Can I Transfer From Community College To University

Don't Miss

Will My Credits Transfer Out Of State How To Find Out

How I Transferred to UCLA | My Community College Story

But what if you want to transfer credits from a community college in, say, Alabama to a state or private university in North Carolina? Its unlikely that the North Carolina school will have a formal credit transfer agreement with your Alabama community college. But that does not mean you wont be able to get a full credit transfer.

Community colleges generally enjoy a good reputation, and most often have accreditation from a major regional accrediting body . The best approach is to talk to the registrar at the school you wish to transfer your credits to. Odds are they will be open to transferring core courses in your major. Elective courses are a bit less likely to transfer. But it may be possible if your elective courses directly mirror some courses in the curriculum at your new school, and appear to be a good replacement for them. A key question is how closely the courses you have already taken will relate to the major you will be pursuing at the school where youll finish your degree. The more closely they match courses in the curriculum for your full major, the better the chance theyll be accepted in transfer whether you are moving on to an in state or out of state university.

Why Does My Gpa Matter At Community College

I know that I just reiterated that your college GPA does nottransfer from different colleges and universities. However, it is important torealize that your GPA at the community college is whats going to get you intothe university that you want to go to. Even though this GPA will not transferto the university, it is the main thing that they are going to be looking atwhen wanting to accept you.

Once you are a college student the focus is not on your ACTscore or high school GPA. The university you want to transfer to will focus onwhat you did and the impact that you made at your community college. Therefore, you still have to focus on your studies during the time at the communitycollege.

Recommended First Year Courses

The Washington 45 course list was developed to provide optimum course selection guidance to high school students enrolled in the Washington Running Start program or traditional transfer students who wish to transfer prior to earning an associate degree. The Washington 45 was developed as a way to provide students with guidance that would enable them to select courses that would successfully transfer to all public and private baccalaureate institutions in Washington State. Although the plan does not guarantee more than 45 transfer credits at all Washington institutions, the UW will allow more than 45 transfer credits for courses completed from this list.

Courses Receiving No Credit

The UW reserves the right to deny credit for courses that are not compatible with those offered in its baccalaureate degree programs. • Repeated courses or courses with duplicate subject content
  • Coursework earned at an institution that did not hold at least candidacy status with its regional accrediting association when the coursework was taken
  • Courses that provide instruction in a particular religious doctrine
  • Mathematics courses considered below college level, including basic math, business math, and beginning and intermediate algebra
  • Courses offered for non-credit continuing education units

  • Courses providing instruction in English as a Second Language *
  • Examinations offered by the College-Level Examination Program
  • Remedial courses in any academic discipline *
  • Non-academic/vocational-technical courses. **Up to 15 credits may be awarded for courses numbered 100 and above if included as electives within an academic associate degree from a Washington community college. See also Restricted Credit.

How Can Students Choose A Community College Thats Right For Them

First, students have to consider what they want to do with their degree. No one expects college freshman to have their professional life mapped out the first week of classes. However, when looking at community colleges, students should determine whether the school offers courses that support their current interests. Some community colleges have great programs for nursing while others concentrate on science and engineering. There are also schools that specialize in particular industries such as winemaking or beer brewing.

Even if they changed their mind later, students can inventory their projected professional aspirations and then compare that to the degree programs and reputations of the community colleges on their shortlist. This can help students narrow down their options, which include hundreds of community colleges that offer classes online.

Some students have a pretty good idea of what they want to study at a four-year university but go to community college to build a strong foundation in core classes needed to get into their degree programs. This can result in greater confidence once they begin to apply at universities with four-year degrees. On average, four-year universities charge at least twice as much as community colleges. So, students who want to firm up their knowledge of basic courses can do so for less money at the local community college.

Tips To A Successful Transfer From A Community College

Most community college students who would like to obtain a bachelors degree never do. Only 14% of students who start at a community college end up transferring and earning a bachelors degree within six years.

My friend, who is a physician, decided that the best way to get her daughter through community college as quickly as possible and on to a bachelors degree was to help her pick her classes. I was stunned at how complicated the process is, she complained to me. Even with an advanced degree, its hard to figure out.

How to Successfully Transfer

If you are a community college student, here are 10 things that you can do to boost your chances of ultimately making a smooth transition to a four-year college.

1. Study for Placement Tests

Community colleges routinely require entering students to take placement tests in math and English. Studies show, however, that these tests are blunt instruments that unfairly consign too many students to remedial courses that do not offer credit. According to Davis Jenkins, a senior research scholar at the Community College Research Center at Columbia University, 30% of the time, test takers are underplaced in English and math courses.

2. Appeal the Placement Verdict

Tip : Know Your Deadlines

You know what professors love? Writing letters of recommendation for hard-working students whose progress theyve enjoyed observing. You know what professors hate? Writing letters of recommendation for students who forgot until Friday night at 11PM that the submission deadline was Monday at noon.

Its very important that you keep up with all your deadlines, especially those that require something from other people. That includes letters of recommendation, but it might also include getting and sending official transcripts, test scores, or financial aid information. Every semester, make a list of every important deadline that youre expecting, and put it on your calendar. Work toward your goals constantly, rather than falling behind and trying to catch up later.
