The double elimination College World Series bracket ended controversially for NC State, who never got a chance for a comeback after Vanderbilt won the first game of the series. The Wolfpack was removed from the College World Series due to Covid-19 protocols after the team had just 13 players available in game 1, and game 2 was declared a no contest.

On the other side of the bracket, Texas had its sights set on a world class comeback after clawing its way back to the semifinals from the elimination bracket. The Longhorns beat Mississippi State in Game 1 8-5, but Mississippi squeaked by 4-3 in Game 2.

Weather Forecast For Omaha

Unfortunately, Mother Nature might play a role in the series as well. Theres a chance of isolated thunderstorms in the Omaha area Monday night that could delay the proceedings.

NCAA rules prohibit a game from starting after 11 p.m. local time, so expect officials to at least get tonights game underway if possible. The forecast looks better for the remainder of the week.

Women’s College World Series Expanding From 7 Days To 9

OKLAHOMA CITY The NCAAs Division I Competition Oversight Committee has approved expanding the Womens College World Series from seven days to nine, starting with the 2022 event.

The change, announced Wednesday, will eliminate the doubleheader for teams that need to stay alive after losing on the opening day of the event. There also will be a new day of rest for the two teams that advance to the finals.

The previous format limited schedule flexibility. In June, Florida State and Oklahoma State played a game that started at nearly midnight because of a rain delay and didnt end until after 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso and Florida State coach Lonni Alameda, whose teams played for the national championship last season, were among the most outspoken about the need for change, saying the men’s College World Series is more accommodating because it is longer with more off days built in.

Its very uncomfortable when we are talking to our players about standing up for what is right, yet, what is happening around us is not right, Gasso said during last season’s event. And the players will do whatever you put in front of them. Theyre not going to complain. Theyre going to go to bed at three, wake up at seven, because its the World Series. But thats not the memory they need to have.

Committee chair Sandy Atkins said engagement from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association helped identify the most pressing needs.

What Is The Format For The Ncaa Division I Baseball Tournament

College World Series 2018 Beavers

There are four stages of competition for the tournament:

Regionals

The first round sees the 64 teams split into 16 brackets. Each is a double-elimination bracket with four teams, seeded 1-4. Double-elimination means that a team isnt eliminated from the bracket until they lose two games.

Super Regionals

The 16 winners of the regionals move on to the super regionals, where they are split into eight pairings. These pairings play in a best-of-three series.

College World Series

The eight winners of the super regionals head to the CWS in Omaha. They are split into two double-elimination brackets, consisting of four teams each.

College World Series Finals

The winners of the two CWS brackets meet in the CWS Finals, a best-of-three series to decide the NCAA champion.

College World Series Format

The College World Series refers to an eight-team tournament played at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, each year to crown a champion in college baseball. The tournament is double-elimination, single-game series until the final, which is a best-of-three series.

Prior to the College World Series is the Division-I Baseball Tournament. The first round of the tournament is the NCAA Regionals, a group-stage made up of 16 four-team pods. They play a round-robin double-elimination tournament where the top team from each group advances to the next round. The second round, the Super Regionals, is a best-of-three series where the winner advances to the final eight in Omaha.

The top 16 teams in the Division-I Baseball Tournament receive seeds. The rest of the field is unranked officially, and teams carry that ranking throughout the remainder of the postseason. While the seeding is ordered based on the best teams to least, the top 16 seeds arent always those who make the final eight. For example in 2021, unranked NC State upset top-ranked Arkansas in the Super Regionals to advance to the CWS. Similarly, unranked Virginia knocked off #11 Old Dominion in the Regionals and unranked Dallas Baptist dethroned #6 TCU. Virginia advanced to the CWS.

Sports World Reacts To College World Series Decision

The College World Series had some unfortunate news to share this weekend, as N.C. States season has come to an abrupt end.

N.C. State was forced out of the College World Series due to COVID-19 issues. The Wolfpacks opponent, Vanderbilt, advanced straight to the finals.

The NCAA and the committee regret that NC States student-athletes and coaching staff will not be able to continue in the championship in which they earned the right to participate, the statement read. Because of privacy issues, we cannot provide further details.

The NCAA said that the decision to force N.C. State out of the College World Series was made due to recommendations from the medical team and the Douglas County Health Department.

The decision is not without controversy, of course. Many are criticizing the NCAA for ending NC States season while allowing 20,000-plus fans into the stadium each day.

Will Brinson

Others, meanwhile, think N.C. States players have to take responsibility for what happened.

Regardless of how you feel about the protocols in place, NC States players knew the deal. Unvaccinated players were always going to be subject to contact-tracing. There was a way to avoid this. They chose not to do it. Now theyre suffering the consequences.

Gary Parrish

N.C. State is choosing to celebrate anyway, though. The Wolfpack returned home on Saturday and were greeted by their fans.

NC State is a special place.

What Is The Difference Between The Division I Baseball Tournament And The College World Series

The NCAA Division I baseball tournament is a 64-team tournament that starts in late May or early June. After two rounds of play , there are just eight teams left. These eight teams then head to Omaha, Nebraska for the College World Series. The CWS is the culmination of the DI tournament, where the teams compete in two brackets, with the winners of each meeting in the CWS finals, a best-of-three series to decide the NCAA champion.

The Sec Still Lords Over The Sport

Yes, an SEC team has claimed both belt and title once again. We knew that in advance of the finals given that it was an intra-conference affair, but now it’s officially official. As such, let’s quickly take a closer look at the SEC’s recent dominance of the sport. With a corsair’s disregard for the established order, we’re going to wield bullet points under a subhead. As digestible as a rice sandwich is what this content is. Onward:

  • An SEC team has now won seven of the last 12 national championships in baseball.
  • The SEC has placed at least one team in the CWS finals in 12 of the last 13 seasons.
  • The SEC now leads all conferences with 106 College World Series appearances.
  • The SEC’s 13 College World Series titles is a distant second to the Pac-12’s 29. However, the SEC has racked up all their rings since 1990. Over that same span, the Pac-12 has won six College World Series. Stated another way, the Pac-12 won the majority of its national championships in baseball before 1975. In recent years, the SEC’s dominance is unmatched.

With MSU’s triumph, six SEC teams have now won a national title. The others are Florida, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt.

Not surprisingly, the College World Series and TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha are not unaware of a heavy regional presence, and that awareness is reflected by the choices in concessions:

College World Series Begins Saturday In Scaled

Who

The 2021 College World Series begins Saturday at Omahas TD Ameritrade Park, but because of COVID-19 many of the festivities outside the diamond will be curtailed or eliminated this year.

For starters: there will be no Opening Celebration Day and Opening Ceremonies, autograph sessions, open workouts or fireworks at the 2021 College World Series. There will be no formal Fan Fest, although sponsors will be able to set up activities outside the ballparks. And other events like banquets were also scrapped.

But there should be plenty of excitement in the air. Capacity at TD Ameritrade Park will be at 100 percent, and tailgating will be allowed. Watering holes outside the ballpark in downtown Omaha will be open for business. And organizers say there will still be plenty to entertain attendees in addition to the games on the field. From KPVI:

Anthony Holman, managing director of championships and alliances operations for the NCAA, said the decision to eliminate those events happened months ago. By the time it was announced on May 21 that 100% capacity would be allowed at TD Ameritrade Park, the decision couldnt be reversed.

When the timelines for those decisions had to be made, we werent where we are today in this country in terms of allowance for 100% capacity or the infection rates that have drastically declined and the mass distribution of vaccinations, he said.

Understanding College World Series Futures Odds

College World Series futures odds will usually look like this:

  • Vanderbilt +235

  • Texas -120

This means that you would need to bet $120 to win $100 on a Longhorns championship.

Above we have posted the American odds for College World Series futures. However, these are easy to convert to decimal odds or fractional odds with our odds converter tool.

How Bulldogs Commodores Advanced

Mississippi State: The Bulldogs advanced via the winners’ bracket in their half of the Omaha draw, but that doesnt mean the journey was easy. After outlasting Texas 2-1 in their opener, the Bulldogs needed a late rally to beat Virginia 6-5. Texas then picked up an 8-5 win forcing a decisive game on Saturday, but the Bulldogs prevailed 4-3 thanks to Tanner Leggetts walk-off hit in the ninth.

Vanderbilt: The Commodores run in Omaha has been just as dramatic. They scrambled for a 7-6 victory in 12 innings against Arizona, but a 1-0 loss to North Carolina State sent them to the losers bracket. They survived an elimination game against Stanford, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth. Thats when things got even stranger.

COVID protocols forced N.C. State to field a depleted team for its next matchup with the Commodores, and Vandy won 3-1 to force a winner-take-all clash to reach the championship series. Unfortunately, further positive tests forced the Wolfpack out of the tournament altogether, making Saturdays game a no contest and allowing the Commodores to advance.

How Has The Ncaa Division I Baseball Tournament Changed Since Its Inception

The tournament has grown a lot since 1947. There are currently 64 teams that compete in four rounds for the title.

Here are the major changes to the tournament, as they happened:

  • 1948: First-round playoffs were changed to double-elimination.
  • 1949: The final was expanded to a four-team, double-elimination format, and the site changed to Wichita, Kansas.
  • 1950: Site moves to Omaha, Nebraska.
  • 1954: Field expands to 23 teams. The field size bounces around between 21 and 32 for the next two decades. In the 22 years between 1954 and 1975, the field is never the same size two years in a row.

  • 1999: Field expands to the current size of 64 teams, super regionals are added.
  • 2003: CWS finals become a best-of-three series.

The baseball gods have spoken: Let there be a Game 3.

Both Vanderbilt, the defending champs, and Mississippi State, a program vying for its first title, scored a lopsided win during the first two contests. The Commodores struck first with an 8-2 triumph in Game 1, and the Bulldogs resoundingly responded with a 13-2 rout in Game 2.

The stage is now set for a winner-take-all tilt with a national championship on the line. If fans aren’t already at the edge of their seats in Omaha, Nebraska, they’ll get there by the opening pitch.

What: CWS Finals Game 3

Who: Vanderbilt vs. Mississippi State

When: 7 p.m. ET

Breakdown

Games 1 and 2 were defined by offensive eruptions.

Vandy essentially needed one inning to hit its way to a series-opening triumph, plating seven runs before the first frame was finished. Mississippi State unloaded early and often in Game 2, turning 14 hits into 13 runs.

“Big bounce-back game from our guysjust a resilient group,” Bulldogs coach Chris Lemonis told reporters. “We’ve had our back against the wall feels like all year long, and they just keep responding.”

Game 3 could change the script on this series.

Vandy should have co-ace Kumar Rocker ready to go after he pitched six innings on Friday. Mississippi State can counter Will Bednar, who threw 6.1 innings in Saturday’s elimination game against Texas.

Runs will likely come at a premium.

Both pitchers will have baseball futures that go well beyond Wednesday night.
