Free Tuition To Arizona St University

Starbucks paying for college? Really.

Via the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, both part-time and full-time employees are eligible for FREE tuition to Arizona State University via their 4-year online bachelor degree program.

Starbucks will actually reimburse any tuition costs not covered by need-based financial aid directly in your paycheck near the end of the semester.

Pretty awesome.

The only thing the program doesnt cover are the cost of books or any special course fees.

Its important to note that if you work at a licensed Starbucks, like in a grocery store, youre NOT eligible. You must work at a standalone Starbucks location.

Employer And Employee Financial Contributions

Employers typically cap their contributions at $5,250 per year per employee, since that amount, if applied to qualified expenses, is eligible for tax-exempt status, applied to both the payment made by the corporation and the reimbursement received by the employee. There are numerous variations of tuition payment models, including tuition reimbursements and last dollar funding. Tuition reimbursement models, such as those used by Starbucks, shift up-front costs from employers to employees. For the employee, this payment model presents a high risk situation. For employees who do not qualify for any or much financial aid, their out-of-pocket costs will be substantial, and some students may take out student loans to cover up-front costs. This places additional financial burden on employees.

Walmarts program is structured as a last dollar model. Modeled similarly to many college promise programs, employers pay nearly all the remaining tuition and qualifying fees after other sources of financial aidincluding grants, scholarships, and federal aidare accounted for. Walmarts financial contribution covers nearly all remaining costs with the exception of a modest $1-a-day copay, which is the employees contribution. Compared to tuition reimbursements, this financial contribution model presents a higher risk for employers as it requires an up-front investment in their employees tuition and fees regardless of if they pass their courses or not.

The Program Is A Broader Re

Starbucks launched a college reimbursement program in June 2014 and quickly found out that they needed to make changes. Originally, the plan would give partial reimbursement to U.S. Starbucks employees in their freshmen and sophomore years of online college, and then reimburse the full tuition in their junior and senior years. Reimbursement was scheduled to happen every six months.

The problem was there were a lot of Starbuck employees who had no or very few college credits, and therefore there was a great demand to extend the program so tuition would be fully reimbursed for employees in their freshmen and sophomore years as well. Additionally, six months was a long time for employees to wait for their reimbursement. So, in April of 2015, Starbucks decided to update the program after just a few months and reimburse full tuition, regardless of year, and offer faster tuition reimbursement now at the end of each semester.

We listened to our talent base and realized the original program wasnt broad enough, Phillips said. So we decided to expand it.

Starbucks employees celebrate graduation.

Angela Humberstones college experience afforded no idyllic afternoons studying on a campus quad.

In between daily work shifts at a hotel in the morning and at a Starbucks in the afternoon, she squeezed in a few hours of homework, sometimes also allowing herself a brief nap in her car.

The arrangement was possible logistically because Humberstone took her courses in business and environmental sustainability entirely online. And it was feasible financially because Starbucks and Arizona State University covered most of her tuition bill.

Getting a bachelors, for me, was something I didnt think I was ever going to do. It was out of my reach, monetarily wise, says Humberstone, who lives in San Diego. I really didnt want to get a loan and be in debt thousands of dollars when I came out of school and not know what I was going to do. I was turned off of traditional college in that sense.

Yet in May, Humberstone crossed the commencement stage at ASU, becoming one of nearly 3,000 Starbucks employees who have earned bachelors degrees online through the company-university partnership program.

It was amazing, Humberstone says of the ceremony. It really kind of seals it in for you that you accomplished that major step.

I would recommend this be done as much as possible, in as many mechanisms as possible, she says.

Over the past few years, three major employers, Starbucks, Walmart, and Amazon, have announced education assistance programs, each of which provides a unique example of how employer aid can attempt to make postsecondary education more affordable for working adults. Given that Black and Hispanic populations disproportionately occupy food service and warehouse jobs, these companies have presented their education assistance programs as a corporate solution to increasing educational attainment among Black, Hispanic, and low-income populationspopulations that are heavily represented among Starbuckss, Walmarts, and Amazons entry-level workers, but that have lagged in degree attainment.1 However, at best, these programs are limited in their ability to meaningfully increase college access and completion, and, at worst, they can create additional barriers for employees seeking to obtain high-quality, meaningful credentials.

Close examination of the programs design elementsfocusing on employer and employee financial contributions, employer limits on programs of study, and employer limits on institutionsreveals that, despite what may be advertised, corporate education assistance programs do not meaningfully relieve financial constraints facing employees interested in pursuing a college degree. These programs in fact limit the college and career choices for some of their employees.

Phillips didnt reveal Starbucks retention rate, but said it was markedly higher than the retail average and that it went up after this announcement . Additionally, more people than ever before applied for jobs at Starbucks this year.

Whats interesting though is that Phillips said applications went up not just for barista positions after the program was announced, but for corporate positions as well. Generally, many of the applicants for those corporate positions already have a college degree, and therefore wouldnt qualify for the program, and yet the program enticed them anyway.

This is what people want to be part of, Phillips said. They want to be part of a company that does it the right way.

Want To Get A College Degree For Free Try Getting A Job At Starbucks

Starbucks said Monday it will offer employees full tuition at Arizona State Universityâs online program, giving them the chance to earn a bachelorâs degree for free.

The coffee chain already offers its baristas two years of undergraduate tuition at ASU under its existing college achievement program. Now the company is extending that to four years for most of its workers.

Here are more details:

Who can apply: All full and part-time U.S. employees who do not already have a four-year degree. Starbucks says 70% of its workers do not have a bachelorâs degree.

Whoâs not eligible: Workers at Starbucksââlicensed stores,â such as those located inside grocery stores.

Can you leave Starbucks after graduating: Yes. Employees will have no obligation to remain at Starbucks after they graduate.

How does it work: Starbucks employees who qualify will receive a scholarship from ASU that covers 42% of the cost for each credit of course work. Starbucks will pay the remaining 58%, minus any other scholarships the employee receives.

How often will Starbucks reimburse you: Starbucks will reimburse tuition costs at the end of each semester, as opposed to the end of each year as it currently does. So, employees who drop out or leave the company will be responsible for paying tuition for that semester.

More than 140,000 out of a total of 191,000 employees are eligible for the program.

Overcoming The Online Stigma

One of the programs most important findings is that many workers are initially skeptical of taking courses online, says Mary Dixon, who directs the partnership for Starbucks. This is the case even though the online instruction model offers the flexibility many working adults need to accommodate their busy schedules.

The Starbucks program tries to address this apprehension by offering new students an orientation course that teaches them how to make the most of online learning systems.

At first I thought I wasnt going to be very good at online classes, Humberstone says. But once I realized that this is a great opportunity, I figured if I put my focus in and really make sure Im on top of everything, I should be successful.

Word-of-mouth recommendations among baristas have contributed to the programs success, Dixon says.

For example, Ferguson has been so impressed by the program that hes encouraged friends and family members to apply for Starbucks jobs and enroll at ASU. His father, who started college years ago but didnt graduate, took his advice, hoping to qualify for more senior job opportunities. Now, Ferguson says, theyre taking the same ASU history class.

Hes been out of school for so long, but hes really smart. Were on week five of the work but hes already on week seven. Hes moving, hes killing it, Ferguson says. We have the same graduation date that would be pretty cool, too.
