Consider Student Loans Cautiously
While student loans can sound very attractive and can help you get through school, make sure that you know exactly what youre doing before you enter any potential debt or situation that you arent able to manage.
Student loans may sound like the best and only option for going to school in a difficult financial situation, but know that there are many other options out there.
Unlike scholarships, loans must be paid back, and often come with interest rates that increase more and more as time passes. Be sure to do your homework and look into all the ways to go to school for free before taking out a loan, including looking into schools that pay you to attend, scholarships and tuition-free colleges and universities.
Have Your Employer Pay
Sometimes, employers will assist their employees in paying for college. They do this to increase the skill level and productivity of employees encouraging longevity and reducing turnover, and sometimes, lowering their tax bill. Per the US IRS, an employee can receive up to $5,250 from their employer toward college before having to report it for taxes. Most of the time, the employee will have to sign a contract with stipulations for the money. Before signing, be sure you have read and understood the contract fully, so there are no surprises later. Some companies that offer tuition assistance programs include:
Plenty of other companies offer programs as well. Check to see if your company has one!
How Much Will College Cost Your Family
How much college costs depend on a lot of factors, including financial aid, tuition assistance, and scholarships. Remember, many schools with generous financial aid are also very selective, so its important to have a balanced college list to make sure you get into at least one fitting your budget. Before you spend the money to apply to a school, even if it sounds like a wonderful place, you need to make sure it is affordable. You dont want to get into a school only to realize you cant pay for it! Now that you know how to go to college for free, make the strategies above work for you!
The amount of aid you will receive depends on the specific formulas used by a colleges financial aid office, and your general profile. You must reapply for financial aid every academic year, which accounts for variances in the amount of aid you receive in a given year. It can go up or down, but as long as your familys financial situation stays stable your aid should too.

Scenario : You Took The Sat Or Sat Subject Tests With A Fee Waiver
Maybe you need to send proof of your Common App fee waiver eligibility to a college. Or maybe you’re applying to a college that doesn’t use the Common App or Coalition App. For whatever reason, you need a separate college fee waiver form.
If you took the SAT or one or more SAT Subject Tests with a fee waiver, you’ll automatically get unlimited college fee waivers from the College Board . These college app fee waivers will be available in your College Board account, where you can view them andshould your college request itprint out and send them to your schools.
If you took the SAT as a senior, you’ll be able to access these waivers when your scores become available. If you took the SAT as a junior, however, you’ll have to wait until the fall of your senior year.
You can also search for schools that accept application fee waivers or to see whether your schools of interest allow you to use a waiver.
You also might need to use alternative forms if you didn’t take the SAT and therefore didn’t get any College Board waivers. Let’s take a look at what these alternative fee waiver forms are.
NOTE: All SAT Subject Tests have been discontinued, with the final administration of subject tests being offered in June 2021 for international students only. However, if you took any SAT Subject Test with a fee waiver prior to the discontinuation of the exams, you will still be eligible for unlimited college fee waivers.

Consider Loan Forgiveness Programs
Before you get excited, these programs often have strict requirements, and if they are not followed, you forfeit the forgiveness. Dont bank on these if you are unsure of what you want to do and if youll be able to fulfill the obligations. Many of these programs serve students entering in-demand fields and serving certain communities. Here are some examples:
- Public Service Loan Forgiveness: PSLF will forgive the remaining balance on your Direct Loans once youve paid 120 payments under a qualified repayment plan while working for a qualified employer.
- Teacher Loan Forgiveness: This program will forgive up to $17,500 on your Direct Loan of FFEL Program loans so long as you teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency.
- Perkins Loan Cancellation and Discharge: Based on your employment or volunteer service or certain conditions, you may be able to have all or a portion of your Perkins Loan canceled or discharged.
Look Into Grants And Scholarships
Getting paid to go to school is only one of many options out there for those looking to go to college for free. There are also numerous grants and scholarships available for students in need. You are best off searching and applying for as many as you can. They generally dont cost anything to apply, and the more times you try, the better your chances are!
Its important to note that once you are already enrolled in a college program its generally easier to apply for grants and scholarships. Many businesses and philanthropists have made donations to colleges in order to offer more scholarships for minorities, low-income workers and single parents. A scholarship is an incredible gift that allows deserving students to go to college for free.

The Free College Movement
Other than the 13 free colleges mentioned earlier, you could have other options for going to college free of charge. A few states have already passed laws to make at least the first two years of college free for all students. The National Conference of State Legislatures provides an overview of their programs:
Ten other states Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma, and Washington are now considering bills to cover two-year college costs for qualifying students. And in January 2016, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made headlines by proposing a plan to fund all four years at public colleges in the state for students below a certain income level.
Cities and universities are also taking up the free-college banner. In California, several community colleges now offer free tuition programs. Some of these programs are funded by taxpayers, others by grants from businesses. However, these programs cover only one to two semesters of tuition, not the full two years.
Attend A Work College
A work college is another way to get a free college education or, at the very least, substantially discounted tuition. Just as the name suggests, these colleges, which are generally four-year liberal arts institutions, provide educational opportunities as well as valuable work experience.
But be aware, all students must participate in a comprehensive work-learning service for all four years of enrollment. In other words, all resident students have jobs. Often the jobs are on campus, but sometimes the employment may be off campus. Specific program details vary by college.
All participating work colleges are approved and supervised by the U.S. Department of Education and are required to meet specific federal standards.

City College Of San Francisco
City College of San Francisco was founded in 1935 to fight Depression-era unemployment and juvenile delinquency in turn, CCSF proved to make a massive impact on the city of San Francisco, becoming a crucial part of technical and career education in the Bay Area. Its original nickname, Trolly-Car College, reflected its scattered campuses, but by providing opportunity to people across the growing city of San Francisco, City College established a life-changing, urban presence. With some of the nations most beautiful public artworks , CCSF is the heart of San Francisco practical education for the people.
City College of San Francisco continues to ensure educational opportunity and access for all of San Franciscos people. With San Franciscos prominence in the modern tech economy, the city is rapidly becoming unaffordable for ordinary people, so to combat gentrification and increase access, CCSF made the bold step in 2017 to offer free tuition to any California resident living in San Francisco. In less than a year, enrollment increased dramatically , and the initiative is proving to be one of the most important experiments in American higher culture. City College of San Francisco means to show that when the people are given the opportunity, they will do great things.
Us Coast Guard Academy
The New London, Connecticut-based CGA trains students for service in the Coast Guard. This branch of the military is the oldest life-saving force in the world, but maritime safety is only part of its job. It also helps manage sea traffic and commerce, protect natural resources, and defend the countrys shores.
The 900 or so cadets at CGA all receive free tuition, room, and board. In exchange, they must serve at least five years after graduation, usually on board a ship. Students prepare for this by spending the summer after their third year working aboard a Coast Guard cutter ship.
Admission is limited, with only 18% of students who apply being accepted. However, unlike the other service academies, CGA does not require a congressional nomination to apply. Roughly 84% of all students will eventually go on to graduate.
U.S. News rates CGA at #2 out of 62 regional colleges in the North. The student-faculty ratio is 8:1, and more than three out of four classes have 20 students or fewer. CGA offers majors in engineering, humanities, management, mathematics and science. It also offers several unique courses through its Strategic Intelligence Studies department, such as Intelligence and National Security Policy.

Scenario : You’re Using The Common Application
The Common App streamlines the application process in a number of ways, one of which is asking for fee waivers. You can request fee waivers from any of your Common App schools!
To obtain a Common App fee waiver, you have to meet the same requirements as those described above. In your Profile section, you’ll indicate whether or not you qualify for a fee waiver, and then you’ll select your reason why. The screen will look like this:
If you select yes, you’ll be prompted to select an indicator of economic need:
You’ll electronically sign this section and receive the above reminder that your counselor will need to confirm your answer. If you already got an SAT or ACT fee waiver, then your counselor should be able to sign off on this automatically. If not, you might have to provide proof to your counselor that you qualify.
International students follow the same steps listed above. Be aware, however, that it’s ultimately up to the school to decide whether they will accept your request for a waiver.
As previously mentioned, many schools use the honor system. As long as your counselor approves, you should be all set. If, for some reason, your school wants to see proof or has decided to deny your fee waiver request , they will contact you. If you don’t hear from them, then everything should be good to go.

What If I Have To Take Out Loans
If youve done everything you can to go to college for free and you still have to pay for some of it, there are student loans to cover the financial gaps.
Whether you borrow federal or private student loans, take out only what you need. A student loan is money that you must repay with interest. The more you borrow now, the more youll end up paying back after you graduate or drop below half-time enrollment.
Federal student loans are available when you complete your FAFSA and offer flexible repayment terms, like income-driven repayment plans, forgiveness options and deferment and forbearance. If youre still struggling to pay for college even after youve reached your federal loan limit, you might need private student loans, which have low interest rates but fewer protections.
If this is the case, its important to shop around with a few lenders before applying for your student loan to keep your costs as low as possible.
Student Welfare Is Important
All students at UiB have to pay a small fee each semester. At the moment it costs around 60 EURO per semester to register as a student at UiB. If you are an exchange student you are exempt from this fee, but you still get the same advantages.
The student welfare organisation uses the semester registration fees to provide student welfare measures such as affordable accommodation, health care, sports activities, climbing clubs and a wide range of social events for students.
«I feel looked after as a student, both academically and in my free time. At UiB there are also great modern buildings and designated study halls for students.»

How To Use Common App Fee Waivers
If you’re applying through the Common App, all you have to do is indicate that you’ll be using a fee waiver on your profile page, as pictured above, and give your reason. Your counselor will then be prompted to approve your request.
Both domestic and international students may apply for fee waivers this way.
If you already got an SAT or ACT fee waiver, you shouldn’t have to do anything else since your counselor will have already double-checked your eligibility. If you didn’t, then you might need to provide them with some supporting documentation, such as proof of income eligibility.
All Common App schools should accept fee waiver requests. For instance, here’s what Cornell says:
“The Common Application will automatically send your fee waiver request to your high school counselor for confirmation. No additional documentation is needed after your counselor has approved your request.”
Many colleges share this stance, though they reserve the right to ask for more info if they deem it necessary .
If your college asks for more information, then you might have to fax or send your fee waiver form or whatever else they ask for.

Us Merchant Marine Academy
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, gives its graduates a wider range of career choices than the other military academies. All students must perform some sort of service after graduation, but they have a choice about what kind. They can either spend five years on active duty in any branch of the armed forces, or they can spend five years working in the maritime industry and eight years in the reserves.
Students at the Merchant Marine Academy, known as midshipmen, do not pay for tuition. However, they do have to pay fees of about $2,200 a year to cover expenses such as a laptop for their classes. They can apply for need-based financial aid to help cover these costs.
The Merchant Marine Academy is known as the most academically rigorous of all the service academies, requiring the most hours of coursework for a degree. It accepts 15% of all applicants, and 64% of them go on to graduate. There are about 900 midshipmen enrolled at the academy, and 70 professors. U.S. News ranks it as #3 among regional colleges in the North.
In addition to their coursework, all midshipmen at the academy must complete a Sea Year. They spend this year working on a commercial ship and traveling to ports around the world. At the end of their four years, they earn not only a B.S. degree but also a U.S. Coast Guard license and an officers commission in the Armed Forces.
