How Do You Apply For Grants
Now that you have a better idea of why grants are awesome and how much money you can actually get, the next step would be to submit those grant applications. So where do you start?
Again, the process for applying for college grants depends on where the money comes from. Here, Ill break down application processes for the major sources of grant funding.
Check Out Private Student Loans
If you have no other option but to finance your education through borrowing money, this should be the first type of loan you look into. Although some private lenders only allow you to take out student loans for degree programs, some, like Sallie Mae, allow you to take out loans for programs offered by non-degree granting institutions.
Unlike other types of loans, which require you to start making payments right away, most private loans will allow you to defer payments while in school, or make interest-only payments, in addition to offering a 6-month grace period after you graduate.
However, these loans are subject to creditworthiness, so youll need excellent credit and a stable source of income to qualify for the best rates, or an eligible co-signer that meets these criteria.
Do Universities Make A Lot Of Money
Some of them can depending on what they charge for tuition, how much they receive from federal or non-federal funding, and how profitable their athletic program proves to be. Generally, the larger and more well known a school isor the more exclusive it isthe more money it stands to make through tuition and athletics.

Grants From Your School
The FAFSA is not the only way to get financial aid. You can also visit the College Board to fill out the CSS Profile, which goes more in-depth than the FAFSA and can help you unlock additional funds for school, including grants.
This application does cost money, though. Its $25 for your first application and $16 for each additional school, although application fee waivers are available.
Unfortunately, not all schools participate. Still, the CSS Profile can be a good way to see if a school you thought was too expensive might be able to give you more aid than others.
Applying For College Grants
To ensure you get all the financial aid youre entitled to, follow these three steps:
If you need additional financial aid to cover your education costs and have exhausted grant and scholarship awards, federal student loans can be a useful tool. They tend to have lower interest rates than private student loans, and have benefits that can make repaying your loans more manageable after graduation.

Understand Your Federal Grant Options
Colleges can choose to disburse grant funds in the form of a single lump sum payment or disbursement by sending federal financial funds to your school and crediting them to your account.
- Federal Pell Grants: Federal Pell Grants are the largest source and most common source for federal grants, and they are awarded solely on your financial need.
- Academic Competitiveness Grant: This grant is a combination of a merit and need-based grant for college freshmen and sophomores.
- Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants : FSEOGs help low-income undergraduate students who need substantial financial aid for college tuition.
- TEACH Grants Teach grants are a good option for students who agree to teach for four years at an elementary or secondary school that serves low-income families.
- Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants: These are available to students whose parent or guardian passed away as a result of military service in Afghanistan or Iraq after September 11, 2001.
- National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant: This grant is available to college juniors and seniors on the basis of need and merit.
Ask About Payment Plans And Discounts
If the certificate program youre interested in pursuing is on the pricier side, you can ask the institution if they can split the total cost into monthly or quarterly payments, to lessen the immediate financial burden.
Laborde says that this was a deciding factor when he chose Springboard as his learning platform. They try to accommodate the payments to your needs, says Laborde, who took out a loan through Climb Credit, Springboards lending partner, and is currently paying around $80 a month while he completes his 9-month certificate. Once he finishes, his monthly payment will increase to around $300 for 33 months.
Springboard also allows students to split the cost of the certificate into monthly payments, or defer the total amount until after they complete the program and find a job, with a $700 deposit.
Some learning platforms also offer discounts to college students, veterans or members of the military, and minorities, in addition to discounted rates for paying the full tuition costs upfront. Some of them also have money back guarantees available. With these guarantees, if you meet program requirements and still dont find a job related to your field of study after you graduate, youll get your tuition back.

What Is The Difference Between Scholarships And Grants
The federal government gives grants like the Federal Pell Grant and the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant based on financial need. There are also grants specifically available for African-Americans, single mothers, and women. Other grants are offered through your specific state. Students can find out if they are eligible for various grants after filling out a FAFSA.
Scholarships are given mostly on a merit basis, but award money is also dispersed to students in financial need. Scholarship money goes directly to the student or school to offset tuition costs and other college expenses. There are thousands of scholarships available for everything from left-handed students to online students. Reward money is sometimes given to students who demonstrate the financial need or to minority groups.
Nonprofits, individuals, and associations also give out scholarship money throughout the year. On average students attending public, four-year colleges, at all income levels, received $9,740 for the 2011-2012 school year in grant and scholarship aid, according to the Department of Education.

How To Find College Scholarship Money
Free scholarship search sites, such as fastweb.com and bigfuture.com, also match a student’s background against a database of scholarships.
A typical high school senior could match with as many as 50 to 100 scholarships, Kantrowitz said.
“You should always apply to every scholarship you are eligible for,” he advised.
Alexis Simon, 17, is applying for 20 to 30 scholarships. “I don’t know what the money is going to look like, but I’m definitely never, ever going to give up,” said Simon, who attends a performing arts high school in New York.
While that may seem like an overwhelming task coupled with college applications and coursework, much of the same material can be used for each scholarship submission with only minor tweaks, Kantrowitz said.
Further, the more scholarships you get, the more you are likely to get going forward, Lewis added.
“As they start receiving awards, they can use that credential for additional scholarships.”

How To Get Money For College
A college education is important for many reasons. It often has a major impact on increasing your earning potential for the rest of your life. It can open your eyes to possibilities for your future that you hadnt previously considered.
Its a place where you can start developing larger personal and professional networks. It sounds great, but it also takes a years-long commitment of your time, effort, and money.
The simple truth is that sending a child to college is an enormous economic drain on most families. These days the tuition, fees, and room and board for a typical four-year degree can range anywhere from around $17,000 for an in-state, public university to around $38,000 for a private college, annually. That doesnt include other expenses, such as transportation, books, and supplies, which can add another $5,000 a year to that total.
There are, however, things you can do to help get the money to pay for your, or your childs, education. The most common mechanisms for this are savings, scholarships, grants, and loans.
How Much Can I Expect From Grants For Online Students
Grants for online college or traditional college vary widely in their amounts. It may also depend on the type of aid: merit, need-based, or departmental.
Average merit-based grant awards range from $1,000 , to full rides at private schools of up to $35,000. But for the purpose of an estimate, the average merit-based award is around $5,000.
Because need-based aid depends entirely on the financial need demonstrated on your FAFSA, the average need-based scholarship amount received depends from person to person. As a rule, your need-based aid cannot exceed the amount of your financial need. That said, types of need-based aid vary in their maximum awards. For example, the Federal Pell Grant is generally $5,775, while the FSEOG is between $100-$4,000 annually.

Helping Families Find Funding
While were on the subject of funding, theres a chance youll find families who are interested in attending your school but cant afford tuition or need financial assistance to do so. There are some private foundations that offer scholarships to students who would like to attend private school. Amazon has lots of books that can help parents find financial aid for their students, too. Additionally, youll find more resources on our state specific pages.
Turn To Scholarships When Grants Arent Enough
Sometimes grants just arent enough to cover the cost of your college tuition. In that case, turn to scholarships.
Like grants, scholarships are a form of gift aid that only needs to be repaid in rare scenarios, such as dropping below half-time enrollment or not meeting a certain grade point average.
Unlike grants, however, scholarships are typically
- Merit-based, meaning that you up your chances of winning one by being a top student or athlete or by taking on extracurriculars
- Found outside the government sphere, mainly from school endowments, private foundations and community-based organizations
You can also get scholarships just for being the unique individual you are. For example, there are scholarships for cancer survivors.
Ask yourself how you stand out from the pack, and seek out scholarships that fit your identity, interests and achievements.

College Grants Vs Scholarships: Whats The Difference
Both grants and scholarships are forms of gift aid. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, grants and scholarships are different from one another.
Scholarships are typically awarded based on merit or certain qualities, such as academic excellence or athletic performance. You can qualify for a scholarship based on your talent, regardless of your economic circumstances.
Unlike scholarships, grants are usually need-based and awarded based on the students economic status. If you are a low-income student with financial need, you can qualify for grants to reduce your education costs.
Some grants have requirements you must meet in order for them to remain as gift aid. If you fail to meet the requirements, some grants are converted into student loans and must be repaid, so its important to carefully review grant criteria.
Student Loans Vs Gift Aid
A recent survey found that student loans and parent loans cover approximately 20% of undergraduates education costs, whereas scholarships and grants covered approximately 25% of students costs during the 2020-2021 academic year.
With federal and private student loans, you must repay the amount borrowed in installments over a set term with interest. While federal loans always have fixed interest rates, private loans can have variable interest rates, meaning your rate can change over time. By contrast, gift aid doesnt have to be repaid if you continue to meet the programs criteria, which can help you save substantial amounts of money in the long run.
Federal Student Aid Programs
In addition to grants and scholarships provided by the State of Ohio and individual public colleges and universities in the state, students are eligible for federal grants that directly lower the tuition sticker price for students. Like grants from the State of Ohio, these generally do not need to be repaid by students. Several types of grants are offered, as are other financial aid programs including work-study and student loans. Loans differ from grants and work study programs insofar as repayment is required.
Barnes And Noble Book Scholarships
Corporate philanthropy funds campus-based book scholarships sponsored by the retail book giant. At Pace University, each Barnes and Noble award is valued at $500 per semester. Successful applicants are full-time undergraduate students with grade point averages above 2.0. Financial need, as demonstrated by FAFSA results is required for application. Each participating campus provides multiple awards annually.
