    Courses In An Aviation Degree

Aviation programs cover many diverse topics, including technical aircraft operations, aviation law and regulatory processes, aircraft systems, and aviation management and organization processes. In most instances, course content varies according to area of study. For example, an air traffic control program and a pilot program must cover different subject matter out of necessity. However, many programs feature the same foundational body of knowledge.

Read on to review five common courses in aviation programs. While exact course titles and content may vary slightly, many aviation degrees include courses that focus on these subjects.

    Introduction to Aviation Technology

Most programs include a general introductory course that outlines the basics of aviation technology and operations. This course often provides an overview of the aviation industry and its various associated careers, giving students a broad understanding of how the field functions. Other common topics include safety practices, basic flight technology, regulations and the regulatory process, organizational practices, and the human factors that affect aviation.

Do You Need A Degree To Be A Pilot

To cut right to the chase you do not need a degree to be an airline pilot, but by the time you move on to the majors its a good idea to have one.

Most majors list 4-year degrees as preferred and some even mandate them. Even during pilot shortages, the majors are very competitive when compared to the regional airline, so its always advisable to get whatever edge you can over your competition.

    Airlines
    Preferred

This is not necessarily the case at the regionals. Pilot demand always hits the regionals before the majors so they cant afford to be as picky.

These regional airlines hire directly out of flight schools. Since the typical route for an airline pilot is to start at the regionals and work up to the majors, its common for pilots to use their time at the regional airlines to complete their 4-year degree via online resources.

Alternatively, getting your degree prior to or in conjunction with your flight training offers you the option of reducing your required hours prior to being eligible for an airline pilot position. The FAAs 1,500-hour rule can be done in just 1,250 or 1,000 hours depending on what type of degree you obtain

So the question becomes: how should you balance going to college with flight training?

There are a few different options and each one is going to work better for different individuals depending on their situation.

Most major airlines have 4-year degrees as a preferred requirement. Updated as of 6.25.2020

    Lack Of Structured Training

The last thing a new student pilot needs is to step into a flight school and not have a clear path towards their certificate. I’ve been there. At my first flight school, I found myself wondering what the next lesson would entail, even occasionally showing up having to tell my instructor what exactly I wanted to accomplish that day.

This is a poor model for someone with little aviation experience it leads to overwhelming confusion for many students. Setting expectations for each flight lesson is a good thing. If you don’t feel like there’s enough structure, talk to your instructor. And if that doesn’t work, try a different flight school. You’re the client and you should get your money’s worth.

    They All Landed Interviews

The statements above about the four-year degrees are false. We, and many other private flightschools, have trained many students that have nothing that remotely resembles a four-year degree from auniversityand who are now flying with the majors. They all landed interviews, were serious candidates andusedcritical thinking. Most any flight school will have that experience. Yet the myth of thenecessaryfour-year degree to fly for the majors perpetuates via websites and blog posts, and students areluredinto spending huge amounts of money to live an unnecessary college lifestyle to attain a goalthat theyalready know they want – but with the added cloud of a full college tuition burden and two yearsof wastedtime. The statements above about what the majors want are unwaveringly true. But every single facet ofthatparagraph can be attributed to experience attained in a private flight school and achieved bythe flightstudent– without the four-year degree.

Considering The Various Types Of Colleges Here Are Some Tips

    • Community and vocational colleges are an economical option with the least expensive cost per credit hour. Students could consider taking the first half of their credit hours at a community college to save money, then transfer to a 4-year institution. Certain states, including Delaware, Nevada and New York, offer scholarships to cover the cost of community college tuition.
    • 4-year private colleges come at a premium, but grants can be a dominant source of aid. To ensure youre not missing out on opportunities, complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid and any other forms required by your state or institution. Some grants will rely on those forms, but others have various requirements, including grade transcripts and personal statements.
    • 4-year public, in-state colleges can also offer unique options. You can look into reciprocity agreements like the Western Undergraduate Exchange or the Midwest Student Exchange Program to see if you can receive a tuition reduction.
    • If you need to take out student loans, first look at federal student loans. These loans, which are funded by the federal government, offer several repayment plans and the option of loan forgiveness if you work in public service. If that wont cover the cost of college for you, private student loans from a lender can bridge the gap. Our Student Loan Payment Calculator can help borrowers figure out how much theyll owe monthly.

Differences In Institution Types Greatly Impact Cost

Students attending area community colleges or public, in-state schools pay less than half the cost per credit hour of their out-of-state and private school counterparts.

Based on tuition and fees, the cost of a college credit hour is:

    • $155 for students at in-district community and vocational colleges
    • $435 for students at 4-year public, in-state colleges
    • $1,118 for students at 4-year public, out-of-state colleges
    • $1,537 for students at 4-year private, nonprofit colleges

    Why Is College So Expensive

S.African aviation school offers course to more black ...

As with everything else, several factors are contributing to the increased prices of colleges.

First of all, it is the increasing demand: more than 5.1 million students attended college in 2017 compared to 2000. This number continues to grow, and with higher demand, come higher prices.

Second, colleges include many branches such as administrative branches, instructional, construction, maintenance, supplies, and with prices for living, in general, going higher, so do these expenses. Additionally, the dark side of colleges is that they are increasing their administrative branches and fees Education data reports explain that just between 1975 and 2005 the number of administrators in colleges has increased by 85% and of administrative staffers by over 240%. This means that while the prices are going up, you are not necessarily paying more to get a better education and teachers, a contrary, studies have shown that in 2018 almost 73% of all faculty positions were not held by college professors but by non-tenure-track who get paid lesser and have lesser experience and education so these higher costs are going in the pockets of the administrators and administrative staffers who are rather working as college promoters and marketers. This is one of the biggest issues that college education in the states is facing, and as such, I feel we are obliged to mention it, considering that it is one of the biggest, main reasons for increased college expenses and tuition.
