Who Is Required To Meet The Ability To Benefit Testing Requirement For Ny State Aid Eligibility
All New York State residents who have a foreign high school diploma are required to meet the New York State ATB standards to be eligible for TAP and NY State Aid. Students are required to meet the scores listed on the following ATB test modules:
- Reading: a score of 233 or higher
- Writing: a score of 235 or higher
- Arithmetic: a score of 230 or higher

What Are Cunys Proficiency Requirements
Students can demonstrate that they meet the Universitys proficiency requirements in English and Math based on their SAT, ACT, or NY State Regents test scores:
English
Students may meet the proficiency requirement in English by documenting any one of the following:
- SAT I Verbal score of 480 or higher or SAT Critical Reading score of 480 or higher or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section score of 480 or higher
- ACT English score of 20 or higher
- NY State English Regents score of 75 or higher
Mathematics
Students may meet the proficiency requirement in mathematics by documenting any one of the following:
- SAT Math score of 500 or higher
- SAT Math Section , score of 530 or higher
- ACT Math score of 21 or higher
- NY State Regents:
- Common Core Regents: Score of 70 or higher in Algebra I or a score of 70 or higher in Geometry or a score of 65 or higher in Algebra 2.
- Score of 80 or higher in Integrated Algebra or Geometry or Algebra 2/Trigonometry AND successful completion of the Algebra 2/Trigonometry or higher-level course.
- Score of 75 or higher in one of the following:
- Math A or Math B
- Sequential II or Sequential III
CUNYs Proficiency Index
Students who do not achieve the required scores on SAT, ACT, or New York State Regents Exams can satisfy the proficiency requirements with:
- an English proficiency index score of 65 or higher
- a math proficiency index score of 60 or higher

Faq: Your Free Career Test
Question: Is this resource test useful for students as well as adults?
Answer: The free career tests in this resource are useful for students and adults for career exploration. School districts, colleges, and workforce centers use this with their students and clients for career research. The content is written at an 8th-grade level when possible and is most easily understood by students that are at least 13 years of age and older. Some schools do use this as a resource with students that are younger than 13 to get them interested in STEM careers. However, younger students that are not in high school yet should be supervised when taking any of the tests so any questions can be explained if necessary. Also, some careers are more technical than others and younger students may find the terminology a bit more difficult to understand, especially in the job description.
Question: How much time does it take to complete the free career tests?
Answer: They are designed to take no more than five minutes to eliminate test fatigue. Some free career tests can be completed in as little as two or three minutes. Our flagship free career test is our most popular and may take the full 5 minutes for an adult or student to complete. Top 7 Entrance Exams And College Tests
The main college entrance exams are the ACT and the SAT. The CLT is a newer alternative that is accepted by a small number of colleges. Colleges and universities, especially highly selective schools, may also require SAT Subject Tests. International students may be required to include a TOEFL score in their application to U.S. based schools.
Look Beyond The Books
Don’t just follow your academic interests, but also look at the other aspects of your life, advises Neha Gupta, author of The Four Year Plan. Gupta advises students who are undecided on a degree to ask themselves a number of questions, like How do I like to interact with people? How do I best learn? Which lifestyle works best with me?
Each major has a culture surrounding it and it’s important that you’re surrounded by professors and peers who youre excited to work with and learn from, Gupta says.
Looking beyond the books also means understanding which industries or careers a degree might lead to. Hill advises gaining experience and exposure to a potential field of work by volunteering and connecting with professionals within your area of interest. Knowing what the industry is like will give you an idea of which degree will work for you.

How To Choose A College Major
During the summer between junior and senior year, in between avoiding thinking about colleges and trying to get my summer homework done, I took some time to think about how much I’d explored each of the subjects I was interested in so far and how much it should affect my college search.
Below, I’ve written out roughly what my thought process was for each subject. As you read through, you’ll start to notice that even though I am interested in all five of the subjects, the degree to which I’m interested in each area varies quite a bit.
Prepare For The Next Exam
A failed exam can feel like a big blow. It can even cause test anxiety for the next exam. But try to stay focused on the ultimate goal: mastering the material and earning your degree.
Instead of wallowing, prepare for the next midterm or final. Implement the new study techniques you learned in office hours or gained by dissecting your previous exam.
Set aside more time to prepare for the exam and attend any review sessions your professor offers. Professors often drop hints about the material that will show up on the test during review sessions.
Focusing on the next exam shifts your attention from an area in which you have no control the failing grade on your last exam to an area in which you do have control: your score on the next test. Emphasizing improvement can also help rebuild your confidence.

My Academic Background And High School Interests
For high school, I attended a good public school in the New York suburbs. Most of the students from my school, then and now, go on to attend 4-year colleges immediately after high school.
Because I went to a high school where most students went to college and because my parents had both gone to college and expected their children to as well, I was encouraged to start thinking about where I’d want to attend college during eleventh grade.
Growing up where I did also meant I was familiar with at least the names of a lot of Northeastern U.S. colleges , but I did not really have a sense of what schools were strong in which areas.
As a high school junior, I would likely have described myself as being extremely interested in the following college majors: creative writing, Chinese, music, neuroscience , math, or something else I hadn’t studied yet but might discover a passion for in college.
For me, a perennially curious student, the question was less “what should I go to college for” than “what should I base what colleges I apply to on.” Figuring out the answer to the question “what should I go to school for?” was particularly difficult for me since none of my interests seemed to mesh together well, at least not on a surface level.
Case in point for me: going into junior year, I wasn’t super into U.S. History , but since we had to take it in 11th grade either way, I knew that it would be better if I took AP U.S. History than regular U.S. History.

Take the PERT if you have not taken the SAT or ACT, or you do not have qualifying scores. Regardless of your intended program, you must complete all sections of the exam. Please visit our high school programs webpage for information on individual program requirements
TAKING THE PERT
- You may opt to take the PERT remotely, with online Honorlock proctoring, or sign up to take it on-campus.
- You may take the PERT two times per Pinellas County semester, once over the summer. There is a $15 fee for second attempts. Additional attempts may disqualify you from consideration.
- You should plan to test early to meet the program deadlines and to determine whether youll need retest.
REMOTE TESTING
If you opt to take the PERT remotely, a Testing Center staff member will reach out to you after you submit your request. You will be able to test in approximately ~5 business days after staff have set up your PERT account. Plan accordingly.

How Do I Get Started
Faculty, staff and students who have not uploaded proof of full vaccination into CUNYfirst or students with approved religious exceptions or medical exemptions will receive an email from Cleared4.org on behalf of CUNY to enroll in the testing program. Enrollees should read and approve the testing consent and validate their personal information.
Be advised that enrollees will not receive their test results from the Cleared4 testing sites unless they have included their email address, telephone number & date of birth information in their profile.
How To Prepare For College Entrance Exams
If you are in high school, it is not too early to start preparing. By junior year, you should have a good idea how to prepare for college and how to choose a college. The first step to prepare for a college entrance exam is to choose which exam you are going to take.
Most students find that if they take an ACT practice exam and an SAT practice exam , score them, and compare the scores, there is a clear choice for which exam is a better fit. If you score about the same on each practice exam, ask yourself if you prefer one test over the other and focus on the test you like best. Alternatively, if you took the PSAT exam, and also a preACT exam or ACT Aspire, you can use your test scores from these practice tests to help you choose which college entrance exam is best for you.
Although the best preparation for a college entrance exam is to take challenging high school classes and apply yourself to your schoolwork, it is also helpful to prepare for your ACT or SAT using a test prep program. You can pay a lot of money for the expertise of a tutor or test prep center, and the benefit of the individual expert help will maximize your time spent on test preparation.
There are more affordable ways to study for your entrance exam. You can buy an official test prep book from ACT or SAT. The book will include practice problems and test-taking tips to help you review your knowledge, learn important rules and common types of questions, and help manage your time on exam day.

Cut Out The Distractions
Distractions make it difficult to pay attention to what youre doing, which in turn makes it harder to commit facts to memory. Give yourself a leg up by turning off the notifications on your phone, temporarily blocking your favorite websites, or sticking to instrumental music while you study . Taking a break every 45 minutes or so will also help you stay focused.
How Often Do I Have To Test
Unvaccinated employees who choose not to share their vaccination status, as well as students with approved religious exceptions or medical exemptions have to test every seven days if they are on campus or in the office weekly. Otherwise, they are responsible for making sure that before they go to a campus or office they test within the previous seven days.

Im Not Vaccinated Do I Need To Get Tested
Anyone entering a CUNY facility for any reason will need to be fully vaccinated or have proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken at a CUNY testing sitewithin the past seven days. By January 18, all students need to have been fully vaccinated and their vaccination documents approved, except students with an approved medical exemption or religious exception.
I Am Taking Only Online Classes This Semester Do I Need To Upload Proof Of Vaccination Or Register For The Testing Program
All students taking remote only classes who wish to visit a campus for any reason must be fully vaccinated and have their vaccination documents approved in CUNYfirst unless they have been granted a religious exception or a medical exemption. The only other exception is that campus leaders can accommodate entry to students who need to access emergency services on campus, such as food pantries and mental health services. This policy may be modified depending on changing public health conditions.

How Do Proficiency Requirements Affect Admission To Cuny For Transfer Students
Transfer Students From Outside CUNY
- Students with a 3-credit college-level English course with a grade of C or better from an accredited college or university have satisfied the proficiency requirement in English.
- Students with a 3-credit college-level math course with a grade of C or better from an accredited college or university have satisfied the proficiency requirement in math.
