What To Do If Your Child Misses Their Application Deadlines
During college application season, high school seniors juggle multiple responsibilities and activities. They may be super organized and driven, but sometimes, life just happens and deadlines can easily be missed.
A student can either miss submitting their application entirely, or simply forget to send in a component of the application like a letter of recommendation or their SAT scores. Either way, both possibilities are common, and by asking the right questions, your student can still get back on track with their college admissions journey.
Plenty of high school students miss their college application deadlines every year, so itâs important that students donât panic. Reassure your student that they still have options, regardless of their missed deadline.
Final Thoughts: Colleges With Late Application Deadlines

Even though these colleges have deadlines that are later than average, you still need to plan and prep your application months before, whether you’re asking for a letter of rec, studying for the SAT, or drafting and revising your personal essay.
Furthermore, colleges with rolling admissions might have a priority deadline as early as November. If you’re really serious about a particular school, try to apply as early as possible. An added motivation is the knowledge that, in many cases, the sooner you apply, the sooner you’ll get an admissions decision!
If any of the schools above interest you, you might be able to spread out your work and remove some of the pressure from the typical college application season in November and December. At the same time, don’t put off your applications for too longdeadlines have a habit of sneaking up on you before you know it!

Colleges With Rolling Admissions
Unlike the colleges listed above, schools with rolling admissions do not have a set application deadline. Instead, they open a window of time during which they’ll accept applications, often from the fall to the spring.
Although this policy gives you more flexibility, it’s definitely not a pass to procrastinate. Spaces at rolling admissions schools can fill up, and commonly admissions committees give the strongest consideration to students who file their applications early or submit by a priority deadline. A good rule of thumb to use when applying is, “The earlier, the better.”
So there you have itthe full list of schools with late application deadlines and a few popular ones with rolling admissions policies. Even if you missed some earlier deadlines, you still have a number of options for a fall college enrollment.
Option : Reach Out To An Admissions Counselor

What if you miss the deadline completely â without submitting your application, essays, or any other materials? In this case, contact an admissions counselor as soon as possible. However, only do so if you have a solid reason for missing the deadline.
Many schools consider exceptions to their application deadlines. For example, admissions offices may extend the deadline for a family emergency, medical emergency, or other unforeseen crisis. If you have all the materials ready but can’t afford the application fee, ask about a waiver for financial hardship.
The admissions office may request a written explanation for why you missed the deadline. Be sure to use a professional tone and lay out your case clearly and cogently. Also, make sure to express your enthusiasm for the school. This letter will be added to your admissions file if the school decides to consider your application.

How To Apply To College After A Deadline
LEYLA NORMAN
College applications have rather hard and fast application deadlines. Applications for early college admissions are usually due in November, regular applications are usually due the January before you wish to enroll, and transfer applicants must often submit their application materials before May 1. If your application was due on or near one of these common application due dates and you did not turn your application in on time, there is still a slight chance that you could turn in your application and have it accepted for consideration.
Contact the admissions office of the university whose deadline you missed. Make sure to call as soon as possible after the application deadline. You will stand a better chance of having your materials accepted if applications are currently being considered by the admissions team.
Apologize for missing the deadline, and explain your reason to the admissions office representative. For example, if you only just found out about the universitys program in the major you want to study, they may consider that a legitimate reason for your application being late.
If the university still has spaces available for new students, the admissions office may well accept your application. Be aware that universities have wait lists with students who will be considered ahead of you.
tips
- Make sure your application is absolutely perfect when you submit it.
- Submit your application as soon after the deadline as you can.

What Happens If You Apply By A Priority Deadline What Happens If You Apply After It
If you are at all able to apply by a school’s priority deadline, we highly recommend it. If you apply by the priority deadline, you’re guaranteeing your application will be reviewed, and you’re giving yourself the best shot at both getting into the school and getting financial aid. There’s really no downside to applying by a priority deadline, unless it causes you to neglect other college deadlines, schoolwork, etc. in order to meet the deadline.
If you apply after the priority deadline, you can still be accepted, but you run the risk of the school already having filled its slots for the next school year. When this happens, your application won’t be reviewed at all, even if it’s very strong. It’s uncommon for this to happen, but it’s more common for schools with priority deadlines for special programs, student housing, or financial aid to run out of spots/money for those. So you may still get accepted into the school, but you may not get as much financial aid, be able to live on campus, or be admitted into special programs the school has. So really try to make priority deadlines, even if they don’t seem that important.
If An Application Deadline Is Missed Then Take Immediate Steps To Contact The Schools Admissions Office
As for application tardiness, however, Frank stresses that it is important a student has a legitimate reason for missing a deadline. Translation: A simple I just forgot, is not going to cut it.
Kafi Martin, CEO and founder of Degrees of Success Inc., agreed with Frank and said that, while college deadlines are typically in place for a reason, if an earth shattering, unavoidable and unexpected major crisis occurs and a student misses an application deadline, there are four steps he or she must take:
1. Contact the admissions office and ask to speak with an officer. If the student has already visited the school and has the contact information of an officer, then contact him or her.
2. The student should explain why he or she missed the deadline and what steps he or she has taken to correct the error.
3. Mail or submit in person, a copy of the completed application and speak with an officer about it immediately.
4. Follow up with the officer at set dates to know whether the application is being considered or not .
The margin for mistakes on the application deadline is miniscule and subject to rare circumstances, Martin said. If the deadline was missed because of the students own negligence, theyve most likely missed that opportunity and will have to wait until next semester to apply. A time-oriented, written plan can help you avoid this costly mistake.

Ask About Application Submission Policies
The very first thing you or your child should do is contact the collegeâs admission office and explain the situation to them. Ask about the collegeâs policies for deadlines and whether or not they would accept an application past the enforced deadline. Meanwhile, the student needs to be prepared to explain why they missed their deadline, and unfortunately, a simple âI forgotâ wonât suffice.
They should be able to explain their reasons for missing the deadline either over the phone or in a handwritten letter to the admissions office. The collegeâs admissions office may ask for this in addition to their application as a stipulation for accepting it past the deadline. In their letter, the student should outline why they think they would still be a good fit for that college it would function as a cover letter of sorts and would be a nice touch to their late application.
If the college accepts your studentâs late application, they need to understand that they may not have priority for first-come, first-serve college components like financial aid, course registration, or housing options.
