There Are Different Application Types And Deadlines Depending On The Colleges You Apply To Discover What Plan Is Best For You
There are different college admission application forms, and each college determines what form it requires. Most applications are electronic and submitted online, but some may allow or require paper submissions.
Know what application forms you will use:
- Common Application: More than 300 colleges across the country participate in the Common Application, an online application system in which the student’s information is entered once and can be sent to multiple colleges. A college using this system may also require completion of a supplemental form specific to that college.
- SUNY: Applications for the State University of New York allow for applying to more than one college within the system.
- CUNY: Applications for the City University of New York allow for applying to more than one college within the system.
- College’s own application: Some colleges have their own application forms. These may be available on their websites or through links emailed to prospective students.
How Long Does It Take To Fill Out A College Application
You may need a month or more to gather the materials needed, like letters of recommendation and transcripts. Once you have all your materials gathered, the basic information on an application can usually be completed in less than an hour.
Writing the essay and personal statement can take a few days up to a few weeks, depending on the content and number of revisions.

If you’re planning to apply this school year, you can start inviting recommenders. If you don’t plan on applying until next school year or later, skip this step for now.
How to invite and assign recommenders:
From the My Colleges tab select a college and open their “Recommenders and FERPA” section.
If you have not done so already, you will need to complete the FERPA Release Authorization.
Invite recommenders using the invite button from each section. You may also use the “Invite Recommenders” button at the top.
Select the type of invitation you would like to send. For each invitation you will need information like their name and email address.
After you add a recommender, you can view their info using the Manage Recommenders button.
Note that teachers, parents, and other recommenders will not receive an email invitation until you assign them to a college. To assign these recommenders, go to their section within this screen. Select their name from the dropdown and use the assign button.
If your high school uses Naviance or another partner software, you will not invite your counselor or teachers here. There will be instructional text on this page explaining what to do next. You will still add other recommenders and advisors using the steps above.

Applying For Early Admissions
Early decision and early action both have a deadline in November and allow you to hear back regarding your admissions decisions in mid-December. If you apply for an early decision, you are committing to attend the college if you are accepted. This is beneficial for students who know they want to attend a specific school. Early action is non-binding and you receive an early decision from the school, but are not required to commit to the college until the normal reply date of May 1. When colleges close their applications, they begin assigning places to students and will aim to have the most people enrolled as they can within their capacity.
This means that they may not be able to accept you if they have filled their places as they dont want to risk becoming oversubscribes for the next year. Because of this, you should really try to apply within the time frame so you dont risk not getting a place.
Some colleges are more lenient with the deadlines and will accept late applicants but I would strongly advise that you aim to complete your application by the date they give you.
The college application window is so large that in most cases you will have a decent length of time to complete them. Leaving it until its too late wont look good to the college youre applying to and also wont guarantee you a place.
Even if you do get into your preferred college after applying late, you may not be accepted onto the courses you want to do as they will prioritise the students who applied on time.
If you go to college in September but decide that you want to change schools, you can sometimes apply to another college. They are unlikely to have applications advertised at this point so you may need to contact them directly to sort this out.
