The University Of Iowa Residence Requirement

Credit hours earned in all courses offered by The University of Iowa are considered UI residence hours, regardless of whether the courses are offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, by another college within the University of Iowa, or through Distance and Online Education.

Credit hours earned from colleges and universities outside of the University of Iowa are considered non-residence credit.

To earn a bachelors degree from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, you must complete one of the following UI residence options:

• Earn your final 30 s.h. in residence credit, or
• Earn 45 of your final 60 s.h. in residence credit, or
• Earn an overall total of 90 s.h. in residence credit

College Graduates Lacking Important Skills

However, the glaring lack of information gained from taking college-level core classes is evident. A Payscale survey asked managers to identify the skills that they thought college grads lack the most. Among the responses, writing skills are identified as the top skill missing in action among college grads. Public speaking skills are in second place. But both of these skills could be developed if students were required to take core courses.

In other surveys, employers have lamented the fact that college graduates dont have the critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills all issues that would be addressed in a core curriculum.

Other disturbing findings: 20% of students who graduated with a bachelors degree were unable to accurately calculate the costs of ordering office supplies, according to the National Survey of Americas College Students.

While schools, boards of trustees, and policymakers need to make the necessary adjustments to require a core curriculum, college students cannot wait for these changes. They must research schools as thoroughly as possible, and students must choose to take the classes they need instead of selecting lightweight courses.

Requirements For A Bachelors Degree

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences awards Bachelor of Arts , Bachelor of Science , Bachelor of Fine Arts , and Bachelor of Music degrees.

General Education Classes/core Courses

Pre-requisites are 60 credits and a declared major.

The Clas Residence Requirement

All students in any major offered by CLAS must complete the 30 semester hour CLAS residence requirement in order to earn a CLAS degree. Students must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of credit from courses administered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or otherwise designated as carrying residence credit.

Courses offered by the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, Economics, and Science Studies are offered by the Colleges of Medicine, Business, and Education. Courses offered by these departments do not generally count for the CLAS residence requirement. However, if you earn a major from one of these departments, the credit hours of the courses applied to the major will be counted toward the CLAS residence requirement. Only the undergraduate majors from the departments listed above qualify for this exception.

All honors courses and courses with CLAS General Education status are counted toward fulfilling the CLAS residence requirement.
