Michigan Comes In Out Of The Cold
There was a World Series before the NCAA got involved. Carol Hutchins appreciates that more than most, as she won a title as a player when the event was sanctioned by the AIAW.
Even so, the Michigan coach was almost giddy when she walked into Hall of Fame Stadium for the first time as a participant in 1995, mesmerized by the scale of the venue that replaced the parks and intramural fields that sometimes settled championships in her playing days.
“Way back when, I remember being awestruck,” Hutchins said. “So if I was awestruck, I’m certain my team was.”
Indeed, despite emerging as the best cold weather program in the country under Hutchins, Michigan was 2-14 in the World Series entering the 2005 season. After a particularly painful exit in 2004, including a 13-inning loss, Hutchins groused that she wasn’t sure she wanted to come back. She was certain that a new postseason format introduced in 2005, adding a super-regional round and expanding the championship series to a best-of-three, would bring that much more misery for everyone looking up at the ruling dynasties.
“Any team can beat anybody on a given day, but now I’m thinking the team that gets to play the powerhouse is going to have to beat them two out of three,” Hutchins said. “I was opposed to it — not literally, but I thought, ‘This is going to make it harder than ever to knock off the Arizona and UCLA types.'”

College World Series Format
The College World Series refers to an eight-team tournament played at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, each year to crown a champion in college baseball. The tournament is double-elimination, single-game series until the final, which is a best-of-three series.
Prior to the College World Series is the Division-I Baseball Tournament. The first round of the tournament is the NCAA Regionals, a group-stage made up of 16 four-team pods. They play a round-robin double-elimination tournament where the top team from each group advances to the next round. The second round, the Super Regionals, is a best-of-three series where the winner advances to the final eight in Omaha.
The top 16 teams in the Division-I Baseball Tournament receive seeds. The rest of the field is unranked officially, and teams carry that ranking throughout the remainder of the postseason. While the seeding is ordered based on the best teams to least, the top 16 seeds arent always those who make the final eight. For example in 2021, unranked NC State upset top-ranked Arkansas in the Super Regionals to advance to the CWS. Similarly, unranked Virginia knocked off #11 Old Dominion in the Regionals and unranked Dallas Baptist dethroned #6 TCU. Virginia advanced to the CWS.

Jennie Finch’s Perfect Response
If Oklahoma gave the rest of college softball hope in 2000, Finch did all she could to extinguish it a year later while setting herself on a course to inspire a generation.
Finch wasn’t yet a household name in 2001 — unless it was a softball household. The mainstream stardom that awaited her with Olympic medals and an expanding endorsement portfolio was still in the future. In 2001, Finch was putting together one of the most impressive individual seasons in college softball history. She hit .313 with 11 home runs and 57 RBIs as a fixture in the middle of the batting order, but offense wasn’t the headline.
She finished that season with a 32-0 record and 0.54 ERA as a pitcher, still the most wins in a season by an undefeated pitcher in Division I history.
For someone such as UCLA All-American Natasha Watley, Finch’s aura at the time was the same as it was throughout youth softball careers that often intersected: less that of a rock star and more simply someone who was a pain to hit against.
“The respect was there because she was a competitor,” Watley said. “She was good, and that was it. The aura around her was you had to bring your A-game if you were going to face Jennie. It had nothing to do with everything that came after — and what a great ambassador she’s become for our game. But that wasn’t the aura then.
“It was that you’re facing a great pitcher, and you better not take the day off.”
That was the launchpad for the biggest star the sport has ever known.

How Has The Ncaa Division I Baseball Tournament Changed Since Its Inception
The tournament has grown a lot since 1947. There are currently 64 teams that compete in four rounds for the title.
Here are the major changes to the tournament, as they happened:
- 1948: First-round playoffs were changed to double-elimination.
- 1949: The final was expanded to a four-team, double-elimination format, and the site changed to Wichita, Kansas.
- 1950: Site moves to Omaha, Nebraska.
- 1954: Field expands to 23 teams. The field size bounces around between 21 and 32 for the next two decades. In the 22 years between 1954 and 1975, the field is never the same size two years in a row.
- 1976: Field expands to 34 teams, where it will stay until 1982.
- 1982: Field expands to 36 teams. It will expand multiple times in the next few years, before settling at 48 teams in 1987, where it will stay until 1999.
- 1988-1998: The eight regional champions are seeded into two four-team brackets. Those two brackets play double-elimination with the bracket winners then meeting in a one-game championship.
- 1999: Field expands to the current size of 64 teams, super regionals are added.
- 2003: CWS finals become a best-of-three series.

Will Bednar: ‘it’s The Coolest Thing Ever’
After pitching six no-hit innings in Mississippi State’s 9-0 win over Vanderbilt to clinch the College World Series title, Will Bednar is all smiles.
A couple dozen maroon-clad fans charged the field, and the players ran in a circle around the stadium, high-fiving their supporters. The Bulldogs knew what the championship meant to so many people. In Drew, Mississippi, it was a reprieve for farmers, including Stafford Shurden, who were replanting their crops this week after a devastating flood.
Though he lives closer to Oxford, he identifies more as fan of Mississippi State than Ole Miss. And after MSU made it to the CWS championship game in 2013, only to lose to UCLA, Shurden promised himself he’d make it Omaha someday to see them play. Mother Nature had other plans, he said. Shurden hoped to hop off his tractor by early evening to watch the game.
“We’re underdogs in every way,” he said. “Look at our team. They’re just a bunch of rag tags, and you’ve gotta love that about them. They’re just out there having fun.”
The Bulldogs were playing for all the people who couldn’t be in Omaha. Lemonis lost his mom last fall, and his father couldn’t travel because he’s sick and in the hospital. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, as the crowd roared and decades of futility were melting away, Lemonis finally took everything in.
They were playing for a fan base that waited a lifetime to celebrate.
Keira Goerl Restores Ucla’s Empire
Cal gained a measure of revenge by beating Finch in the 2002 national championship game, keeping the balance of power squarely on the West Coast but nonetheless extending the march toward parity by becoming the first Pac-10 team other than Arizona or UCLA to win.
That left UCLA’s seniors in a distinctly uncomfortable position as the 2003 season began.
Through more than two decades of the World Series, no senior class had left UCLA without a championship. That streak ultimately survived for another year — but only after one of the wildest World Series weeks ever, an odyssey through the losers bracket and to the brink of elimination. It was a run that demonstrated how hard it might be for UCLA to still be UCLA.
It was also a run that required the first no-hitter in championship game history to complete.
“I would have hated to end my career with only one class not getting a championship ring — and it was the class that had the best people,” said then-UCLA coach Sue Enquist. “It would have been a terrible irony. I’m just so proud that they managed that pressure. It was a story unto itself. I don’t think anybody will ever know what they took on during that time.”
“It wasn’t a sense of entitlement of feeling like we should win just because.”
UCLA advanced. Goerl didn’t allow an earned run while pitching every inning of both games.

How Are Teams Selected For The Ncaa Division I Baseball Tournament
Since 1954, the NCAA Division I baseball tournament field has been split into two qualifying groups: The automatic berths, and the at-large selections. Since 2014, that split sees 31 conference champions receive automatic berths, and 33 teams receive at-large bids, decided by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.
As part of that selection process, 16 teams receive national seeds, and are offered the option of hosting a super regional if they advance to the second round.
College Baseball Rankings: Texas A& m And Wofford Join This Week’s Top 25
The D1Baseball Top 25 Rankings had some serious upheaval last week with 15 ranked teams losing weekend series. But the opposite was true this past weekend, as only four teams from last weeks Top 25 lost their respective series, one of those being Oklahoma State, who dropped a series to also ranked TCU.
The one constant? Tennessee. The Volunteers are the top team in the land yet again this week after hitting the road and doing a clean sweep of Florida. The Vols are off to the best start in SEC history.

As for the rest of the Top 10, there wasnt a ton of movement in this weeks rankings. Miami moved from No. 5 to No. 3 following a home series win over Pittsburgh, Arkansas dropped a spot to five and Stanford is up a spot from No. 7 to No. 6. Oklahoma State dropped three spots to No. 8 following the series loss to the Horned Frogs.
There was little room for movement in the teens with almost everyone taking care of business in impressive fashion. Thats bad news for teams like Louisville, Notre Dame and TCU, who certainly had a case to surge in the latest rankings.
Oregon and Dallas Baptist exited the rankings after dropping home series to Washington State and Southern Illinois, respectively, while Texas A& M entered the rankings at No. 21 after winning a home series over Arkansas, and Wofford entered the rankings at No. 25 after taking two of three on the road from Mercer.

No. 5-ranked Oregon State is the only team from the West in the Top 25 with fellow Pac-12 side Stanford falling from No. 6 to not being ranked. The 2021 CWS included Arizona, Mississippi St., North Carolina State, Stanford, Texas, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
NCAA DI play began on February 18 and will continue until the 75th College World Series from TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska from Thursday, June 16, to Monday, June 27 . The Regionals will be from June 3-9 with the Super Regionals from June 10-12.

When Did The College World Series Start
The first-ever NCAA Division I baseball tournament was in 1947, and would barely be recognized as the same tournament nowadays. The 1947 tournament featured just eight teams, which were divided into two four-team, single-elimination brackets. The two winners California and Yale then met in a best-of-three final in Kalamazoo, Michigan. California would go undefeated through the inaugural CWS and beat Yale to capture the first title.
