Before enrolling in an associate degree, you should first examine what university degree you want to explore in the future. This is to facilitate the easy transfer of credits to the degree program you want to be part of. Otherwise, many subjects that you took in your community college may not be credited at the university level.
Not all your course credits can be transferred when you move from one school to another. Only those that are relevant to the degree you are applying for are most likely to be credited. For instance, a biology course from your previous degree in nursing can be eligible to be credited to a pharmacy bachelors program. Conversely, a biology course may not be credited if you are planning to transfer to a baccalaureate degree in Business Administration.
Some universities also base the relevance of courses on when you took them. Since there are subjects with topics that continuously change and upgrade, such as Information Technology, your credits may be unlikely to be transferred if these were taken years ago. On the other hand, subjects with content that does not change, such as Classic Theories in Early Childhood Education, may be credited regardless of the year you earned them.

There are a few steps youll need to take if you want to transfer from community college to a university, especially if youre planning on transferring credits from community college to university. Were going to go over the three step process below.
But one quick caveat before we start: the transfer process at each university is different. So while youll follow these general steps, youll need to do your research to make sure you meet the transfer requirements at your school.
Plan It Out Then Talk To An Advisor
Once you know what bachelors degree you want, what school you want to get it from, which community college is the best choice for your chosen university, and what kind of transfer agreement the two schools have, its time to put your plan together.
This is the part that, unfortunately, I cant coach you through. Every university and degree requirement is so different that youll probably be spending a significant amount of time researching, thinking, and trouble-shooting as you try to understand which community college courses are safe and which arent.
Fortunately, while I cant coach you through this step, youre not completely alone. Once youve done your absolute best to build your credit-transfer plan, you can take this plan to your chosen universitys college advisor to ensure your plan will actually work.
Note that I said your universitys advisor, not your community colleges advisor. A community college advisor cannot help you with this step. As I mentioned earlier, their job isnt to help you transfer credit between colleges, its to enroll you in an associate degree program, so asking them for credit-transfer advice will be fruitless and frustrating. Instead, talk to an advisor at the university you want to graduate from. Have them review your plan and tell you whether or not these courses will transfer.

Although there are certainly similarities between applying to college out of high school and transferring to a new university, the process is still quite complicated, and long. To help make your transition as smooth and pleasant as possible, here are our tips on how to successfully transfer from a community college to a four-year university:
Can Articulation Agreements Transfer Whole Degrees
Yes. Some articulation agreements are written to accept entire associate degrees. Others simply identify individual courses that students planning to transfer should take while they are still in community college.
As an illustration, if a student is majoring in respiratory care, they can find out which community colleges offering respiratory care preparatory health courses are included under the articulation agreement signed by regional community colleges and four-year institutions. Each community college will be listed and, if its still offering respiratory care, it will appear under the current academic year. If students arent quite yet sure what they plan to major in, they can find a list of community colleges they can apply to for admission.
Community colleges and universities structure their articulation agreements so that they align closely with each other. Most agreements are based on transferring students completing their associate degrees. This will tell you the maximum amount of credit you should be looking to earn from your community college. Taking anything beyond this maximum will be a waste of your time and money.
The next thing to consider is whether your chosen university and community college actually work well together. Because of those pesky disagreements over course-requirements, earning a 2-year associate degree does not automatically mean youre halfway done with your bachelors. This is one of the most common mistakes community college graduates make. You can only transfer a full associate degree into a bachelors degree program if that university and community college have a very good, pre-existing transfer agreement.
Thats why its important to understand what kind of transfer agreement your chosen community college has with your chosen university. ASU uses the American Council on Education’s Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services to assess how to transfer military credits to ASU. In general, a military course must be similar to an ASU undergraduate course to transfer to ASU.
Military credits that transfer to ASU through educational experiences in the armed services are not applicable toward completing ASUs general studies requirements for graduation, but do count for total credits toward completion. No transfer credit is awarded for vocational certificate category ACE recommendations.
The JST is reviewed for potential transfer credit in accordance with VA guidelines and Arizona statutes related to awarding credit for military training and education.
