Earning Your Bachelors Degree In Psychology

The 10 BEST Schools for Psychology Majors

By now you might be thinking that the only reason to earn a bachelors degree in psychology is to lay the foundation for a master’s degree, and eventually a doctorate. Many believe there are limits to what you can do with a bachelor’s alone, but those people dont know the whole story.

Psychology is consistently counted among the most popular majors for bachelor’s students. It’s true that many go on to complete master’s degrees so they can work as counselors and therapists. Others go on to earn terminal doctorates en route to becoming full authority licensed clinical psychologists. But many others also transition directly to the workforce and find what they learned to be very useful and relevant to the work they do in other fields.

The Condition of Education 2020: Undergraduate Degree report published by the National Center for Education Statistics shows psychology to be the sixth most common undergraduate major in the U.S., with more 116,000 graduates earning a bachelor’s in psychology in 2019. That popularity tells you that a bachelor’s in psychology has applications beyond strictly psychological practice.

It also means that almost every major institution in the country offers a psychology program taught by experienced and talented instructors.

Master’s Degree In Psychology

A master’s degree in psychology is a graduate-level degree that usually takes between two and three years beyond the bachelor’s degree to complete. Like the bachelor’s degree, students can usually choose between a Master of Arts or Master of Science in psychology.

Jobs at the master’s level are far more plentiful than those at the bachelor’s level, which is why this is one of the most popular degree options. While some master’s programs offer what is known as a terminal degree, or an end-level degree designed to prepare students for the workforce, other master’s programs focus on preparing students for doctoral-level study.

Graduates with a master’s degree can find jobs in a variety of areas, including mental health services, government agencies, and business fields. While there are some opportunities for teaching at colleges and universities, these positions tend to be limited and highly competitive. A few job titles that a master’s degree holder might find include marriage and family therapist, rehabilitative counselor, school counselor, and human resources manager.

Structuralism And Functionalism: Early Schools Of Thought

Structuralism is widely regarded as the first school of thought in psychology. This outlook focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components. Major thinkers associated with structuralism include Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Titchener. The focus of structuralism was on reducing mental processes down into their most basic elements. The structuralists used techniques such as introspection to analyze the inner processes of the human mind.

Functionalism formed as a reaction to the theories of the structuralist school of thought and was heavily influenced by the work of William James. It functioned on the mind’s functions and adaptations. Unlike some of the other well-known schools of thought in psychology, functionalism is not associated with a single dominant theorist. Instead, there are some different functionalist thinkers associated with this outlook including John Dewey, James Rowland Angell, and Harvey Carr.

Instead of focusing on the mental processes themselves, functionalist thinkers were instead interested in the role that these processes play.

Are Psychology Programs In High Demand

Psychologists are required to earn college degrees. Psychologists with masters degrees and doctorates are able to counsel clients and carry out research into this field of science, whereas those with a lower-level degree can only work as psychiatric technicians or, sometimes, as addiction support counselors.

The employment of psychologists has been predicted to grow 3% between 2019 and 2029, which is about the same rate as for all other occupations, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics . For those who have earned a doctorate in an applied specialty, the likelihood of finding a job in this field is the highest.

The demand for psychologists should grow due to increased demand for psychological services in settings such as social service agencies, hospitals, schools, and mental health centers. Veterans returning from deployments are also expected to need psychological services as they may be suffering from mental trauma caused during their deployments, and the military has been taking this need more seriously in recent years.

Industrial-organizational psychologists will be in continued demand to select the best employees, increase the efficiency and productivity of the organization and improve office morale. The fastest-growing roles in psychology include psychologist, substance abuse counselor, mental health and behavioral disorder counselor, training and development specialist, marriage and family counselor, and, in a related field, social worker.

What Can You Do With A Psychology Degree

There are various degree options for psychology majors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. To become a practicing psychologist who works with patients, you will generally need to earn a doctoral degree and obtain a license in your state, though some states allow individuals with masters degrees to provide limited psychological services. This is only one of the many career options available to individuals with psychology degrees, however. Some psychology graduates work in other types of positions within the field, such as research or teaching, while some are employed in other sectors where psychological knowledge is applicable. One of the many reasons why psychology is a popular undergraduate degree is because it produces well-rounded, analytical students who are able to work in a variety of fields that require a comprehensive understanding of human behavior like social services, management, administration, marketing, sales, social work, and more.

My Journey In Mcmaster University

online college,online degree,online school,online ...

I got to know about this university, when I was in 11th grade, from one of my teachers in school. At that time, her daughter was pursuing her graduation from here. When I showed my interest in pursuing my higher education in Canada, she told me about the preparation and process of getting admission. In order to improve my language aspects, I joined coaching in Delhi. Apart from that, I started participating in several group discussion activities in my school and online social media platforms. In a matter of one year, I bolstered my language aspects to meet the eligibility criteria. When it comes to the admission process, It started with my online application. I applied through the OUAC 105 portal and it cost me worth $190. Along with my application, I had to submit all the required official transcripts, i.e. 2 letters of recommendation from my teachers, an essay on my profile, my official academic transcripts, and an updated resume, via mail. I got further updates regarding my application after five weeks. Thereafter, I received a mail mentioning my offer letter and got intimations of further events in the same. Soon I applied for my study VISA and the application cost me worth $110. The documents asked for during my VISA process were my acceptance letter, study plan, passport, and financial evidence. Apart from these, I had to provide my health insurance fee and my accommodation fee of one semester in advance before entering college.
