How Do You Apply To Community College

Can I Apply To Community College If I Dont Have A High School Diploma

How to Apply to WCC

If you are in the 10% of Americans who did not finish high school or pass an equivalency exam, you still have options to further your education at a community college. Ability to Benefit programs are open to competent students who do not have high school credentials. Typically, to enroll, students must demonstrate that they would benefit from a postsecondary education by passing a government-approved exam or earning six college credits.

ATB tests are offered at community colleges across the country. Contact the community college near you to find out which test it uses and how to register. These exams may be required for enrollment depending on your school, but they are always required if you hope to apply for state or institutional financial aid. ATB students who participate in an eligible career pathway are able to access federal financial aid.

In 2012, about 82,000 students enrolled in ATB programs at community colleges. If you are motivated to complete your degree, you can defy the odds.

Who Should Not Study At Community College

While studying at Community College can be a good option for many international students it is not right for everyone. If you match one or more of the criteria below you might be better of looking for other options.

  • If you have already studied at university level: if you have already studied for a couple of years at university most community colleges will not be able to offer you classes at a higher level and community college might feel like a step backwards for you.
  • If you want to top up your CV: if you only want to take a semester or two abroad to top up your CV you will be better of studying at a university and preferably taking a degree. Studying at a Community College will give you valuable study abroad experience but the status is lower than a university, not least in the eyes of American employers.
  • Top students: if you are an ambitious student with very high grades a Community College might not be the right option for you and you might be better off applying for a high ranking university and trying to get a scholarship.

Set Up A Payment Plan

It takes time for a financial aid award to apply to your student account. If you have not received an award letter and you have not processed an acceptance of your financial aid for the current term, you should setup a payment plan. Signing up for a payment plan early allows for the lowest down payment options and guarantees your spot in class.

Take Placement Tests In Math And English

One unique requirement of community colleges is their placement tests. After the college processes your application, you’ll be invited to take placement tests to determine your level for math and English classes.

While you don’t have to take the SAT or ACT to enroll, you may find yourself exempt from these placement tests if you have a minimum SAT or ACT score. These vary from school to school, but tend to be around a 450 on SAT Reading or a 47 on ACT English and Reading combined. For math, schools usually want to see around a 450 on SAT math or a 22 on ACT math.

Placement tests don’t affect whether or not you get into community college. Instead, they help to determine what courses you should take in your first semester. It still may be useful to review math and English material before taking them to make sure you don’t end up in a class repeating much of what you already learned in high school.

What You Need To Know About Applying To Community College

For many years, applying to a community college was considered the “back-up” option for most students and families. Many felt that attending a community college was only necessary in the event that the student did not get admitted to any of the four-year colleges and universities to which he or she applied. In recent years, this perception has changed, and applications to community colleges have increased. Applying to, and eventually attending, a community college prior to moving on to a four-year college or university has proven to be a much more savvy financial option for many students and families, especially in Massachusetts. With programs such as the Commonwealth Commitment, students are not only able to save a significant amount of money, but are also guaranteed admission into the four-year state college or university of their choice if they maintain the requirements of the program. While we realize that not every community college student plans to move on to a four-year Massachusetts higher education institution, there are still so many benefits of attending a Massachusetts community college. The first step in taking advantage of the community college experience is to submit the application for admission. There are some key points to keep in mind with regards to submission:

How To Choose A College

Studying at a Community College can be a great experience but all colleges are not suitable for international students. So do some research and look for the following criteria:

  • How many students does the college have? To enjoy college life and be able to choose the subjects you like you should make sure that the college you are applying for isnt too small.
  • Do they have international students? Colleges with many international students will most likely have a better support system in place for international students and you can get to know more students in the same situation.
  • Do they have agreements with good universities? If you consider taking a Bachelors Degree in the US you should apply for a Community College that has transfer agreements with good universities. Then you can transfer to the university and count all your credits from the Community College. Good transfer agreements are usually a sign of a good college.
  • Does the school have a good location? Life outside of the classroom is a big part of studying abroad so make sure that you choose a school with an attractive location. However always form your own opinion. What is attractive to others might not be attractive to you. Some people like warm weather and beaches, others like big cities or smaller places close to nature.

You should also look at reviews, student housing, tuition fees, the subjects that the college offers etc. For more information see our article on how to choose a school abroad.

If youre a non-EU and non-EEA citizen, you need a student visa to study in the UK. The student visa in UK is labelled as TIER 4 . The day you are given a place at the university you must reach the British embassy to seek guidance on student visa requirements in UK.

Attached with the admission letter your university will send you a reference number known as Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies . Youre going to need this number at the British embassy to prove that you have been awarded a place at a UK college and therefore are eligible for a student visa.

Due to the risk of student visa processing delays, it is very important for you to know what are the requirements for the student visa in UK before you receive the admission letter.

To Minimize The Financial Burden

I’ve mentioned a few times that community colleges tend to be less expensive than 4-year colleges. Exactly how much less expensive are they?

According to the National Center for Education, the average community college cost for a year was $9,574 in 2013. While this is a significant sum, it’s less than half of the average for 4-year schools of $23,872.

In addition to saving money on tuition, community college students are eligible for financial aid, including federal grants, federal loans, state aid, and institutional aid. Plus they may be able to choose evening, weekend, or online classes that allow for a part-time or full-time job.

Students considered “in-state residents” get in-state tuition, which is why most community college students choose schools close to home . If they transfer to a state school through an articulation agreement, then they further save money with in-state tuition. Ultimately, their diploma comes from the institution from which they graduated, same as any student who attended for four straight years.

Now that we’ve gone over the main reasons that students attend community college, let’s go over how you can apply!

Do as the Atlantic puffins do. Take things one step at a time.

When Do You Apply For Early Admissions

Early admissions includes two options: early decision and early action. While early decision and early action differ in terms of their requirements and conditions, they share similar timelines. Both plans have a deadline in November and allow you to hear back about your admissions decision in mid-December.

Some popular schools with early action deadlines of November 1 are CalTech, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Notre Dame, Stanford, University of Virginia, and Yale. Popular early decision schools with a November 1 deadline include Boston University, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Northwestern, NYU, University of Pennsylvania, and Vanderbilt.

Some schools with early decision now also offer an Early Decision II deadline, which is in . Like Early Decision I, this binding option lets you hear back early from your first choice school, usually in February, about whether or not you got in. The main advantage of applying Early Decision II is that youll have a little extra time to polish up your application before submitting it. Some popular schools with Early Decision II deadlines of January 1 are Brandeis, Colby, Emory, NYU, Smith, and Vanderbilt.

Early admissions can be a great option for students who are prepared to apply early and appreciate early notification. If you’re planning to apply early, when do you complete each step of the process?

How To Transfer From Community College To A University

Attending community college can help students get basic college classes out of the way and save themselves much money. Once you complete your associates degree, you may be ready to move on to university in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. The process of transferring from community college to university can vary from school to school, however the following tips can help make that transfer happen.

What About Placement Tests And Class Registration

Most community colleges require incoming students to take placement tests before registering for classes youll want to check with an admissions officer to see if youre required to take any. Community colleges require these tests because students not only come from all walks of life, but they also have a wide range of skill sets. An adult student who wants to try out a new career has very different abilities than a student who is coming straight from high school.

Placement tests are typically in math, reading, and writing, but you may also be required to test in a foreign language or the sciences. Based on how you score, you may be recommended to enroll in introductory courses, take remedial classes, or skip ahead to advanced courses in certain subjects. Remedial classes are intended to bring you up to speed in the subject matter so that you will be successful in advanced courses later on.

Once youve received the results of your placement tests and been given recommendations on which classes to take, you can register for your first semester. If youve been assigned an advisor, talk to him or her about what is recommended for your chosen program and what you hope to get out of your education. If you havent been assigned an advisor, ask for one! He or she will be your best source for information on registration, transferring, and your curriculum.

Can I Apply To Community College If I Am An Undocumented Immigrant

An unauthorized immigration status might prevent you from attending community college in some states. If you are a U.S. citizen, legal resident, or international student with a valid F, J, M, or Q visa, you have nothing to worry about you can apply to a community college without issue.

If you are a student who does not have authorized immigration documents , your eligibility to attend public colleges and universities, including community colleges, will depend on your state. If you live in Alabama or South Carolina, you are barred from applying to public, in-state colleges. That being said, you can always consider applying to an out-of-state community college that accepts applications from undocumented students. Many states, including California, Texas, and Utah, welcome applications from undocumented students and may also allow them to access state financial aid if they finished high school in that state. Research your states laws if you need more information.
