Should I Be Worried If My Kid Is Placed In A Remedial Course

Class At High School Stock Photo

Remedial courses are a good way for students to get to the level they need to be academically before taking courses that require specific background knowledge and concepts. Rock says she doesnt think parents should worry if their kids take remedial classes. However, it is important to recognize the financial implication of them. Remedial courses cost money, but your student will not earn credits for these courses. The unfortunate part is they cost money and they dont count towards your degree, Rock says. But Ive known a lot of students who had to do remedial courses that then went on to complete four-year and graduate programs.

Taking Courses That Your School Doesn’t Offer

Some students find themselves at a crossroads when they realize that one of the classes they were interested in is full at the university/college that they are attending. Taking that single class at a community college not only allows you to cross it off your checklist but doing so may also be cheaper.

Alternatively, there are cases where your university simply does not offer a class or course that you might be interested in. For example, you are enrolled in a music school but you have a vision to one day have your own business in the music industry. For this reason, you might want to take a short Management or . But what if your music-focused school does not offer such an option?

Well, you could just find a community college in your area that does! Also, in certain cases, you may find yourself at a crossroads. You might be interested in programs at two different community colleges, this is known as dual enrollment and it is absolutely possible!

However, in either case, if you are also interested in having credit hours transferred back to your primary university or college, make sure that they allow transferable credits from the community college you wish to attend.

Can I Benefit From Taking Just One Class From A Community College

As it turns out, there are many varied reasons for taking a single course and all of them eventually help build or broaden the studentâs opportunities for higher education, careers, and even life in general. For example, some students take single classes at community colleges while enrolled in university just to shorten their time to achieve a degree.

So letâs review the top seven reasons for taking only one community college class to see how you could benefit.

Is It Bad To Take Only 2 Classes For The Spring Semester Since Others Are Full

1.1 Adult Learning â Student Success

< p> I am a sophomore and this spring semester in college I’m only taking two classes — Microeconomics and Geology. I wanted to take others but I can’t. I registered late and no other classes that I need are open. Also they aren’t granting overflows to me. So is it okay if I only take 2 classes this semester or will this hurt by transcript when applying to grad school?< /p>

< p> Also I am going to make up for it by taking 2 Maymester classes and 2 Summer classes. So is it all that bad, or is it fine?< /p>

< p> Well, it depends. Don’t you have to maintain a “FULL TIME STUDENT” status, having a minimum of 12 credits? If you can’t get access to class, how about taking courses that fulfill General Education requirements?< /p>

< p> Well I’ve always had at least 12 credits a semester until now. My financial aid only requires a minimum of 6 credits so it won’t hurt me that way if I only take two classes. Why do I have to maintain a full time student status every semester? Also I’ve taken all the General Education requirements. I needed major course but they’re all full.< /p>

< p> For some colleges, dropping from a full-time to part-time student even if it is one semester can affect your financial aid and housing . But I guess you don’t have that issue since you state that you can have 6 credits for financial aid. =& lt /p>

< p> I don’t know if you contacted these people yet, but if all you contacted so far was a professor, definitely try to meet with one of the three people I mentioned above.< /p>

Course Repetition: Special Circumstances

Students may not repeat a course in which they received a passing grade of A, B, or C. However, under specific conditions, the Dean of Student Services or designee may permit the repetition of courses for which a grade of âCâ or better has been received. These conditions are:

  • When the studentâs previous grade is, at least in part, the result of extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances are verified cases of accident, illness or other circumstances beyond the control of the student
  • When a student should repeat a course because there has been a significant lapse of time since the student previously took the course
  • When it is necessary to meet a legally mandated training requirement as a condition of continued paid or volunteer employment.

California Education Code states that grades awarded for courses repeated under these specific conditions shall not be counted in calculating a studentâs grade point average.

There Are Advantages When It Comes To Registering For Classes

All college students know that registering for classes is comparable to the Hunger Games. This problem is especially real as a first-year student because freshmen usually register for classes after sophomores, juniors and seniors have already chosen their courses. However, there is often an advantage for honors students when it comes to class registration.

The entire honors program got to pick our classes a few weeks other students, says Alaina Leary, a graduate of the honors program at Westfield State. I went to a medium sized school, so this was a huge help in securing the classes I needed and wanted, especially for core classes that everyone needs to take. I had the first pick at good professors and preferable class times as well, and never once did I struggle to get into a class I wanted to take.

If you plan on applying for scholarships or to grad school like Alaina, being in the honors program can only strengthen your resume. It was a fantastic experience and I definitely think it awarded me opportunities both in undergrad and beyond, Alaina adds.

Can My Student Take Just One Or Two Courses At A Community College

Photoshop for Beginners | FREE COURSE

Taking just one or two courses at a community college is extremely common. In fact, 62% of students enrolled in community colleges attend part time, according to the 2016 American Association of Community College Fact Sheet. However, some experts, like Stephen J. Handel, executive director of higher education at The College Board, recommend students enroll full time. Handel says community colleges are great because of their flexibility, but if possible, enrolling as a full-time student is best. Students who go full-time can immerse fully in the experience, complete requirements more quickly, and potentially go on to earn a bachelors degree more quickly if thats what they want to do, Handel says.

Is Community College Worth It

Absolutely! Handel stresses that parents and students should not underestimate the rigor and value of community colleges, as they are excellent educational paths for students after high school. On average, community college students earn significantly more over their lifetime than those who earn only a high school diploma, according to a Community College Review study in 2011. Its a serious commitment, Handel says. Thats the thing I try to instill. I went to community college a million years ago. I had some extraordinary college professors and experiences. Embrace it fully!

How I Graduated College By Only Taking One Class

In December 2015, Id had enough.

Im a writer, but most months my writing doesnt pay the bills. I live in Southeast Asia and, for years, my day job has been teaching English, phonics and reading. When I first came to this part of the world, a college degree wasnt necessary to get a decent job what was important was native English-speaking ability, experience, professionalism and training.

Things changed. While many employers were willing to hire me, they couldnt, because laws had been put into place making it difficult or impossible to obtain a work permit for a prospective employee who did not have a bachelors degree.

Rather than work under the table , I decided I was going to finally somehow get my degree.

How Many Classes You Should Take As A Junior

During your junior year, your focus should start to shift to what youre doing after college. At this point youre probably thinking youll only be halfway done, how can you think about the end already?

During your junior year, should be meeting with the careers office on campus and get their help. Theyll teach you how to write and perfect a résumé, how to interview, how to network, and theyll point you to events where you can practice these skills with the very same people who might one day be your bosses.

Along with these events, junior year is also common when college students start to do internships for college credit. Sometimes these are required by a major or minor, and sometimes they are just a really good idea highly recommended by your professors. If you are spending time away from campus to work on internships, that may take up space in your schedule you would otherwise use for a class. But theyre also giving you course credit, so you could be coming out even.

According to international teacher and writer Melissa Morgenstern, junior year is the most common time for college students to study abroad. She says, Assuming you consider all of your options, you will probably have the least trouble during your junior year in terms of academic credits, program variety, and your overall choice of destinations, but perhaps a bit more to deal with personally and emotionally.

Pros And Cons Of Part

Using a Social Media Account With Your Kâ12 Class

There are some definite upsides to being a full-time student if your schedule allows it. If you are a full-time student, you are more likely to:

  • Graduate on time or even possibly ahead of schedule
  • Have fewer semesters in college
  • Have greater access to scholarships
  • Receive more Pell Grant money at one time
  • Have the option to live on campus

There are some downsides to full-time student status as well. If you are a full-time student, youll probably have:

  • Less time for work
  • Less free time, especially if you have to work as well
  • Higher tuition costs at one time
  • Heavier course loads

Just as there are pros and cons of being a full-time student, there are also pros and cons of being a part-time student. If you are a part-time student, youll probably have:

  • The ability to work full-time and still have some free time
  • A lighter course load
  • A more flexible schedule
  • Smaller tuition amounts required at one time

There are disadvantages to being a part-time student as well, though. If you are a part-time student, you:

  • May need more time to earn your degree
  • May not be eligible for scholarships
  • May receive less or no federal Pell Grant money
  • Are likely ineligible for campus residency

Weighing the pros and cons of being a full-time or part-time student can help you decide which one is right for you. Your schedule and home life will likely play significant parts in making this decision.
