while.

However, there are many careers that dont pay well enough to make a degree worth it, and there are many career fields that you can enter without college. So you definitely need to make sure that your expected career is worth the investment.

Overall, college is important because it provides invaluable experiences, you gain important, life-long connections, and you can get further in your career and make a high income with most degrees.

What Should You Consider Before Going To College

Proper research can help you determine whether or not it’s worthwhile to pursue a college degree. Since it’s a large investment, take the time to think through your decision. Here are some things to consider before attending college:

    • Cost: Consider the cost of the college and the program you’re interested in. Determine whether you can pay for your education on your own or if you may need financial assistance from your parents, loans or grants.
    • Job requirements: While not all employers require a college education, many do. Therefore, it’s important to determine the career you want to pursue and research the common requirements for the types of positions you’re interested in.
    • Job opportunities: Consider what your chosen industry may look like in the future. Since industries continue to evolve, it’s important to pursue a degree and field that you think can still offer you employment opportunities once you graduate.

Six Common Mistakes Students Make On The Why This College Essay

Mistake #1: Writing about the school’s size, location, reputation, weather, or ranking.

Why shouldnt you do this? Because that’s what many other students are writing about and you dont want to blend in. Take a hint from Emory University, whose Why us? prompt used to read:

Many students decide to apply to Emory University based on our size, location, reputation, and yes, the weather. Besides these valid reasons as a possible college choice, why is Emory University a particularly good match for you?

Or check out Georgia Techs old prompt:

Beyond rankings, location, and athletics, why are you interested in attending Georgia Tech?

Clearly their admissions readers are tired of reading about those things.

Mistake #2: Simply using emotional language to demonstrate fit.

Telling the school that you walked onto campus and it just felt right is a) something else a lot of students say and b) doesnt the reader understand how are a good match for the school. And, for that matter, neither does the statement, I can see myself rooting for the Wildcats at MetLife Stadium on Sundays.

Mistake #3: Screwing up the mascot, stadium, team colors or names of any important people or places on campus

Why avoid this? It’s the quickest way to show you’re a sloppy researcher. In the example above, the Wildcats play neither at MetLife Stadium nor on Sundays. Also, the I can see myself in is a cliché of the “Why this College” essay. Avoid it too.

Good And Bad Sample Responses To Why This College

The key to writing a strong Why this college essay is specificity. You want to cite opportunities unique to the school that will help you explore your interests and achieve your goals. The most common mistake students make is listing generic characteristics that could apply to any school. This negatively impacts your application, since it sends the message that you didnt do your research, and arent truly interested in the school.

Heres an example of something NOT to list in your Why this college essay. Well take the example of Tufts since we shared the prompt in the beginning.

What NOT to write: Im applying to Tufts because of its low student to faculty ratio, the strong math department, and its prime location in Medford, just a hop away from Boston. When I visited campus, the school already felt like home.

This example is bad because many schools have low student to faculty ratios and strong math departments. There are also a ton of schools in or near Boston, many of which have low student to faculty ratios and great math departments too, such as Boston College, Harvard, Northeastern, Boston University, etc. If your statements can apply to other schools, thats definitely not a good sign. The student also uses an emotional appeal with the line it felt like home, which might sound nice, but it has no substance and can be written for any school. You should definitely avoid making any statements like these.
