What To Say To College Coaches

What To Include In Your Text To A College Coach

Calling College Coaches: When to Start and What to Say

Coach April Hall, who has coached volleyball at the NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III level, explains a key part of texting college coaches: Showing your character in texts is more important than stats. The coach is going to look up your stats or ask questions if they want to know. When deciding what to text a college coach, focus on showing the coach you are interested in their school and care about playing for them.

Coach Hall recommends that, when texting college coaches, you start out your text with something about the coach or the coachs team. Show the coach youve done your research and then say something about you. A few ways to kick off your text to a coach:

  • Congratulate them on a recent win
  • Tell them you were impressed by a recent stat you just saw about their program
  • Explain that youre looking forward to watching the team this season
  • Thank the coach for looking at your highlight video, coming to see you compete, etc.

Close out your text with something about you. You can tell them about a big win, or invite them to watch you compete. Here are a few text examples:

Hey Coach, good luck Saturday! Im looking forward to watching the game. Im getting ready for a big game this weekend too! We have been practicing hard this week and are playing better than ever. Thanks, Jane Doe

Hey Coach, Thanks for watching my highlight film!! I have a tournament coming up April 13 . Ill be playing my first game at 1 p.m.. Would love to see you there! Thanks, Jane Doe

How To Market Yourself To College Coaches

For all but the elite athletes, getting recruited requires you to put in the time and effort to promote yourself and make it happen. In other words, you have to market yourself. While marketing is essentially selling, it takes a bit more effort to market yourself successfully to a college coach. And to do that, just follow these steps

Here Is An Introduction Message To Follow:

Hi Coach Smith,

My name is Joe Bloggs, a 2022 graduate from Florida High School in Naples, FL. I am a forward on Florida Soccer Team and I am interested in attending State College because of the schools academic reputation and strong mens soccer team.

On the field, I have been the leading goal scorer for Florida Soccer Team the last three seasons and I have also played varsity for one year for my high school, making the all-conference team this past season. I plan to study Engineering in college and State College has a really strong undergraduate engineering program I am interested in.

Id like to invite you to review my RecruitChute profile which will provide you with my clubs contact information, my academic standing, and my highlight tape.

Do you have any upcoming ID Camps that I would be able to attend on your campus or other events that you will be attending?

Kinds Regards,

Joe Bloggs

Questions To Ask College Coaches About The Recruiting Process

How is your recruiting class looking for my graduation year? Whats the best way to update you on my progress? Are there any camps, combines or showcases youd recommend I go to? Where do you typically evaluate recruits? Are athletes on your team allowed to participate in more than one sport? If I come to your school for an unofficial visit, would you be able to meet with me? How many players for my position will you be recruiting in my graduation year?

Things To Keep In Mind

Thank You Letter to College Coach Beautiful 11 Sample Coach Thank You ...

Dont Ask For A Scholarship: One of the most common mistakes prospects make early on in the recruiting process is asking a coach if they will receive a scholarship. When the coach is ready to breach this subject, they will bring it up on their own.

Keep Your Options Open: It is not a guarantee that every school you reach out to will get back to you. For this reason, it is in your best interest to introduce yourself to as many coaches as possible.

Take Your Time: While you will obviously be excited when you receive your first couple of offers, do your best not to overreact. Just because it was the first offer you received, doesnt mean it is the best fit for you. Take your time and consider each opportunity you have before deciding to commit to a school.

Offense Thrives Off Passing Of Tyler Kolek And Oso Ighodaro

College teams often rely on rigid offensive systems because they don’t have players who can run pro-style sets that call on them to diagnose defenses quickly.

MU boasts two of the best passers in the country in 6-foot-9 center Ighodaro and point guard Tyler Kolek. The players’ ball movement has been contagious, with the Golden Eagles’ assist rate – which measures assists per field goal – of 59.6 sitting at No. 23 in the country.

“You have to have high IQ guys,” Fraschilla said. “Tyler Kolek thinks the game as well as any point guard in college basketball. Its not even close. His passing ability is on par with anyone. To have a guy like that, it would be like having Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. If you put Patrick Mahomes on my Jets, theyre still playing. And with Marquette they have the perfect trigger-man.

“Then Ighodaro, Ive said, will play in the NBA. Honestly, I said that back in early December and now its pretty apparent that this kid, while hes not ready right now and I hope hes patient, hes got some things that definitely translate to the NBA. And hes fun.

Fraschilla participates in coaching clinics around the world, and he often expounds on how to run pick-and-rolls. Fraschilla became an unabashed fan of Kolek’s particular genius after watching MU last season.

“He can dissect all five defenders in the pick and roll,” Fraschilla said. “Very few college kids can do that. Chris Paul does it . Kyle Lowry does it. Those guys have played a long time.”

On Fletcher Loyer’s Performance In The Second Half

Painter: Yeah, Fletcher is obviously a good player. And anytime he struggles in the first half this year, he plays great in the second half. And he really didnt struggle in the first half, he just got into foul trouble, so he didnt play as much. But hes very aggressive, very sure of himself. Can catch-and-shoot threes, can shoot off the dribble, and can get to the basket. Hes very deceiving when he handles the basketball, but he does a good job of getting angles and being aggressive. Hes not scared of the moment.

What To Say During A Call With A College Coach

It can be intimidating to figure out what to say during a call with a college coach. Here are some ways you can approach the call to leave a good impression on the coach.

Introducing Yourself: Start by introducing yourself to the coach, including your name, high school and position that you play. You can reference your previous emails with your athletic stats and highlight video so that the coach knows who you are.

Why Youre Interested In The School: Next, be sure to tell the coach that youre interested in playing for the school. If you can make a personal connection or mention specific things you like about the school, be sure to do that. The more you know about the school, the better impression you will make on the coach. You also should know the coachs name and background before making the call.

Next Steps: Before ending the call, you should leave the coach with something they can do to find out more about you. Give them your phone number and let them know if youll be playing at a tournament soon. Thank the coach for their time, and feel free to send them an email with any details you mentioned during the call after.

When And What To Communicate To College Coaches

What to Say When Emailing a College Coach to Get Their Attention

Student-athletes can contact college coaches at any time, but coaches must adhere to the rules laid out in the NCAAs recruiting calendars. Because coaches are limited to when they can reach out to student-athletes, they like it when recruits initiate conversation. Its important to keep in mind, however, that just because you can reach out to a coach doesnt mean you always should. Being persistent in your communications without over-stepping can be challenging, but doable.

There are two important things to keep in mind when thinking about when and how to follow up with a college coach. Make sure your communications provide value and are consistent.

  • Provide value. Every coach communication should have a purpose for why you are reaching out. You shouldnt just pick up the phone, or shoot off a text message, without a reason. Instead, find ways to strategically reach out to coaches and provide information that will improve your chances of being recruited.
  • Be consistent. This is where student-athletes who are organized in their recruiting will stand out. You want to communicate with coaches at a consistent pace. Keep track of when, where and how you are reaching out to college coaches. And do the same for when coaches reach out to you! Be sure to pay close attention to how often you are reaching out to coaches without hearing anything back in return. You dont want to risk annoying coaches with peppering communications.

This Is Why Coaches Delete Your Email

Let me be honest, coaches immediately delete any mass email they receive from you or your recruiting service. Coaches receive hundreds of emails. They do not have the time or desire to deal with an email from an athlete that was sent to a hundred other coaches as well. Instead, college coaches focus their time on athletes who they believe are interested in their school and program.

For example, at my last college position, we had a few pretty rough seasons where we only won a couple of games. I received many emails in which potential recruits would say they wanted to be part of our Amazing or Successful program. I deleted those emails straight away. However, the ones I kept said, I saw you only won 3 games last year. I want to come in and help you turn that around.

#initiating Contact With A College Coach

When youre ready to begin reaching out to college coaches, be sure to always have an intention or purpose. Once youve made initial contact youll want to continue to follow up with the coach to build a solid relationship and let them know youre still interested in playing for them.

Here are some examples of when you might consider reaching back out:

  • Inform them of an upcoming tournament, showcase or event youre attending
  • When you are visiting campus
  • A few days before your official campus visit

Be sure to contact every college coach on your potential school list. Whether theyre a reach school, a school youre excited about or one youre not so familiar withits always worth it to cast a wide net and get your name and video in front of them.

Why Emailing A College Coach Is Important

Do I really need to email a college coach?

Yes, we advise that you do. As mentioned earlier, the majority of the time, players are the ones who initiate the college recruiting process.

The collegiate recruitment process varies across different levels and organizations, and contacting a college coach may move you forward in the recruitment process.

EXACT has contacted several D1, D2, and D3 college coaches for feedback on the recruitment processes. In our years of interaction with these professionals, we’ve learned that the best way to make first contact with a college coach is by emailing them. You can then send follow-up emails and/or make phone calls once you establish a rapport with that college coach.

How Does Texting Work In Recruiting

Texting college coaches is a great way to build relationships and get to know a coach in a more informal setting. Usually, texting will start further along in the recruiting process, after the first or second email, and often after your first call with the coach. College coaches dont give out their phone number to every recruit, so take that as a good sign you are getting recruited by that coach.

While texting college coaches may be a convenientand more casualway to interact, a few misplaced texts could damage your prospects. That being said, student-athletes should take the time to learn how to text a college coach and how to respond. Even though youve progressed far enough in your recruiting to get to this point, you are still a recruit, and the coach is still evaluating you. When it comes to what to text a college coach, dont be lazy and if youre not sure a text is appropriate, ask your current coach or parents to give a read before you send it.

How to Email a College Coach for Recruiting [Insider Tips]

The final component of your email is giving the coach a way to see your game moments, alongside tournaments, showcases and ID camps where they might be able to catch you in person. Keep in mind that most coaches will not have the time or bandwidth to watch entire games, so you should provide a more accessible way to see you in action.

If youre using Trace iD, this is where youll drop the link to your iD along with some instructions on how they can see and explore your moments. With Trace iD, the coach can quickly jump into the full game from any moment to provide even more context of your play. Theyll see up-to-date stats across all of your matches. And anytime you add a new moment to your iD, the coach will have access to that immediately. Check out this sample Trace iD, created by a Trace athlete from FC Dallas who recently committed to Clemson.

If youre not using Trace iD, youll want to attach some game film. We have a few dos to get recruited for college soccer through game film.

Example:

My team will be attending ECNL Vegas from March 12-14, and Ive included our schedule here. I have included the link to my Trace iD . My team uses Trace to automatically film and edit our games, and Ive included some of the moments that I feel best represent me as a player in my Trace iD. Feel free to click the jump to full game option to watch a larger portion of that game or head to my matches tab to check out my most recent 5 games.
