What Clothes To Bring To College

Don't Miss

Why You Should Get Dressed For Class

CLOTHES YOU SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT BRING TO COLLEGE | college clothing essentials packing list

Were not saying that you should spend 5 hours getting ready every morning or that fashion should be more important than anything else. But we do think that looking nice is important.

Here are some reasons why you SHOULD get dressed up for class even if that just means jeans and a tee or some cute joggers and a fashion sneaker.

Showing respect for your professor

Showing up to class in your pajamas not only makes you look like you dont care, but its also disrespectful to your professor. They dress nicely for class to show that they take their job seriously. When you dress like youre ready to fall asleep, it says that you could not care less. This is disrespectful to your prof.

Making it easier to focus

We dont know about all of you, but we dont feel very productive when were wearing PJs. Pajamas are good for a few things sleeping, watching TV, and lounging around. When youre dressed a little nicer, youre not going to be tempted to fall back asleep or space out during lecture.

Looking good

Okay, this is an obvious reason not to wear the clothes you slept in. PJs arent always the cutest. We love our oversized sorority graphic tees and sweat shorts for wearing around the dorm, to the gym, or even to a final if weve been up all night studying but never for a day of classes.

If you love fashion, you should wear your fabulous clothes! Wear something unique and have fun with fashion. Why bother having amazing clothes if you arent going to wear them?

Dont Bring Every Halloween Costume You Own

This isnt something I did, but I had a couple friends that literally brought an entire suitcase filled with halloween costumes. And at the end, they just wore a couple of them or ended up getting a new one. Dont bring every old costume you have. Ultimately, you can always buy something cheap on amazon or just make your own costume.

Do Keep Your Hanging Clothes On Their Hangers

Theres no need to waste time taking clothes off hangers, folding them and packing them, and then rehanging them once youre at school. Instead, group together hanging items and slip a large garbage bag over them, starting from the bottom. Secure the bag by closing it shut over the necks of the hangers. As an alternative, you could also hang them in a wardrobe box.

Going Out Outfits For College

Next, lets talk about what to wear when you go out. Whether youre heading to a party or dinner with your roommate, sometimes you want to dress up a bit. Here are my recommendations:

  • 1 Fancy dress Even if you have no plans, bring a nice dress. A good choice is a cocktail dress. You never know if youll be invited to an upscale event, so being prepared is key.
  • 2 Nice pants Nice pants might be an elevated pair of jeans or trendy slacks. Either way, make sure theyre something you can get a lot of wear out of.
  • 3 Nice tops You have a lot of options here. You might pick your favorite button-down, a crop top, or even just a cute blouse. Make sure its something you wear a lot!
  • 1 Blazer Last but not least, a blazer is important if you find yourself needing a professional outfit for a job fair, meeting, or interview.

Flip Flops & Shower Shoes:

I brought one pair of flip flops to college which was perfect for me. If you are going to school somewhere warmer and will get more use out of flip flops pack a couple of pairs!

You can also use flip flops as shower shoes, which is what I did . I used Old Navys cheap flip flops for this.

How Should I Pack My Clothes For College

clothes you NEED to bring to college (and what to leave at home)!! + wardrobe layering essentials

Its best to settle for enough clothing to get through one or two seasons at a time. When returning home for winter break or another occasion as the season changes, you can take some clothes back and exchange them for others. You may want to consider bringing some formal wear in the event of a job fair, networking opportunity, or a job interview. You can also start by packing some neutral-colored clothes to make coordination easier. If you exercise or use a gym, dont forget to bring some workout clothes.

Pro Tip:

If you know how to sew, bringing a small sewing kit can help you patch up clothes in an emergency.

Another way to make unpacking easier is to leave all your clothes on their hangers when youre packing. Once youre in your room, you will be able to simply remove them from the box and hang them in your closet. This also means you dont have to put hangers separately on your college packing list! If you dont have boxes that are big enough to hold your clothes and their hangers, you can use a large bag such as a garbage bag, with the hanger hooks poking out of the top. Using bags to carry clothing may also be best to keep dress shirts and slacks from creasing.

Think Seasonally Not Annually

Think about the weather and when you’ll be seeing your family next. You can always bring summer/fall stuff and then do a clothes swap for winter when you come home a few weeks after classes start, over Thanksgiving or for the holidays. If you really want to bring everything you wear but don’t want to worry about bringing everything you own, focus on what you’ll wear over the next 6-8 weeks. At that point, you will be better able to gauge what you’ll want/need/have space for and possibly do a swap as the weather cools down.

Dont Bring Your Entire Closet With You

I guess I kind of get separation anxiety when I dont have all my clothes with me. Even though, I had a lot of clothes to mix & match and lots of different outfits, bringing my whole closet with me was a HUGE mistake. And while it didnt feel like a mistake at first, because my dorm was big enough for all of my clothes to fit, moving out was really hard. Not to mention there were some clothes I never wore. So, please dont make the same mistake as me, and dont take your whole closet with you off to college. Just take with you what you know youll be wearing.

Also, remember that you can go home and pick up more clothes during breaks.

If Youre On A Tight Budget

A solid winter coat and a nice pair of waterproof boots can really add up. If youre on a budget, there are always cheaper options of everything available, and you dont need the most expensive option to get a choice that lasts. However, dont go for the very cheapest, as youll save more money in the long run with one good pair than if you ended up needing to replace a cheap pair of boots every year.

I asked a close friend of mine what she did when moving to New England from a warmer climate while on a budget. She said, I bought the cheapest options within what was new, but I basically decided that those two items were the most important and were worth spending on because I also realized that was the coat Id be wearing every day for months for 4 years.

If youre having trouble getting together the money, you could ask for multiple people to pitch in as a birthday or early winter gift for you. If thats impractical, Goodwill and other second hand stores in the area where youll be attending school will probably have options appropriate for the weather there. My school also had something called the Student Aid Society, where students could donate unwanted clothing to each other. If your school has something similar, see if they have any winter gear available in your size.

What To Bring To College: The Importance Of Organization

Clothes to Bring to College: 10 Pieces You Need to Pack ...

Before we introduce our ultimate college packing list, it’s critical that you understand the overall importance of organization regarding what to bring to college.

You’ll notice the word storage on our college packing list that’s because living in a small space means it’s more important than ever to stay organized.

You can start your organizational system before you even move. Start by labeling all the boxes or storage containers you’re bringing with you to college. Label makers are great, but duct tape and a sharpie work just fine as well. You don’t want to be searching for your charger on your first night in your dorm because you can’t remember which box you threw it in.

One-up this strategy by packing your dorm items as they’ll be stored once in your room. If you have a bedside rolling cart, for example, put the items in that cart that will be there once you move in. You’ll save yourself a bit of unpacking and know exactly where your stuff is when you need it.

Some things that are college-specific can be packed in advance, but you’ll probably wait to decide what clothes to bring with you. Packing your clothes last is actually a great idea. Make a day of it! Chances are that you can stand to donate some items, and you’ll have to decide carefully what to bring to college and your dorm. Clothes will also be the last thing you unpack once you’re moved in, since you’ll want to take some time to organize.

College Clothes Packing List: Must

I polled a group of 40 college students and bloggers to ask for their opinions on the must haves to pack for a college in their area. Of the Northeastern responders, 75% said rain and snow boots! With the amount of rain and snow that the Northeast gets, its important to make sure your feet are outfitted for the cold and the changes in weather.

I personally attended college in the Northeast, and for me the best option was a duck boot, which can withstand both rain and snow. Though they may seem pricey, youre saving on the cost of a second pair of rain or snow boots by getting a pair that can handle both!

Other responders emphasized how important it is to have a versatile and layered jacket. I cant agree more! I got a two-layered coat so I could wear just the inner shell in the fall, the outer shell when it rained, and both together for cold weather. Again, theyre pricey but theyll last you all four years .

Other essentials for me included general outdoor weather gear: gloves , a hat and scarf, and warm socks. The winters are famously frigid in New England, so be sure you come prepared especially if you come from somewhere warm!

Keep in mind, too, that you should err on the side of not bringing too much instead of overdoing it. Once you get to campus, chances are you’ll sport for a new sweatshirt when they’re on sale in the bookstore, go shopping around town with some friends one weekend, end up with tons of t-shirts from events or clubs on campus, and even swap clothes with other people in your residence hall.

Clothes have a tendency of multiplying suddenly on college campuses, so as long as you have some basics with you when you arrive you should be set.
