Students May List Up To 10 Colleges On Their Fafsa

How to Apply for Financial Aid at Temple University

Throughout the entire college decision process, students will have the ability to add and remove colleges from their FAFSA® form, even after theyve signed the application. In most cases, any schools added to an already completed and signed FAFSA® will receive the students application within a week.

In the end, theres not always a right or wrong order in which to file your FAFSA® and submit your applications for enrollment. Some students will fall in love with a school later in the process, and others may need more time to collect all their financial information. The key is to try to get things done sooner rather than later to maximize your financial aid opportunities.

Truthfully, the more colleges you put on your FAFSA® the more financial aid you might get. Why is that? Colleges decide your financial aid package based on factors relating to its student body, your need, budget, and federal allocation. Some colleges might offer you more aid than others, which means you get your choice of the best package.

Put The Pieces Together

It can seem overwhelming to learn about all these financial aid sources all in one place. Plus, it can take a variety of resources to pay for college and every family is different.

However, remember that youve got resources at your disposal. A great place to start is to talk to your college or universitys financial aid office.

File Your Fafsa Correctly

The information you provide on your FAFSA directly determines how much aid you can receive, so according to Randolph, The best way to get the most out of the financial aid process is by providing the biggest, most accurate picture of your financial circumstances on the FAFSA.

On top of simply filing a FAFSA, making sure you do it correctly will smooth the process and could even help you qualify for more aid. Making FAFSA corrections can take time.

Randolph gave her tips for avoiding common FAFSA mistakes:

  • Go through the FAFSA slowly, and dont leave anything blank, she said. If the answer to a question is zero, or it doesnt apply to you, write in 0.
  • Make sure you get your family size right. Dont forget to include the student in the household size, Randolph said. Stepparents information must be on the form, too.
  • The biggest mistake students make is actually forgetting to sign the form, she added. So sign the form!

If this is the first time as a parent or student that you have filed a FAFSA, you might need some extra help and its often out there. Many communities will host free FAFSA workshop days, where professionals will help you through the application, Randolph said.

Lastly, you should never lie or purposely misrepresent any information on the FAFSA. Not only can this jeopardize your chance of getting financial aid, its illegal.

Fafsa Dates And Deadlines

  • You can use tax forms from two years ago to fill out the FAFSA beginning on October 1st.
  • The federal deadline for completing the FAFSA is June 30th, but state and college deadlines are likely to be earlier.
  • For new college students, earlier is often better for filling out the FAFSA since financial aid budgets can become depleted late in the admissions cycle.

The Financial Aid Award Letter

After you’ve been admitted to a college, the school will put together a financial aid award letterif you noted that you want financial aid, that is. You will not have to accept or reject any offer of admission until you’ve been able to go over a school’s financial aid package. You can use the award amounts to calculate your net cost, or what you have to pay out of pocket to attend that school.

If there are loans offered on your financial aid letter, you don’t have to accept any that you’re not comfortable with. You tell your financial aid office what awards you want to take and what awards you don’t.

Calculating Your Net Cost

  • Figure out the school’s CoA . This figure includes tuition, fees, books, transportation, room, and board. If it’s not listed on the financial aid letter, turn to Google or the financial aid office. Learn more about expenses in our guide on what college really costs.
  • Subtract any grants and scholarships listed on the financial aid package from your CoA. This is free money that your school and/or government is awarding you.
  • The figure you have right now is your out-of-pocket cost. If this isn’t affordable, this isn’t necessarily what you have to pay right now to attend this school.
  • Subtract any federal loans offered from the out-of-pocket cost. These loans tend to have low-interest rates and good repayment terms.

Fill Out The Css Profile For Institutional Aid

FAFSA

The CSS Profile is an online application that helps colleges and universities figure out your eligibility for non-federal financial aid. Not every college requires you to fill out the CSS Profile though around 400 colleges and universities do require it.

A few quick facts about the CSS Profile:

  • The CSS Profile costs money. Your first application costs $25, and each school you send the CSS Profile to after that costs $16. You might be able to get a fee waiver if youre a high-need student.
  • You can file as of October 1, 2020. Its a good idea to file the CSS Profile and the FAFSA at the same time.
  • The FAFSA and the CSS Profile are not one and the same they each calculate your assets differently. Filling out the CSS Profile does not take the place of the FAFSA. Rather, it is an additional application for institutional financial aid.

Apply For State Student Aid Programs And School Scholarships

Another reason to submit a FAFSA early is that many state- and school-level aid programs rely on this information to assess need and grant assistance. States also have individual deadlines for when the FAFSA must be submitted in order to be considered for state aid, Randolph said and these are often earlier than FAFSA deadlines.

You should also do your own legwork to find state-sponsored grant or scholarship programs. This State Financial Aid Programs locator tool from the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators is a great place to start.

I Missed The March 2 Deadline Is It Too Late To Apply For Financial Aid

If you are a FAFSA filer, you should definitely still apply! March 2 is only a priority deadline for Cal Grant, as well as priority awarding for additional aid such as Federal Work-Study. You can still apply and qualify for the Federal Pell Grant and California College Promise Grant all academic year long. So, if you miss the March 2 deadline, dont worry! You can still complete the FAFSA to get financial aid. However, if you are a CADA filer, you must file by the March 2 deadline to be considered for Cal Grant only.

  • Youll fill out information based on you and your parents financial information.

  • The colleges you list get your EFC, SAR and FAFSA results and they use that compiled information to calculate your financial aid package.

When Should You Be Applying For Aid Then

Faq Us Friday: How do you apply for financial aid?

So, to review, youve established that FAFSA forms are available and you know the date theyre due. Now that you know the basics, you can discern when you should apply for aid. As a general rule, you wont actually receive any money until youve enrolled at a college. You can apply at any time, even before youve chosen a school. However, funds wont be transferred until youve made it official. Since students have different timelines of receiving acceptance letters, this is where your personal states deadline comes in. If you notice that your deadline is looming and you still havent received a letter of acceptance from your top school, you should fill out your FAFSA as soon as possible regardless.

Applying for financial aid is completely within your control while receiving an acceptance letter in the mail is not. Personally, I prefer to complete the parts of a process I can control as soon as possible. As we figured out earlier, when it comes to federal aid, you do not have to be enrolled in a school to apply for funds. But, you do have to be enrolled to receive the funds. Theres no harm in completing the FAFSA process as early as possible, as long as youre certain of your choice to apply for federal aid.
